Hyperspeed is a good game.
It's not the best, but for $7 bucks it's worth it, and if you dont mind first
gen of 3d graphics. It's replay is some what limited. but it takes awhile
to get through the 4 systems.

This game brings me back to late nights in the early 90's. Very few times, have I felt so much nostalgia.
This is a really solid game. The graphics are dated, sure, but they don't attempt anything they can't accomplish. The consequence is that you may not care that the ships are super low-poly, and that the aliens are literal cartoon characters. The 70's/80's-style SciFi garb of the humans in the intro adds delightful flavor.
I'm going on about the graphics, but that's not the strong point of this game (even though we were all pretty impressed back in 1991). This is a game about solving puzzles. You need stuff. Aliens have stuff. You'll have to trade with them, but not every race has every resource you need, and they all value different goods at different rates. Find the right things to trade to who, and you'll have an abundance of resources. You'll have to figure out who to make peace with, and who to wipe out, as you try to carve out a place for humanity in the star cluster. Furthermore, you'll need to fight many of these races, and you'll need different tactics for each. Fighting each race becomes its own puzzle to solve and execute, and what works well against one race, may be completely useless against another.
The controls for the game are simple enough to pick up fairly easily, though you'll most definitely want to make good use of that Quick Reference Card that comes with it, in the beginning at least. The learning curve is steep, but it's about the approximate size of a curb. The game makes your objectives clear, but it doesn't hold your hand or give you explicit instructions on how to accomplish them. It's up to you to figure out how to get what you need with the resources immediately available to you. The game makes you think about how to finish it, and the result is a SciFi adventure that's wonderfully immersive.
All-in-all, the game is really ambitious for 1991. Maybe it doesn't quite live up to the concept's potential, but it remains that the game is very well executed. I stayed up late into the night playing this, last night. It's very much as it was to me, back when I was 10 or 11. It has lost nothing. It's absolutely worth $7.

It's MORE of a political / social PUZZLE game, with a space simulator as the vehicle . .
AND the timer is ticking, humanity is waiting for you to solve EACH cluster / galaxy

This is a good game, but an old game. If you enjoy 90s pc titles, then this is definitely one you should check out. Some of the music is awsome. The gameplay is solid for the era. And it has good replay value if this is your cup of tea.
Do NOT come to this title expecting something impressive by modern standards.

TLDR: Oozing with retro charm, nice 3D polygon ships for the era. Seems fairly fully featured with combat, and exploration. Too dated for new users. Paper DRM. Input feels off.
Would rather try Elite Dangerous. It received quite a bit of criticism for its lack of lore, and focus on grinding towards Elite Status and being a tad on the empty side. But compared to something like Hyperspeed the newer engine, attention to ease of use and better input recognition than an old classic like hyperspeed seem worth the trade of. Would rather archive this dosbox freelancer so as to give more reliably entertaining game a greater visibility.

Grew up getting to Enjoy this Game, and watching my brother play, not knowing how Challenging and Deep of a Game that it actually was...
With many Paths you can choose to take, Quirky Characters, stellar Space Combat, and a few Secrets to figure out how to obtain, this is definitely a great Game to give some of your time to
Glad I do not have to pull out an old Computer and the floppies for Hyperspeed, I can just load it up from my Steam Account, Play this Classic, and Share it with Friends! (plus, it will be nice to show my Bro this Blast from the Past)

I used to play this game when it was new so I tried the steam download. Very frustrating that it will freeze ( windows 11) and does not run reliably on Windows 11 regardless of the DOS emulator tried.

Yes buy it if you can get it on sale like I did. I owned the game in 1991 and downloaded it as Abandonware a bunch of years ago before Steam...it's no different. DRM is still there and it still runs though DOSBox.
TIPS:

Graphics select: 1 - VGA 265

Sound select: 4 - AdLib

Use the manual to type in the DRM question otherwise the game will freeze

After Alt-Tabbing out of DOSBox, goback to fullscreen mode by hitting Alt-Enter
The game is obviously dated, but if you stick with it, it really is a great game. But I doubt modern gamers could actually get into this game..
EDIT: just remembered a game breaking bug when I used to play it via DOSBox when this game was Abandonware and it's STILL here. At one point in the game you go to a Broodmaster World and hit 'P' to make contact and the screen goes black - but it still plays their music.
Night Dive - do you have anyway to fix this? or are you only in the business of repackaging?

This is a fantastic game from 1990 that was ahead of its time and in my opinion no game has been quite like it since within the 4x genre. For me, the immersion of the game is very good and I can get hooked playing it for long periods of time. Before playing the game, make sure that you learn all of the keyboard controls, this is not a game that can be played entirely with the mouse. Also, you will need to use the game's manual, which can be found on steam, to get past the copy protection screen when you load the game. If you skip this step the copy protection will freeze the game.

If you played Hyperspeed nearly 25 years ago, buy it again and re-live the fun from back then. For me, it is great fun.
Else, look at the graphics and decide if you can bear them. They are very basic, but the gameplay is nice. I would guess about 20-30 interesting hours at least, less if you look at a walkthrough ;-)
