Sandboxels was created by R74n and was released to the web on December 15th, 2017 and on Steam May 16th, 2025. I put in a good few hours into the web game before I just knew I had to have it on Steam, and for just $0.99 it was a steal. If you are like me and played the falling sand game all those years ago, the moment you load in you will be met with a huge wave of nostalgia. You'll place sand and dirt and maybe a little water pond and before you know it, you'll be googling the melting point of galvanized steel in an effort to make your own foundry. This game has amazing potential for teaching people chemistry and giving them an amazing jumping off point for learning more advanced things. You can play the game for free HERE, but I beg you to spend the dollar here and show your love to R74n 10 Pilks out of 10 Udders

One dollar and you get a nice sandbox game with a lot to offer. The base game is fun on its own but on top of that it has mod support! A nice little toy to play with. Especially for one dollar, you are getting more than your moneys worth. If you're like me and were a fan of the original "the sandbox" by pixowl before it got delisted from the play store, then you will LOVE this game! From what I know pixowl might've gotten inspiration from this game judging by the similarities, but I can't confirm anything so take that with a grain of salt. I've played many sandbox games of this nature, and they are all fun, but this one is probably one of if not my absolute favorite of the genre. More on the mods, they are quite easy to use, no mod loader or anything required, you just click the button that says "mods" and you just type the name of the mod (they have a github with a list of them) and include the mod extension (in this case .js). Even though the mods require internet connection, the game itself can be played even offline, so the only thing you would be missing offline is mod support and thats basically it. There are some pretty wacky mods that make the game a lot more enjoyable, but again, the base game itself is also quite enjoyable, so if you don't wanna use mods or are playing offline it's still a very fun experience. Most sandbox games are fine on their own, but mods easily make this a step above. I'm someone who while I enjoy games on their own, modding support whether official or just endorsed by the creator always sweetens the deal for me.

Played it a lot on my phone during boring days and long waits. I'm glad to finally see it on steam and support it. Kudos to the dev!

Typical game that comes your way when you least expect it and never knew you needed it until it becomes irreplacable. Thank you.

The web version is great. Such a fun game to mess around in. But now there's the steam version. Don't buy this if you play on Steam Deck. You can't resize the screen (not the canvas, the whole screen) in desktop mode, meaning your display will be quite small even with the biggest canvas setting. Gaming mode is even worse. It's locked at a 4:3 aspect ratio with image quality fuzzier than my cat, no matter how much I tamper with the resolution on the game page thing (idk what it's called). Please add an option to alter the resolution within the game itself. A great game, just ruined a bit by some fixable issues. Thank you in advance for any outcome.

Sandboxels is like the ultimate sandbox. There are no rules and you can even break the "rules" of the game itself by getting mods and this is all for under 2 dollars steal of a deal imo + it supports the creator, who could use a buck or 2 ngl

Okay, so first of all, the material/element library is impressive. There is so much to choose from and quite a few of the elements have unique reactions with each other. Most of the options are also really good and almost none of them seem pointless. The graphics are also good, I like the look of most of the elements. This powder game does have a few issues though. First of all, it would benefit so much from a larger environment, so smaller pixel size. The game runs without issues at its current size and seems like it would run just as well being twice the size. A much better and easier to use UI is also needed. The UI could be a lot better, it is very cluttered now and even after a few hours of playing, I still waste too much time looking for things. It would also be good to be able to save and load games and maybe even just mark and save an area that can be spawned or pasted into a new environment. A bit like how contraptions work in “People Playground.” If these blueprints were a feature, something like adding Steam Workshop would also become a possibility. [strike]This is probably the best powder game option currently on Steam and incidentally also the cheapest. But with the changes above implemented could become the best powder game made so far.[/strike] I had originally crowned this as the best of its kind on Steam, but I was at the time unaware of who the true king actually was. So I highly recommend to try out “The Powder Toy.” It is free to play and just bigger and better than Sandboxels in every way. __________________ Follow my Curator for more!
