A Game About Digging a Hole is exactly what the title promises—there’s no pretense or deeper metaphor at play. You begin in a plain, pixelated backyard, armed with a simple shovel and a desire to dig. As you dig deeper into the earth, you collect ores, earn money, and unlock better tools to dig even further. The gameplay loop is direct and easy to grasp: dig, collect, sell, upgrade, repeat. And while it sounds basic, the simplicity is part of what makes it so engaging, especially in short bursts.
Progression is tangible and rewarding. Each layer you dig through exposes new materials worth more gold, which feeds directly back into upgrades. Before long, you're swapping out your humble shovel for dynamite, battery-powered drills, and even a jetpack to help navigate the ever-expanding pit. Your hole becomes your canvas—something you carve and shape over time. There's a visual satisfaction to turning an empty plot into a chaotic, twisting descent through layers of earth and ore.
The visuals embrace a minimalist, voxel-inspired style that keeps everything clean and readable. The terrain is color-coded and textured just enough to give you a sense of progress without becoming visually overwhelming. There’s little in the way of sound design—mostly subtle effects for digging and mining—but the quiet atmosphere creates a strangely meditative tone. While some players might wish for a soundtrack or more feedback, the silence suits the focused rhythm of play.
Still, the game isn’t without its rough edges. Soil physics can occasionally glitch, leaving behind invisible fragments that block movement or interfere with tool usage. At times, explosives or mobility tools will fail to behave as expected, which can stall progress or require clumsy workarounds. These issues aren’t constant, but when they occur, they pull you out of the otherwise smooth flow of digging and upgrading.
Pacing also starts to wear thin once you've maxed out your equipment. With most tools acquired within the first hour or two, there’s little left to do beyond reaching the bottom of the hole. The big finale—a mysterious chamber waiting at the deepest level—feels more like an afterthought than a climax. After one full run, a challenge mode unlocks with specific goals to extend playtime, but the lack of deeper systems or emergent content means replay value is modest.
That said, A Game About Digging a Hole never pretends to be anything more than what it is: a short, satisfying exercise in progression and curiosity. It’s relaxing in its repetition, rewarding in its upgrades, and oddly compelling in its concept. For a game made in just a couple of weeks and priced accordingly, it delivers a refreshing, no-frills experience. It may not hold your attention for dozens of hours, but it offers exactly the kind of calm, minimalist joy that’s easy to pick up and hard to put down—at least until you hit bedrock.

Chill, fun, unique, and short. Tinder bio-sounding description aside, should probably cost a little less in its current state. Hopefully they will put out an extra area / more gadgets in a future update.

A captivating game with very simple mechanics. You dig, and that's about it. But it's so fun, and apart from the abrupt (though funny) ending, I enjoyed everything about his game. I plan to replay it again soon.

A great game that shows off some of the awesome new terrain tech UE5 has to offer, it's an easy 100% too with only 1 achievement requiring any amount of effort, took me 4 hours although 1-2 of those hours was just me trying to drain the backyard of dirt until I got bored lol.
Would highly recommend! Although there's no resolution settings, and my game was maxed at 122fps the entire time on a 144hz monitor regardless of Vsync settings. Performance was buttery smooth regardless (thanks Gsync!) without a dip or frame skipped, a rarity for UE5 games.

I'm not going to lie and say the game is bad or anything. It was a fun time and I enjoyed playing it. You dig a hole, earn money from selling ores, upgrade your equipment, and uncover the secret of some treasure. All fine and dandy, doesn't make itself more complicated than it needs to be.
I just think that for $5, it should last more than roughly one hour. There are a lot of games out there for a similar price tag that have a much longer length and greater replayability. Hopefully some more content is added in the future but unless that happens, I would spend five big ones on it.

For once put your brains a side and grab this first person “Motherload” type of experience to your Steam library. As this game is literally A Game About Digging A Hole.
Eventually once you find the treasure, remember to join the speedrun community to become the next fastest digger the internet has ever heard of.
