Rio (THPS3) simulator Okay, actual review time, sorry. This is a very first impressions based review so there's a lot of rambling ahead. Haven't spent much time in this game yet but I definitely will in the future. Likewise, this review will be a WIP; I'll make sure to add thoughts as I play more. From what I've played, the game is very fun. Very close to something like THPS1/2. This is a really promising looking game. I am, and I think most people are, reviewing the ideas here, and that is to say the basis here is very good. It feels good to hit long, sprawling lines and the arcade-y spirit of the Tony series is very much here. The movement speed is a bit slow (hence the THPS1/2 comparison in my mind); the character is very weighty feeling, and while the base speed is low, it's not hard to boost it by getting into a combo. As it stands now, seeing as there's only flips, manuals, grinds, and other miscellaneous movement options, it's a very fundamentals-heavy game. Its manual/rail balance is surprisingly forgiving, though the repeat rail restriction is a bit more strict than in THPS (you can't grind the same rail at all in a combo without penalty [though this might be for shuffles, I'm not 100% sure if it applies on long lines yet], whereas in THPS you can regrind w/o penalty so long as it's not the same); this puts an inherent restriction on how you have to approach the grinds. I think it's fine to have this, but it does add more risk to trying to gain speed than I'm used to (this is more a personal gripe than anything); you can't shuffle b/w two rails to quickly gain speed without at least a small penalty. The lack of specials and grabs (again, coming from a Tony mindset) and quarter pipes as a whole(!) does lead to a very street-centric playstyle. In a sense, it's like if Skate had Tony Hawk's combo system. Sorta. I think it's fine as it is but having more vertical options down the line would be very exciting to see down the line. I know it's planned and that makes me very, very excited!! As for immediate things to address, my only realsuggestion is REBINDABLE CONTROLS PLEASE AND THANK YOU!!! I'd love to be able to turn with triggers and not bumpers (and I know I could use Steam input for now but I'd prefer reverts and turns being on the same buttons. Weird habits, sorry); likewise, I'd kill for a toggle for 180 spin taps (yes, I'm that person, sorry.), but that's besides the point. EDIT: There's also a weird issue with [strike]wallrides to grinds dropping combos (I think? I usually drop combos right after going for a wallride into a grind); not really sure what causes it[/strike] bumping into walls before grinding dropping combos; it's a mild annoyance, nothing dealbreaking. Either way, I really look forward to the development of this mod!! I'm especially excited for custom levels; I'm 100% going to make something for this game. Hitting a mil felt really good and I'd love to grind out some higher combos. :^) PS: I love Sin City!! and Shoutout reTHAWed!!

As of 06/29/2025, this game in it's current development state, although clearly a work in progress, shows a potential growth in mechanical/technical feature set that is pretty exponential, with each update adding something really good for the game, as of now the game is already pretty fun to boot up and combo in, and i can say that as the years go by, eventually this game, once it reaches it's "finished" or "complete" state, will be one of, if not the best skateboarding game of this decade.

While cheapskate is in early access right now, it's still relatively fun to play. It's definitely worth the price tag and is a cheaper alternative to the skating games on the market right now.
