The game has a good premise, but that is about all it has going for it. Even the most basic enemies are damage sponges, and the game has no real sense of progress sense it is just wave after wave of enemies. If enemy health totals were changes I could see the game being more fun, but as it stands now it is a boring crappy shooter.

I paid $2 for this and while I don't expect much for that price I do expect a functioning title, the game crashed on the last story level and I apparently lost all of my progress to that point. What I did manage to play, I have a luke-warm reaction to, games that chase after this same or simmilar aesthetic exist and they do it better, Tron 2.0 Tank Universal 1 and 2 Black Ice all of those do a better job of what this game sets out and falls short of Again though I was willing to overlook such things until the game crashed and I lost all of my unlocked story levels.

Update has made the game much more enjoyable and playable. Controls easier and can pick up game with arcade mode. Wasn't a big fan before but really appreciate the authors efforts to improve the game and happy that I now have a game I can enjoy.

Plays much more like an FPS than screenshots would have you believe, with the ability to sprint, jump, and cycle through weapons. You pickup various weapons (a shotgun, rocket launcher, plasma rifle, etc...) and pray health* drops as you eliminate waves of enemies on a variety of levels (*that being said, when you clear a wave of enemies, you restore some health.). The enemies are varied with airborne, huge tank ones, infantry, etc... It's a cool-looking game if you are immediately into the 'retro game' / 'Tron' aesthetic, and it looks better in motion while playing for yourself. Some more variety in the gameplay with the enemies attack patterns/animations or level objectives beyond "shoot everything else more than it shoots you" during these waves would make the game way more refreshing, but I've enjoyed each time I've booted it up and tried to get past its difficult swarms of enemies. Perhaps most importantly the game's weapons and explosions all have weight to them and they're enjoyable to use. I wish you had more traversal options, like a dash or a double-jump of some kind, but the main sprinting and strafing feels reliable and smooth for the most part. It would be nice to see some kind of powerup system to modify the main rate of fire, range, or damage of the weapons but the game plays more like an old school shooter relying on the player strafing/jumping enemy attacks while constantly blasting the opposition. There are some portions of the game that can really kill the smooth pace of the combat. For some reason -level design spoiler-
(the water looks cool and all, but then once you go underneath the water and look around there (thus far 3 levels in..) has been NOTHING underneath beyond a few fish, which is a cool, surreal moment when everything above is so much different, but it feels very underdeveloped,
add to that fact that whenever the player falls into these areas, they have to clumsily navigate to one of very few ladders placed around to get out again. I have seemed to get stuck at the top of these ladders very often, only to have to go back down a bit, come back up, orient the game to lift my player over these barricades/ladders but it really kills the dashing pace of the main aboveground gameplay. It didn't kill the game altogether for me or anything, but I just avoid the water from afar now. If anything, I just wish the scope of the game were larger and included something along the lines of going into buildings, fighting underwater, or in the air beyond mostly all combat taking place along a far horizon line at the infantry level. There is very little to no story, nor do I think there should be since the game is pretty straightforward altogether. I like the music and graphics and the gameplay is fast and reliable despite the aforementioned ladder bs.

I got this game because I had been looking for a good BattleZone remake and I must admit the aesthetics of this game where well done, but I wish you could get in to the Cobra at your spawn point or other vehicals. This isn't really BattleZone, it's just an OK FPS. The Steam page claims : "An armoury of loud and heavy weapons; feel the destruction!" The actual weapons in this game are neither Loud nor Heavy and don't cause me to feel the destruction. It had promise but ultimately disappointed.

A fast FPS game in a world of robots, vehicles, turrets and spaceships, everything is against you. You crashed with your spaceship, now you have to kill all incoming waves, save the robo dudes and collect some messages to find your way back home. Awesome weapons and weapon-visions, epic old school sounds and a cool soundtrack in the back, nice achievements, 4 different game types (story mode included), all in all set in a really stylish neon world to praise the good old times (C64...). A must play for all retro neon old school fps freaks and everyone else i guess hehe have fun.

I really like where they are going with this but the game looks and plays like an Early Access title despite being 'released'. I'll come back to it in 6 months maybe, but right now the level of jank is way too high for me to enjoy playing. Rally cool soundtrack though. Some notable issues:

The crosshair has very little to do with where bullets actually hit.
Very little impact response from bullets which compounds the previous problem.
Increasing the FOV hides the HUD.
Huge pools of water that are easy to fall into but have no-way out except completely broken ladders.
Low-res textures and bad aliasing on the titular 'vectors' cause a lot of flickering and means that the game only looks like 80s vector graphics if you kinda squint from a distance; the visual style needs a lot of work in general. (Update: there was a new version pushed that makes the water invisible when playing on a linux system with radeon mesa graphic drivers. This makes the game unplayble.) Feels like the old Battlezone, where the vector drawn tank sneaks up behind you. Lots of different enemies, different goals that you have to figure out on your own, and seems like a lot to the gameplay. The game might support a gamepad controller, but it seems to want to use a mouse and keyboard. A little repeatitive, but for less than five dollars it is worth checking out. Works very well on ubuntu linux 16.04 with radeon mesa drivers. I was an arcade Battlezone fan, and this really scratches that itch.

Great game, especially for the price. Reminiscent of the classic Battlezone, but with very pretty neon graphics & more advanced enemies.

Vector Wars was created with a team of 3 people. Proof that in 2015 it is still possible to make a good first person shooter. A new game using the old school method: Simplicity. Games have never needed realistic graphics. Nor intricate story lines and complex characters. All they need is the "you vs them" formula. Give us a bunch of weapons and an army to destroy. There is an old expression and it even applies to game design: "Keep it simple, stupid." We as gamers don't need a "motivation" to blast the bits out of killer robots from space. Its just fun to do so! Pro's + + 15 Powerful Weapons! + 9 Large Open Worlds! + 5 Game Different Game Modes! + Waves of Rampaging Robots to Wreck! + Neon Tron-like Visual Style! + Pulse pounding 80's techno soundtrack! Con's - - No Mulitplayer - maybe in the future? Thank you Super Icon Ltd for satisfying us old school gamers. Buy Vector Wars Now!
