Quartermain and the Cult of Cthulhu: A Pixelated Portal to Pure Retro Gold
In an age where gaming graphics strive for ever-increasing realism, there's a special kind of magic in a title that unashamedly embraces its pixelated roots and elevates them to an art form. "Quartermain and the Cult of Cthulhu," with its chunky sprites, evocative chiptune soundtrack, and challenging gameplay, isn't just a nostalgic trip; it's a masterclass in taking everything retro and spinning it into pure, unadulterated gold. From the moment you boot up the game, you're transported back to an era of arcade cabinets and home computers where imagination filled in the graphical gaps. The visual style is a loving homage to 8-bit and 16-bit classics, meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of familiarity while simultaneously feeling fresh. Every character sprite, environmental detail, and monstrous abomination is rendered with a deliberate simplicity that belies a deep understanding of visual storytelling. It's a testament to the developers' skill that even with limited pixels, the atmosphere is thick with dread and the sense of adventure is palpable. But the retro enchantment doesn't stop at the visuals. The audio design is equally stellar, featuring a chiptune soundtrack that is both catchy and perfectly tailored to the game's evolving moods. Whether you're navigating treacherous tombs, battling grotesque creatures, or uncovering ancient secrets, the music perfectly complements the action, enhancing the tension and excitement without ever feeling repetitive. Sound effects are similarly punchy and satisfying, delivering that classic "thwack" of a successful hit or the chilling shriek of an unseen horror. What truly makes "Quartermain and the Cult of Cthulhu" shine is how it takes the core tenets of retro gameplay and polishes them to a brilliant sheen. This isn't a game that holds your hand. It demands precision, encourages exploration, and rewards perseverance. You'll find yourself meticulously platforming over perilous gaps, carefully managing your limited resources, and learning enemy patterns through trial and error – all hallmarks of the challenging yet deeply rewarding experiences of yesteryear. Yet, it never feels unfair; every death is a lesson, every setback an opportunity to refine your approach. Furthermore, the integration of the Cthulhu mythos into this retro framework is inspired. The cosmic horrors and mind-bending mysteries of Lovecraft's universe are perfectly distilled into the game's design, creating a sense of unease and dread that permeates every pixel. It's a clever fusion that proves you don't need photorealistic graphics to conjure genuine terror. In "Quartermain and the Cult of Cthulhu," the developers haven't just emulated retro games; they've understood what made them great and then built upon that foundation. It's a game that respects your intelligence, celebrates the joy of discovery, and reminds us that sometimes, less truly is more. If you're yearning for a gaming experience that's rich in nostalgia but delivers a thoroughly modern level of polish and engagement, then look no further. This is pure retro gold, and it's waiting to be unearthed.

Great great game. Shows what kind of stuff you can make with simple tools with a little effort and perseverance. The maps are fun to run through and the moment to moment gunfights are fantastic. There are some technical issues here and there just due to how the game was put together but they didn't put me off from the game. Lots of clever tricks are used from the limitations of the engine and I'm just really impressed they pulled this off the way they did.

I really enjoyed this game. It's the first boomer shooter I've completed. The only issue I'm having is getting the 60 trophies to unlock the bonus levels and truly finish the game. I have 56 currently, but loading into a level where I'm missing 1 out of 3 trophies, the level shows 3 hidden trophies. On top of that, some levels I load into through the mission select do not have a return to menu option at the start of the map. Again, this isn't a big issue to me, just annoying. The sprites are awesome, the map design is interesting, and the guns are fun; that's all that matters. 8/10.

DOSMan is extremely consistent as a publisher, and this game, developed by The Prince of Mars, is among their best! It's easily the longest DOSMan game, taking me just over 5 hours to complete. There's great enemy variety, the weapons all feel like they serve a distinct purpose, and there are enough different zones in the game the levels never feel repetitive or boring. The enemies are extremely satisfying to kill, and the movement feels great. I had an absolute blast playing from start to finish, and at $3 it's an easy recommend.

After finishing the airship level, the game crashes right after the cutscene — forcing me to replay the entire level again. And this isn’t the first time. The game already crashed once at the very beginning, and now it’s happening again. It’s honestly a shame, because this game is a genuinely fun and engaging experience — great pulpy atmosphere, solid shooting mechanics. But those crashes and the lack of proper checkpoints or autosaves kill the momentum. Replaying levels from scratch due to bugs is not my idea of fun. Fix the stability, and this could be a real hidden gem. Until then, it's hard to recommend without a warning.

A++++++++ this game is so good! I'm always shocked when a Triple A developer releases a piece of garbage unfinished game and then an indie Studio releases this amazing quality game for a fraction of the price! Every game from this company is fantastic. I own all of them and this one is so good I cannot stop playing it.

I only played the demo but I think the quality is worth the $2.99. It's one of those small but fast-paced FPS games that quickly throws you into action, sending waves of enemies to take down. The map is fairly simple and linear, locked doors are marked with colored keys, and the key is usually behind waves of enemies. To make things easier, the key has words like “Red Key” displayed above it, so it’s almost impossible to miss one. Level 1 was easy - the enemies just run toward me holding guns but don’t shoot, and they are one-hit-to die. However, level 2 introduces a whole new challenge. The giant robot shoot cannons that can kill fast, there’s room full of enemies that feels like a survival challenge, not to mention the ammo is always short. The good part is the enemies, weapons and environments vary. The main issue is that the difficulty feels inconsistent. One minute I can clear a room with enemies without losing health, the next I’m up against two deadly robots with a long health bar. Some enemies slides rather than walks in. On top of that, the camera doesn’t feel steady - it moves up and down as the player moves, giving me a bit of a dizzy feeling. I completed level 2 and returned base, I probably hit the wrong portal because it took me back to level 1. When I quit, the save was gone. There’s no “Continue” option, only “New Game,” even though I clearly noticed the autosave on the top left during the gameplay. Overall, considering the game price I’m not bothered by the issues. If you are looking for a simple, fast, challenging FPS you may want to give it a try. My curator page

As if Wolfenstein, Alone in the Dark and Indiana Jones had a weird, crazy but cool child. It's that simple, a few keybinds, some guns, some insane cheesy cultists "CTHULHU FHTAGN" and a lot of charm ! The music is really nice too in putting a mysterious tone to the game ! I just started so I don't know much about length, but it's quite good and fun so far, especially for 3 bucks !

My first impression of this indie game is that it provides for a horrible acronym. However, despite this glaring flaw, I have so far thoroughly and passionately enjoyed Quat Coc. The art style, level design, and combat, is clearly reminiscent of '93 DOOM, and '96 Duke Nukem. The gentle auto-aim provides for satisfying kills without feeling too hand-holdey. Additionally, the Dev's obvious obsession with Easter Eggs, 00's memes, and occasionally insulting the player, provides the perfect recipe for a nostalgic game that comes with a modern Lovecraftian twist. If you have any hesitation on whether or not to get this game, all I can say is this; This is the absolute BEST €2.50 I have EVER spent on a retro-Lovecraft-shooter released in 2025. 10/10
