Great expansion for the price. Has a good amount of new content and the level editor is well done.

I got Towerfall Ascension about two weeks ago and loved the game so much that I bought this DLC the day it came out. While I don't often have the opportunity to play with friends, both the base game and the DLC offer a rather solid solo/co-op mode as well as single-player only Trials that has kept me coming back to beat my previous scores time and time again. You can read all about what this DLC adds here: http://steamcommunity.com/games/251470#announcements/detail/164723537719366111
Positives:
- 4 new stages, one of which is procedurally generated (always random) in versus. A different experience every round. Also some new environmental hazards.
- The new stages are really thematic, and have some awesome music to fit the theme.
- Co-Op is expanded to 4 players for the new 'Quest' levels
- The new powerups (chest pickups) fit right in, and the non-level-specific powerups become available on the stock maps after the DLC is installed.
- The Quest-mode bosses are unique to every stage on the new levels, giving players a big refresher after fighting king-skull-demon-wing guy many times in the stock Quest missions.
- All of the stock archers and the new red one get 1 alternate skin (for a total of 9) that change their appearance/persona. Purely cosmetic but I really liked this small add-on.
Negatives:
- For a 15.00$ game, a 10.00$ price tag is on the higher side, though the DLC is quite meaty so I'm not complaining. Also I am sure the developers more than earned it.
Preference-Based:
- Continues have been introduced into the DLC-specific Quest/Co-Op mode, making the missions arguably easier considering on the hardest difficulty 5 continues with 4 lives each equals 20 lives total, compared to the stock game with just 6 lives per level. Also factor in the fact that the stock game had usually between 6 and 8 waves per levels while the DLC has, on average, 5. The new bosses up the challenge factor, for sure, and I understand the continues make the levels go by with a lot less rage, but I enjoyed the prospect of having a more serious fail state that put players back at the beginning of the level. This made the levels more rewarding in my opinion. Up to you.
- DLC is meant to be an "expansion," as in the content plugs into the stock game more seamlessly. Some will say that it’s more of the same, I say that it is more sweet, juicy Towerfall action that I know and love

I absolutely love this game! I initially bought on the switch and then bought again on steam for remote play
The game mechanics are fantastic, the retro feel is charming, the customizability makes the game feel fresh and there are cool stats for nerds!
I have played many amazing rounds of local multiplayer

New archers, new arrows, new maps, new variants.
This expansion offers a "dark word" variant for all existing archers, effectively doubling the archer selection. This of course has no impact on the game play but its still pretty nice.
The new arrows are reasonably fun and include manually trigger explosion arrows as an arrow that creates a crystal prism around the target even if dodged.
The new maps are reasonably fun, and contain new interactables that explode and new dynamic events.
And of course new campaign levels with a map to unlock at the end.
All in all a reasonable expansion that reinvigorates a game I have played too much over the last 2 years. Hopefully Matt will begin working on his next game soon!

TowerFall was already the finest couch co-op game I'd ever played, replacing Smash Bros and then shooting it from behind with a surprise arrow.
Dark World adds more arrows, more archers, more levels, more power-ups, more modifiers, and just... well, more. If you love TowerFall (and why wouldn't you love TowerFall?) you'll love even more TowerFall.
I just have to figure out what "clumsy archers" does...

Really enjoyed the original but i'm more of a solo player and this dlc greatly improve the length of the quest mode. With more maps, more difficulty levels and really well designed bosses.
If you're a fan of the game don't hesitate!

This isn't a "must buy" DLC by any stretch, and I really love Towerfall.
The extra characters are neat, they have more expressive portraits but outside of that, all the characters are basically the same so it's just some different colors.
I know the store page says it's only 4 new stages, but it doesn't make clear that the added Dark World mode only seems to have these 4 levels. Dark World Co-op mode is over in about 15 minutes unless you replay them on higher difficulties.
The new levels are all neat, and this is clearly where the value of the DLC comes in. The new arrows introduced are fun as well.
If you're not playing the game with 4 players consistently, it's kind of a mixed bag of value however.

I got the first game for $5. I got this DLC for $7.50. Bad deal? Maybe. I question whether the DLC is worth more than a few dollars. The levels look really pretty, and you double the amount of characters, in a way. In reality, you only get one extra character, but every character gets an "alternate skin". This DLC is great, but it's up to the player whether it's worth the extra cost, because the base game is absolutely good enough on its own.
Here's everything the DLC adds:
-One new archer, the red one. It's a neat character, but of course is no different than the others, gameplay wise.
-An alternate variant for each archer. Again, it doesn't affect gameplay, but it's pretty neat.
-Four new maps. They're pretty, and the fourth map is randomly generated. This includes quest mode maps, which are slightly different than regular quest mode, and you can play with four players. The boss fights are pretty fun. There's also new trial maps for each.
-Trigger arrows, Prism arrows, and speed boots. Not a ton of additions, but the trigger arrows are really fun to use.
-New variants. Check the announcements in the community hub to read them all. There's only a few significant variants, but they're pretty interesting.
I wouldn't call it a "massive expansion", but it fills out the game a lot. It's mostly inconsequential, but it will increase your enjoyment of the game. If you want to add a few more fun things to the game, go for it. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth the price. I'm glad I got it, if nothing more than to support this fantastic game.

I have only played solo co-op so far, so my review is solely based on that experience.
While the expansion only adds four new levels, each of these feels like so much more. Each stage of a level now takes place on a separate arena, giving a better sense of progress through a level and much more varied layouts to adapt to. Each arena in a level feels more alive than in the original game, and since each one caters to only one composition of enemies, each arena can be fine tuned to that scenario.
I was initially worried that the two new arrow types would seem gimmicky or out of place, but they both feel very much at home, and both add a lot more versatility to the game. The new enemy types fit in similarly.
The addition of "continues" means that you can play through a level no matter how difficult it becomes, and no matter how many times you die. One potential downside I found to this was that when beating a level, the number of continues used isn't factored in to the medal achieved, which makes it considerably easier to obtain completion medals. Continues are limited to 8 in Hardcore and 5 in Legendary, and there are achievements for beating some Legendary levels without using continues for the truly insane.
The additional archer and alternative archers all look amazing and add more character and life to the game. Purple archer ftw!
------ overall ------
This is the original game honed to perfection. If you like TowerFall Ascension then getting this expansion is a no brainer. Highly recommended.

Two qualms I have about this expansion.
1) Matt, SERIOUSLY you need a key rebind option in game. It can't be that hard. And I still cannot get this game to play on my Mac because of it. Have to boot up an old dying PC. It's borderline negligent not to include.
2) Versus mode really lacks the ability that Smash Bros has to do a mode where players have multiple lives PER stage, like they do in quest mode. It would really help mix up the action if every single mode wasn't just one life/death only per play.
Would be nice if the new stages had more waves of enemies and the 4 player quest mode was back expanded into the original, but those are perhaps excusable omissions (but still, hint hint Matt).
Other than that, it's MORE F-ING Towerfall. Which is AWESOME. This game has flawless control, fantastic music and some of the best local 4 player the video gaming world has ever seen. And contrary to some naysayers, I actually enjoy quest mode a lot. The addition of more bosses in this expansion is HELLA welcome as the original showed the potential of large screen occupying bosses but literally only had one of them. It's like Mario Kart and their continued failure to have more than 4-6 battle stages per game, it's just freaking lazy.
Love this expansion and hope there'll be more in the future.
