Medical Layers Reviews

Medical Layers is an anomaly game in a hospital. Find the way out by going through the door with the red light if an anomaly appears and through the door with the green light if no anomaly appears. You should also be careful with the monsters that may be in these corridors, they want to get you.

If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, then The Exit 8 has sure been praised a lot over the past two years. It feels like every other (other) week we get another one of these SUPEr SpO0kY SP0t THe DiFFeREnCE games, where -other than the location- they're more or less completely identical to each other. Obviously, I must not mind it that much, since I keep buying 'em; and in THIS lovely little Steam sale, I got two new ones! Medical Layers, which takes place in a hospital; and Distorted Hallways, which takes place at a public school. Other than that, they look like the same game. coolio. I'll review the other one eventually, but let's talk Medical Layers. Are you ready for your checkup? If you've played any of these anomaly games before, then you should feel right at home here; as it just follows the playbook down to the letter. You are a lowly (insert occupation here!) trapped in an endless hallway loop at a (insert totally original location here!). Spot the anomalies! If you don't see anything wrong, go to the right! BUT if you DO see something wrong, go to the left! You have to survive (insert oddly specific number here!) floors of this madness to win! (insert exclamation!) .
(thank you for playing Exit 8 Mad Libs. hope you had fun!).
But this one is different. In fact, this place is like an onion, because this hospital has l a y e r s . . . uhm, in other words, there's slightly more you have to look around now. Unlike in Exit 8, which took things so simply that the entire game took place in a single hallway, Medical Layers has several rooms -one hallway included- you search, including a waiting area and an operating room; and while I do enjoy having the extra scenery, it comes with a cost. Call me stupid, that I have the mind capacity of a bag of chips, or call me an ambulance, but I can't keep track of all this stuff , man. There's six rooms on each floor, which means that you have to memorize all six rooms, and scour them top to bottom for clues, every single time. It's not at the level of absurdity that is Bump in the Night
(as much as I liked that game, exploring a three story house for anomalies is insane)
, but still; remember the saying that less is more. The anomalies themselves aren't really helping matters, as they're either freaking obvious
(a closet opens, and dozens of bloody body bags fall out!! completely normal!)
or as inconsequential as you could get
(hey.. someone stole my pen!! HR??!)
with basically nothing in between. The game controls just fine, and it can get pretty freaky at times, but eventually I was just tired. Tired of losing my streak for something like a missing sticky note, tired of the obnoxious scares screaming in my face, and tired because I'm writing this at like 3:00 in the morning.
(gone wrong)
(not clickbait)
(the dead speak)
(like and subscribe)
(thx)
As I said in my Exit 8 review last year, anomaly games are a little bit difficult to explain in terms of production value, because they're just the same layout over and over again for like two hours; and if you don't like what you saw the first time, chances are you're not going to like it the twentieth time. Still, as for what it is, Medical Layers is competent. Every room has a respectable amount of detail; with the old beds and wheelchairs crowding the halls, tables covered in pill bottles and syringes take space in the operating rooms, and each cubicle has not gonna lie a pretty decent computer set up in the office area. It's not amazing
(heck, Dementium: The Ward for the Nintendo DS still beats it by a fair margin)
and the developer already stated that most of the assets were premade on Unreal Engine, but it's still pretty good; especially for a one man team! As for the scares, they do be kinda scary! It's mostly just generic zombie dudes, either covered in bloody bandages or missing limbs (or sometimes both), and they go all like AAAAARRGGHGHH BLEEAAH and run at you and stuff. Nothing you haven't seen before, but the detailed models (which the creator may or may not have made) and freaky noises often did get a jump out of me. However, all these anomaly clone games are really making me appreciate the subtlety that is Exit 8's horror. When that game wanted to get loud, it was loud. When that game wanted to be freakishly quiet, it did. And when the game wanted to do something around the middle, it did, and it was incredible. The security cameras suddenly turning on and filming you; a pair of eyes peeking out of a slightly open door; the missing and uneven tiles on the ceiling forming a face ; those things are all simple at heart, but have stuck with me more than any stupid zombie could. Also, it's a bit odd, wouldn't you say, that the default perfect hospital room you're supposed to compare everything to is already covered in blood. like, this place is so terribly managed that the halls and stuff being all clean is considered an anomaly? huh. It's also weird how you can't actually die. One of the anomalies has this super spooky
hooded dead dude
standing menacingly at the doorway, and I just ran STRAIGHT AT HIM, like I wanted to give him a big hug
(hey, he looked like he needed one!)
and nothing freakin' happened. Another funny thing happened when I spotted a man (I'll call him Billy) strapped to an operating table, screaming, and struggling to get free; and I decided to take a quick selfie with him, but then
Billy DID break free and started shaking me
and I somehow glitched and fell through the ground, but the game considered that a win, and I ended up at the start; one point ahead. And then there are just your average bugs, which are neither funny or fun. The seams of the walls don't line up as well as they should, so you're flash-banged with a solid white box every single time you pass a doorway. The lighting never looks the way it should, glitching into the walls, and leaving some very odd looking shadows. The game runs very inconsistently, and not once did it reach the promised “60 FPS” I set it to . And as far as I could tell,
the game never once had an anomaly in the bathroom OR the supply closet. You could've had like a janitor zombie, or a pooping zombie. IDK man.
Do you like The Exit 8? Answer that, and you'll essentially get your answer to if Medical Layers is worth your time. Minus some technical differences and scares, they're the exact same game. It's yet another walking simulator where you go around spotting the difference in some creepy setting. If you already like the genre, you'll probably like the game. But if you DON'T like it, or have yet to even experience it, this game will not change your mind.
(and I'm sure I'll more or less say the same exact thing about Distorted Hallways)
As for me, it was alright, but not nearly as frightening as that time I got stuck in an MRI machine. now THAT was some real scary stuff!
