I am almost done reading this. I have entered the start of Chapter 5, which I hear is the last chapter. The VN has a patch. I installed it, and I have no idea what it adds. Apparently it's more story content, but I don't really care. You may hold the misguided belief that this is a story about paranormal anime people fighting evil ghosts. This is not the case. Eject the thought from your mind. In the whole VN, I have seen only one good scene where the characters fight an evil ghost. They're in a spooky school, the evil ghost shows up, and the characters have to come up with a way to kill it. That scene was good. I wish this VN was full of that. Aside from that scene, every single instance of the characters fighting an evil ghost is ruined by massive flashback scenes. For example, there's one scene where a character goes crazy because an evil ghost possessed her. Things are getting good, and then...we take an hour long detour about an actual dog telling its life story. I didn't think things could get worse, but Chapter 4 is somehow worse than the previous three chapters. So, there's a big, scary antagonist right? A truly terrifying individual. She wastes no opportunity explaining how she could snap every character we see like twigs if she felt like it. You can tell that there will be a massive showdown between Team Good Guy and this monster of a person. In fact, she's almost like an eldritch abomination with the lengths the characters have gone through to keep her contained. She came close to killing everyone before, and they're doing their very best to ensure that never happens again. And then she simply drops dead, offscreen, in Chapter 4. And then we get a 2 hour monologue from some lady who feels happy about how smart she is for solving everything in the plot. This is after another 2 hour monologue where that same lady talks about a cast of completely new characters, and how great being a mother is. I came close to putting the game down right then and there. But I'm no quitter, and I want to have a full understanding of how awful this POS is. I'll report back after Chapter 5 if there's anything else worthy of mention. Oh, and in case you're wondering: The girl in blue, the girl in red, and the trap in green seen in the promo material have a pathetic amount of screentime. I've seen Blue Girl and Red Girl try to fight an evil ghost exactly once thus far, and they lost said fight. In the other fights, they instantly surrendered. It's amazing how two girls hired to kill people are so completely inept with combat.

This is going to end up being a rather general review of Kinsenka because there's an awful lot in this visual novel and not much of the story can be spoken about without going into some spoilers. tldr;; It's a well written emotional story that is entertaining, but is definitely not light reading. Recommended to most readers. Positives: - Emotional scenes and stories within stories. This visual novel got me emotional multiple times throughout starting from relatively early on. - Just enough tone changes so that the story does not become one-note. Some sections had some comedy or some light slice of life sections in order to change it up. - The music is atmospheric and adds to the experience. I also think the theme song is very well done. - Localization was done well. If you want to nitpick I'm sure you can find some things - but overall it's well done. Neutral: - It's a heavy story. There are some things in here that are hard to stomach and are not for everyone. Including - general spoilers -
child abuse, murder, some descriptions of more extreme gore, but the worst of it is not shown in the art
so it may not be for everyone. I didn't find any of it to be too heavy, but this is definitely a place where YMMV. - I feel like the ending was a bit of a letdown compared to how well everything had been built up. To be clear I do not actually think the ending is bad, but I feel it didn't live up to the rest of the visual novel's quality quite as much. It does wrap things up nicely and presents a theme that ties everything together, but it had also built things up to the point where it was a bit anticlimactic, which leads to this neutral feeling about the ending shortly after reading it. Negatives: - The story is a bit uneven. Two of the chapters dragged a bit, including the last one. Pacing was quite a bit better through the first half of the visual novel. - A few unanswered story threads still remain, namely:
what happened to Tachibana Ren? Sai even mentions her at the very end and it gets ignored. Are Nobody and Matsuri still sharing a body?
Overall, I'd recommend this to most readers looking for a good nakige. It's not perfect, but if you liked this writer's other works then you'll probably enjoy this. I don't think any of its flaws are enough to stand in the way of this getting a high score from a lot of readers. It took me 20 hours to finish it (all other time was spent idling) - and I usually land somewhere between 50-75% of average VNDB time (for the average reader this will likely be a 30-40 hour read) - so I think it's worth the $30 cost at full price, but if it ever goes on sale it's definitely worth picking up.
