If this game were an actual person, I'd let it fuck my sister.
That's how highly I feel about it.
9/10.
I'd give it a 10/10 if it had online co-op. Even without it, it's not taking anything away from this game.
Buy it.

I want to start this review off by letting everyone know that I am by no means a professional reviewer, i'm just someone who really loves games, and I like to play indie gems from time to time.
Alright so going into this games I kept my expectations in check due to being burnt by other games in the past, but I figured for $8 why not? But to my great pleasure this game is FANTASTIC.
Graphically the game looks handrawn reminds me of games like Critter Crunch with the 2D art work, the bugs splatter, the blaster/power up effects look good, and the bugs themselves look really good for what it all is.
Gameplay wise it's fairly simple but challenging, the bugs bounce up and down across the screen and you're character runs across the same screen only allowed to vertically (up), now on paper this sounds fairly boring and standard, but when you consider other elements like; creatures breaking into smaller variations of themselves, some creatures shooting little beams that could hurt you, stage hazards and more, it adds variety and challenge to the gameplay all while you're trying to keep a combo meter and your high score rising in order to reach individual goals in each level.
It seems pretty simple but as i went on and was pushed to increase my combos and score I found myself becoming more agile and offensive in my appoarch against these bugs, as opposed to waiting for them to bounce and go on killing them, more often than not i would rush them before they even hit the ground once.
The audio in the solid as expected, the musical score isn't anything too blaring or annoying, and usually i'm too focused on keeping my combos up to really care about the music.
Finally the replayablity in this game is actually quite excellent, mroe often than not I found myself repeating levels to hit each of the goals with in the levels, and even switching to a harder mode to challenge myself...I failed to mention this earlier but I actually enjoy how the harder mode mixes up the enemy spawns as opposed to just being the same as the lower modes with more enemies.
All in all, I love this game, the moment I played the demo, closed it out, and kept coming back to it over and over again, I knew I had to buy it, I reccomend that you do the same :)

Writing a review of The Bug Butcher one month after buying it, and having played it for 13 hours. I bought it during a sale and my expectations were that it would be a good arcade shooter. I installed it immediately, and it used up just less than 1 GB storage. I'm playing the game on Linux operating system and it is working fine. (Often when games are built cross-platform, e.g. Windows, Mac, Linux, then they are typically better quality with less bugs than single platform titles - and we all reap the benefits.) The game has played perfectly with no crashes or problems.
My expectations were exceeded. This is a fantastic game. Really fun to play. Fast frenetic action. Really like the art-style, the music accompanying the levels, the great variety of Alien Bugs that you fight. This is glorious fun. There's a decent amount of replayability, even when replaying the same level. On each play through, you get different power-ups, you might shoot down one Alien Bug instead of another, and owing to the different order of opponents the level can play out very differently.
There are numerous in-game and Steam Achievements to chase after (I've managed 52% so far, and it'll probably be beyond me to get them all). I like the fact that you can play without too many keys. I'd rather concentrate on the action when gaming rather than struggling with the gamepad or keyboard. Keys are Left, Right, Shoot (hold for continuous), Dash, and Special. Each level to play through is fairly short, typically taking about 5 minutes, so you can fit in a short game easily. Although once you've played one level, well, the temptation is to have another go :)
The Combo system in the game is cool and frustrating in equal measure. To reach the highest scores, you want to deliver Combos... And to clarify - a Combo in this game is a continuous run of gunning down the enemies without being shot yourself *and* there is a small time-limit between each kill (take too long and you lose the combo).
TL;DR:
This game is fantastic, better than I expected it would be. The action is wild. The alien bugs are well-animated, diverse opponents. There is plenty of replayability. A really fun arcade shooter, in the style of old-skool video game "Pang". Highly Recommended!

