I LOVE THIS GAME!!! MY FAVORITE GAME I HAVE PURCHASED ON THE STEAM SUMMER SALE!!!
However, I am having a MAJOR ISSUE!
While the game ran fine for me last night at a solid 30 FPS in 1080P and I was enjoying it thoroughly, I just woke up to what appears to be an AMAZING VISUAL OVERALL!!!
Now, on to the issue. The games graphics are now glitched on my hardware and my SAVE FILE GONE!!!
Heartbreaking!!
Is there any way to roll back to the previous version, prior to the visual update?
Also, is this game getting better optimisation for the Steam Deck in these updates?
The game runs fine for me at 30 FPS at 1080P but took some tinkering last night to get it that way! Low settings, of course!
I have 4 hours of gameplay, now lost!! That is a bit upsetting, but I do appreciate this Developer a TON of making this sort of game from my childhood!
I WILL BE BUYING THE SWITCH 2 VERSION ON CART!!
PLEASE FIX THE ISSUE ON DECK!! I HOPE MY SAVE FILE ISNT TRULY GONE BUT IF IT IS THEN ITS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!
UPDATE:
Changing over to the Legacy branch appears to allow the game to run on the Steam Deck, however my previous save was sadly gone once the Developer switched over to the free Enhanced edition, and the game somehow runs rather poorly (very low FPS when in 720P and the game wants to output to 480P upon boot now).
Some things I wanted to let the Dev know about before porting to the Switch 2: in the Legacy version, the games enemies would sometimes go into bodies of water on accident and start following you. Putting some time of invisible barrier in place should prevent this glitch from happening! Also, this is a very minor detail but also adds a bit of flair to the overall oldschool aesthetic, but adding a button prompt after character dialogue, especially during the intro and cutscenes, and automatically setting the speech style to slow may help people to better understand whata going on, rather than just zooming past all of the dialogue without the average person being able to comprehend the backstory. Just trying to help out a bit! Minor details but they go a long way! :)
EDIT EDIT:
Upon collecting the first Fishy in Sweety's Spaces, I noticed that there was no collectable animation, which could help gamers to understand the task of collecting Fishies as the main task and add emphasis to the importance of the main collectible in the game! Such an animation would make this task also seem as epic as an achievement as obtaining a Fishy truly is! Just a little feedback to help out!
Also: I am quite enjoying playing this even though it is running at 480P 30 FPS on my 4K monitor via the Deck. In a very strange way, it gives it an N64 charm! 😂
Furthermore: This gives me an idea!! Perhaps add a secret "Nintendo 64" or "64-Bit Mode" in the video settings, which would essentially set the resolution to 480P, make it run at 30 FPS, and bumps the graphics back to Legacy (if possible) and enables a classic CRT filter over the top of the video, in order to give it that N64 look! Also, perhaps also make the game run at either 4:3 mode or toggable widescreen if you want to take it a step further! :)
OTHER IMPORTANT TWEAKS:
Character and enemy collision could use a bit of tweaking to its code, particularly referring to the bouncing of on enemies by our hero character friends! Maybe perhaps making the jump off of an enemies head a bit higher to give it more of a bouncy feel, preventing accidental collisions from happening and character health taken away.
Speaking of health!!
A simple tweak to the way that hearts spawn after defeating enemies can go a long way to making this game a pleasant experience for all! Ensuring that heart pickups remain on ground after enemies are defeated can go a long way!
Fishy amount on menu screen:
The Fishies deserve to be prominently displayed in the menu screen, alongside the 64 Carts, as this is the games main collectable! I would recommend, perhaps, therefore placing it above the 64 Cart in the menu system, so that we don't have to go through the Worlds totals and end up manually counting them all.
Guidance implentation for Yolkie:
We have this little flying friend here and it would be lovely if, when a button is pressed, Yolkie will start flying in the direction of the closest Fishies, then N64 carts after Fishies are all collected! Think Sparx in Spyro!
ONE LAST THING!
The world selection in the menu is fine for testing purposes, but I'd like to see this debug feature removed in the final product, as to encourage exploration of the huge beautiful hub world! Think Banjo-Kazooie. Some might think of that as going backwards, but it helps to keep that oldschool feel you're going for!
I also clipped through the statue in the Hidden Temple after collecting the Fishie there. Just a friendly heads up!
Another thing of note:
HDR is broken on the Steam Deck, resulting in funky neon graphics! Turning HDR off fixes the graphics on the Deck, but performance, as mentioned above, is very poor and the game resorts to 480P to compensate. The main branch also has glitchy artifacts on the ground that I experienced right away in the hub world when testing.
I've also found that Ratties Lair dips in frames even running at 480P on the Deck.
Found another glitch wherein I got stuck between the Portal and the wall in Gingys Glacier.
And these are just some of the minor little bugs or glitches I have found in the Legacy edition! Hopefully I was able to offer some new insight into bugs or glitches that can be ironed out and features that could be added into the final product in order to make it a pleasant experience, especially on the Switch 2! Until then, I'll be awaiting its release on the Switch 2, and I'll be picking this up both digitally and physically upon release!
