Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 150: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆ (8/10) [i]Crusader Kings II: Way of Life[/i] is one of the most essential DLCs for character-focused players. It doesn’t change how you win wars or run empires—but it radically enhances how you become the kind of ruler who does. By giving you control over your character’s day-to-day focus, ambitions, and even romantic entanglements, [i]Way of Life [/i]helps CK2 step into the roleplaying sandbox it was always meant to be. At its core, it’s a lifestyle system: you pick one of ten focuses (like Intrigue, War, Seduction, or Family), and it shapes your character’s growth, events, and behavior. Suddenly your ruler isn’t just a stat block—they have goals, personality, and flavor. It’s not the flashiest DLC. But it’s quietly transformational. A lot of what people remember about CK2—cheating spouses, scheming lovers, rivalries and vendettas—came to life with this DLC. 💘[b] Pros:[/b] [list] [*] The Focus system brings characters to life. Choose a lifestyle focus—like War, Learning, Seduction, or Business—and gain relevant bonuses and custom event chains. It gives direction to your ruler’s story. Want to be a celibate scholar-king? Or a backstabbing seductress? Way of Life makes it possible. [*] Huge expansion of character events. Way of Life adds hundreds of small but flavorful character events tied to each focus. These make every ruler feel more unique and allow for emergent storytelling. Your ruler might duel a rival, take a lover, raise a bastard, or spiral into madness. [*] Seduction and Romance systems. For better or worse, Way of Life introduced a full-on seduction minigame. Your ruler can attempt to woo courtiers, lovers, or even rivals’ spouses. This adds both drama and depth—and helps you roleplay messy dynasties filled with love children and scandal. [*] Better control over RP and character progression. Without this DLC, you mostly react to what the game throws at you. With it, you actively shape who your ruler becomes. Focusing on Intrigue helps you scheme your way to power; going for Hunting makes you healthier and martial. It adds purpose and flavor. [/list] 🏹 [b]Cons:[/b] [list] [*] Event spam and repetition. Many of the focus events, especially Seduction and Intrigue, repeat over and over. Once you’ve seduced 3+ people, you’ve seen every outcome. By the late game, they can feel like busywork or filler. [*] Doesn’t affect AI nearly enough. While you’re busy trying to live out your ruler’s dreams, most AI characters don’t use the system as dynamically. This creates a small asymmetry between player and world immersion. [*] Should’ve been in the base game. In hindsight, it’s baffling that CK2 shipped without any system for your character to have goals, ambitions, or meaningful personality. [i]Way of Life [/i]doesn’t feel like an add-on—it feels like something *missing* that finally got patched in for $8. [/list]