TRY THE DEMO FIRST! I actually didn't play this over an hour before getting board with it. Sat in the menu for my card drops after that. It's not bad, it's just not addictive enough for me.
One look & you're thinking "Castle Crashers with guns?" That's about right. It has a similar feel but can't beat Castle Crashers (A+++). This was made to be a frantic heart-pounding game due to a deadly threat. Your immersion is based on reaction, timing & power. But the game just keeps breaking it's own rhythm with forced pauses & inability. A great looking game (Solid B) but loaded with petty gameplay flaws; Buy it on sale.
Top 5 Cons=
One Hit Kills: The game is on easy. I have Full (8) life. Why do we have monsters that kill me in one hit for no reason? In fact, most of my Cons are based on this kind of stuff since I have such a limited way to fight. Easy=/=instadeath.
You Can Only Shoot in One Direction (up): This is an intentional game design decision that is just painful & crippling. Being unable to shoot at angles or just in front of you breaks immersion; especially when you have a bug standing right next to you. Maybe they did it so you can't just laser the whole room? /shrug Sure... but they could have just made a limit to the laser range.
Bug Boys Can't Jump: When you have a bug standing right next to you while commanding the powers of Ice Gernades & a Laser imbued with pure deadly hellfire, but can't jump over an immobile bug that is in your way... /sigh... You get crippling immersion breaking again.
No Seemless Transition: You finish a "room". The score pops. Fade to black. Load the next "room" in the same "room". I should be running from room to room or never leave the same room since the background stays the same. The game shouldn't need to stop & reload for each level. Just have me walk into the next room on the same floor or signal to begin the next phase in the same room. My immersion ends with each "room" completion. Castle Crashers got this right with side scrolling, how did Bug Butcher get this wrong?
Upgrades vs Difficulty vs The Timer: I should be able to keep my upgrades regardless of the difficulty. The difficulty should effect my cash rewards. I shouldn't be able to upgrade my weapon only twice depending on the difficulty. My timer should be based on my abilities to keep it balanced. All of these things were not made to work with each other. They are each a part of the whole, when they should be one whole organism with co-dependant organs.
The Good Stuff=
5. The Art: Looks great but not enough of it. I just see the same fantastic background for too many rooms.
4. The Controls: Seemless reaction time & configureable layouts. The game fits to you, not the other way around.
3. The Combat: This is where you fall in love with frantic heart-pounding. The power-ups and weapons were well thought out. Their balance give each weapon a personality rather than a weakness, Wanted to outrun bugs with normal movement though.
2. The Animation: I dont feel like I'm seeing mobs. I feel like I'm seeing "real" bug/monster movement for their universe. In a way, this is so good it is bad. This gives you the most immersion (IMO).
1. Epic Music. The trailer song "Two Steps From Hell-Invincible" played and you knew you had just been hooked with an AMV (Animated music video). If this didn't follow up the actual game with epic and/or techno music the only answer would be righteous fury for such a sin. Thank you for all the ear drugs.

Played the game on Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 with Logitech 710 gamepad (Xpad driver) and I can say that it plays without any problems. Since I got it on sale (3.99 €) it is very good value for money.
Bug Butcher is basically a Pang in a sci-fi environment with really nice cartoony graphics and tight controls on a controller. It is suitable for short daily bursts of play which is a major plus for me. The difficulty is also nicely balanced, it wasn't too easy with some levels taking more than 20 attempts to beat. Game has a local co-op so you can enjoy it with your family/friends.
This is just my kind of game: simple addictive mechanic, nice graphics, tight controls and can be played in short bursts.
Highly recommended.

As someone who grew up with Pang, I love this game. That this game took inspiration from Pang is no secret. The controls are good, and I like all the twists and new ideas this adds as opposed to just being a carbon-copy game. The difficulty is increased at a good pace, and new types of enemies are introduced.
I don't understand how people think this is "more of a mobile game". It's great that you could play it on mobile, but with the tight controls and fast action, I can't imagine playing it without physical buttons / a gamepad.
Music is awesome (I could do without the voice grunts, but no big deal).

The game does what it says. Run back and forth beneath bouncing targets, without getting hit. Gameplay strongly encourages level-replays to get upgrades. The gameplay is super repetitive (only a third of owners got the "kill 1000 enemies,") but there is a demo to try over and over. The animations and graphics of the enemies make each level feel interesting, and the difficulty slider will keep the game accessible.
Only problem is the keyboard controls are pretty dodgy, and I found no way to remap the gamepad controller. Again, try the demo, and see if this is an issue for you.
Zapped bugs on an old ubuntu linux desktop with radeon mesa graphics and an xbox-type gamepad controller. The game uses the Unity game engine, and it takes up 1,000 MBs of diskspace.

OVERVIEW: Ever heard about the saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it!"? Welcome to Bug Butcher, heavely inspired by Pang but aiming to take it up to the next level. The storyline of a laidback hero attempts to add flavour to it, did it make it?
Pros
-» Gameplay: Feels very polished with the dash option, multiple weapons and a chance to upgrade them
-» Soundtrack and sound effects: cute voice effects and well chosen groove for the mission ahead
-» Graphics: appealing backgrounds to comeback to
-» Replayability: massive when you consider panic co-op mode or attempting to go up the world online ladder
-» Difficulty: Easy to get into
Cons
-» I am surprised in a good way by this game, so nothing i feel I need to speak about here
SUMMARY:
8.3/10 gaming scale
Disclosure: After clearing the main campaign and, as I comeback for new sessions or new updates arise by developers, I intend to keep revising this review
