Leyline Chronicles makes a strong first impression with its stylish presentation and surprisingly engaging combat. The battle system is one of the game’s standout features, using a combo mechanic that’s reminiscent of Legend of Legaia. Stringing together attacks feels impactful and adds a satisfying rhythm to combat, especially since skills have different effects and some combinations can trigger powerful finishers. Visually, the game is mostly gorgeous. The environments are well done, but there are a few areas where the lighting is far too bright, making it difficult to see anything in certain spots. There’s a gear upgrade system, item crafting, and according to an NPC I spoke with a ring fusion system, though I haven’t reached that part yet. Because of this, loot mostly consists of materials for these systems rather than random gear drops. These mechanics add promising layers of depth and customization that should keep players invested as they progress. The story features several interesting plot threads and characters that are best experienced without spoilers. However, the writing in the early hours is noticeably weak, with clunky dialogue and odd pacing that might turn some players off. However, after speaking directly with the developer, I found them to be very open to feedback and actively working to improve these aspects in future patches. That kind of engagement from a developer is important, especially for indie games, where the person behind the project can heavily influence its future. In this case, it gives me confidence that Leyline Chronicles will only continue to improve. Thumbs up!
