If you are looking for a replacement to Sim City 4, keep looking. Even though this game has the best city building tools around, the simulation itself is complicated and boring. Also, there is no map making tools available which takes away from the replay value.

As the 2012 edition is now available for pre order, i thought i'd review this for those thinking of getting the new version.
It is one of the best user friendly city sims around. The gameplay never seems overly stressful like the hectic simcity classics, instead it is about building rather than micromanaging, I can relax while playing, sure problems arrise but your city wont collapse if you spend a lil time just cruising around in one of your sims cars for a 1st person tour of your city. If you start over spending it is simple to just delete your most expensive buildings from a well organised list that takes you straight to the culprits.
The game UI makes it all light work and enjoyable and the graphics are great, sometimes you can mistake it for sattalite imagery.

When I beta tested Cities XL I honestly thought that this was the future of the City-God type genre. In beta Cities XL allowed you to connect to a server which was in the form of a planet and find a spot to settle down and build/manage your city of your dreams even allowed you to build great wonders like the Imperial Temple from old time Japan.
I could play it for hours easily.
Now it's out of beta now and there's no servers, no friends list, no trading, no setting up business deals, and no awesome imperial temple, because the developers of Cities XL were not making enough money to keep it running and they fail at life.
A Good Game........Down the drain

A lackluster but promising stab at the city-building genre. I've found a few bugs with businesses refusing to open, but past that it's a solid game.

This game is similar to Simcity, and it could be a great game, but it has a huge problem related with a memory leak (to continue playing we need to reload every played hour).
If this problem is solved, I think this could be a great game!

The game requires you to create an account and register the game outside of steam. But the webpage no longer works.

The citybuilding genre died with the last of the SimCities. Cities XL is proof of that. It is a game that came with many great ideas, an MMO like concept where all the player cities were interconnected through a flowing global economy being the best by far. Unfortunately this concept died rapidly thanks to mediocre sales and poor execution and the online aspects were shut down, leaving the early adapters feeling rather foolish.
In it's basic form Cities XL is just another average citybuilder that has oversimplified everything. There is no progression of access to advanced buildings, traffic is easy to deal with and you'll never run out of money after your first couple of games. It's just too easy and too boring.
I miss SimCity.

It's been a great game to play - either for a few minutes, or for hours at a time. Complex and challenging, without losing the fun. Some of the mods definitely improved the satisfaction with what I could create - especially the ones that allowed free moving of objects and those that gave me detailed control over traffic management.
