Excellent scifi civ like game, with enough unique features to stand on it's own.

Excellent challenge especially with the custom AI available that is still being updated as of this review.. Gameplay moves along at a crisp pace which helps avoid some of the tedium similar games suffer from.

It adds a lot of much needed content. This doesn't make pandora perfect, but certainly adds to the replay ability.

Two major content pieces: expansion of spy mechanics and Eclipse event. Basically, early game, there is a big wave of new monsters to come at you. This allows you to capture some interesting aliens for your army. It also keeps the opponents at bay a little bit in the early game to prevent the rush to war. This is all positive. Spy mechanics added in Eclipse of Nashira is a little disappointing for me. The game says the spies are visible on the map as neutral persons (i.e. you don't know the nationality). Now either the computer never uses them (on Normal), or the troops simply don't appear on the map.

This is a great game and I consider myself to be quite picky when it comes to 4X type games. I love the building up of an empire but dislike games where the combat is too simple. This game is visually beautiful and when the Eclipse comes the entire landscape darkens adding to the atmosphere of your empire beings stalked by Pandora's natives. The factions are limited in number (I'd like a few more). The technological progression is interesting. The combat is unusually better than the standard one-on-one combat seen in Civ type games for a number of reasons: 1. The unit variety is actually quite large. There are biological units, human ones and mechanical ones. They come in large and small, terrestrial, aerial and water-based. 2. Customisation multiplies this variety by allowing you to create ranged artillery, offensive, defensive and special-type units. 3. The designers have added a the ability to have combined arms with ranged combat, and to have other friendly units adjacent to the enemy assist in attack or defense. This is usally overlooked by designers of Civ type games (preumably because it takes alot of effort to develop) but in my view is a 'must-have". 4. Units can stack, yet there are mechanics which can counter and deter stacking. 5. Then there is the effect of terrain which has an enormous impact on combat. And these effects vary with the type of unit. It seems to me the developers of this game have gone out of their way to create something that appeals to the tactical and strategic wargamer, not just the civilisation builder. This is a fully developed game and I think it is worth the price, the DLC being essential. I would love to see further development of this game. It is very unusual and very good.

ive played this game for a while now (over 20 hours), and have never gotten beyond ~120-140 turns The AI is downright idiotic and will go from generous to furious in a single turn simply because you dont pay them a tribute.. which seems to affect all the other AI players and make their relations go down the hole as well. In my latest game, at turn 105 i had alliances with everyone.. all 7 Ai players. One demanded tribute and when i refused, he cancellled our alliance, trade pact, research pact, and non aggression act andthen declared war.... and was followed by EVERY SINGLE AI immediately. next turn i was bombarded from space repeatedly, wiping out 12 aveger tanks, 2 formers and 3 ground troopers in 2 turns. I had ONE city, ONE mine, and TWO farms... theres no way that i was polluting the planet massively, or an extreme military threat, etc etc and therfore no logical reason the AIs would all go to war, least of all at the same time. Not to mention that i was barely building tanks and they had aircraft and orbital bombardment already... after destroying my units, they did another bombadment that brought my city from a 14 population to a ONE. having similar events occur over the course of several games, i am giving up on this one util they get the AI fixed. its truly sad as the game brings good graphics, good ideas and unique mechanics to many aspects of the game. having spent 40 bucks on this game, i feel rather.... let down in a big way.

I put my opinions on the main game in a review for it. I didn't really like it and had some criticisms. As for this expansion, I don't think it helps things much. The main features seems to be a timely alien invasion, which in my experience servers to do nothing more than bring the game to a swift and unfair end. Unless you have a super-powered military, you're screwed. Forget about a diplomatic or economic victory. Aliens swoop in with devastating tech and wipe you out. Period. The new techs it brings prove useless as in my experience the aliens are well and truly entrenched before you unlock them. Agents are fine, but no help if your enemy is also being hammered by aliens. Some of the military upgrades, like mines, help some but not much. The issue is most of this tech is so far into the tree, you'd have to focus entirely on reasearch to get it before the invasion happens. Which then of course leads to a weaker military, starving people and a flacid economy due to the games unbalanced systems.

This expansion to the original Pandora: First Contact is by far better than the return of the Messari, it not only allows use of water tiles ,which take up a majority of the map, with amphibious formers but it also to a reasonable extent removes what was rather overpowered in my opinion, the Messari fighters and mothership etc. This means that you can actually play with a chance to win rather than to just get second place because you spent to much time, money and production on defeating the Messari. Though it still has a somewhat similar event ,though its much more reasonable, in that an eclipse occurs and strange out of the ordinary aliens attack. But overall its definitely a game I'd recommend.

I really like this DLC. Gives you the ability to research adv. Formers when in the 2nd technologic age. Those allow you to finally use the water effectively by placing buildings on water (just like regular formers do that on land) This adds a whole new level to the game. there are also new boni and new aliens which I wuite like. The new faction lacks a malus and also the Spy gameplay is more annoying than funny and I actually want to turn that off. Get this DLC for full price if you enjoy Pandora, but are looking for sth more in the game. If it's 50% (or more) off, then don't wait and get this thing! Together with this DLC Pandora makes a waaaay better game than Civ: Beyond Earth (and has slightly worse graphics, but hey it's way cheaper).
