DOT Defence is a goofy, meme worthy somewhat hands off RTS game. The general game play loop is this - You place your headquarters building then decide based on what 4 structures you've decided to take with you from your load out in the lobby (if you're playing Skirmish / Multiplayer), then place how ever many buildings you can. There are two types of building - Defense and Production.
Defense buildings are towers of various types (Artillery cannons with long range Area Of Effect explosive shells, Machine Gun towers which have decent range and are lethal to infantry while still being very capable against most other units, Flamethrower towers which have a much shorter range but deal large quantities of damage and can hide themselves when not in use, etc).
Production buildings are where things get a little complicated but only slightly. There are several different types of production building, infantry, tank, and mixed. The primary factory / production building produces a steady stream of infantry which occasionally tosses out a tank or two to help with the assault, then there are more specialized production buildings like the Spec Ops factory which churns out fast moving lightly armed scout infantry which are good at rapidly capturing undefended or neutral zones, snipers which have long range high damage attacks, shielded heavy soldiers who resist most forms of damage and take a pounding for the rest of the force.
Defense and Production buildings can be placed anywhere within a captured zone permitted you have the right amount of supplies to build them, in some zones you'll find special slots which you can place a building on for unique effects. Let's say you find an "attack speed" special slot, if you place a defense turret on that slot your turret will fire much faster however you could instead place a production building on that slot which will increase the volume of units produced and even add a unique unit or units to the factory's normal load out of units it produced.
Production buildings are how you'd win most of your games, you can't win the battle by just spamming defense towers in your starting zone ... though admittedly there is an incredibly annoying commander which boosts the range and damage of his defense towers so much so that they all have multiple times the range of the artillery tower and a far higher rate of fire than normal so if that guy decides to put say 3 artillery towers in the middle of the map and boost them you'll watch as whole enemy factions get wiped out in a few seconds.
Production buildings will automatically churn out units which will automatically make their way to the nearest zone that isn't controlled by you, you can select your units and direct them to a specific area but otherwise your entire army will simply revert to attacking the enemy head on, which is why I say production buildings matter, quantity is a quality all it's own and I've got 6 factories to your 3 so you may call me the Rolls Royce of unit spam.
I should add the game's humor is a little hit and miss but frankly it's a breath of fresh air to have a lighthearted yet fun and replayable game with a meme quality to it, for goodness sake the developers made the initial loading screen to get into the game the Soyjack pointing at the menu , that's just hilarious.
The game has full controller support but is entirely playable with a keyboard and mouse so don't fret there.
In addition the game has numerous buildings and commanders to unlock which offers more variety and replayability later, there are 3 game modes, the main campaign which teaches you as you play with new units and abilities as well as offering unique challenges for you to try to overcome, then there's the defense mode where you must hold off against waves of enemies while using limited resources, and of course my personal favorite the skirmish / multiplayer mode which can be played solo for those who would rather surround themselves with robots than real people (I get that).
Is the game worth the price tag? As of right now $10 U.S.D. seems a bit steep for the amount of content I've seen but this is an early access game so my hopes are high that the devs have a handle on how to create content for this game. If the devs do indeed add additional factions or units, maps, missions etc, I can certainly see it being worth the price if not more.
Personally if you've got 10 bucks burning a hole in your wallet, by all means give it a whirl for an hour, see if you're enjoying it and if you aren't you've lost an hour and nothing else. I can see this game being a very casual under the radar RTS that only a select, elite few (Enjoying your RTS session? Reharden your defenses, you'll love the next hour.) will know about but fingers crossed some big names spread the word and we see this game flourish into something greater.
