While most horror games, especially on the indie side are cheap jumpscare fests with very shallow gameplay, there's a handfull of exceptions. Obviously the masterminds at frictional games are one of these, releasing banger after banger, but they are not the only one! The original monstrum may seem inconspicuous but behind the indie graphics lies a deceptively well crafted horror roguelike experience. Stranded on a procedurally generated cargo ship with 3 ways of escape facing one of 3 VASTLY different monsters proves to be a very tense experience. This is because monstrum's monster AI is very well accustomed to navigating the procedurally generated twisting halways in the bowels of the ship. Running isn't allways the best option but neither is hidding, and the monster is ever present. Monstrum rarely gives you a moment of reprieve and the roguelike nature of the game really ups the stakes and terror. Getting spot when you've nearly escape is nothing short of heart pounding, with few horror games reaching these adrenaline heights. Music and sound design really help with this as they overlay a terrifying ambience on top of the tense gameplay. An assortment of loot can even the odds a tiny bit, and there's lots of freedom in player expression but in the end you remain prey and they remain predator. Good luck!

Monster's constant stuck, Thousand-Mile Eye, non-stop chase, no-sound around corner makes this game a junk.

Props to this game for making 100%ing it a reasonable experience. Overall, this game is worth the 3.59 I spent on it, but not much more.
After you get past the starting fear, you kinda realize that walking holds no purpose. You can just run around. The enemy can hear you, but its not that acute. If they notice you, you can outrun them. You can follow this simple two step plan repeatedly: 1) Loot until the monster finds you/ gets near you 2) Run across the map from them even if they aren't aggrod. 2/3 monsters have to directly follow you across the map, so doing so buys you time.
Which basically makes the game boil down to a looting experience. You're just looking for a set of key items to use one of the three main escape paths. Sometimes you can search what feels like every nook and not find what you need if you're going for a specific escape, so honestly, don't be afraid to restart.
I dislike how hiding is punished far more than running. I dislike how the throwing objects are basically useless. The noisemakers do what they do but better. They don't exactly tell you what you need, but you figure it out eventually. Some things are intuitive, and some things aren't. Example: You can throw the egg timer into a locked damaged door to have the monster break down the door for you.
On the other hand, you can't loot the cabinets, but you can loot the drawers. Which I didn't realize until much later. Overall, this game quickly goes from a tense game, to a time sink as you spend several minutes at a time hiding in a locker waiting for the monster to leave the vicinity so you can either continue looting or run across the whole map. The rogue like element is interesting, but ultimately doesn't add as much to the game as you wish it would. It takes more away than it adds. A competent 4 dollar game, so Ill up vote it.

6.0 out of 10 This game was definitely intense, the hallways and sharp angles make running into the monster sudden and very scary. The chase sequences are this games strongest point, and the enemy designs are great. Some other environmental hazards in this game were great, the steam and alarms were both pretty okay, however the giant steam valve phone puzzle, and the various blocked doors and there opening strategies were pretty good aswell. However this is where the games strong suits end. The story in this game was lacking, and the audio logs had poor audio that was too loud. The randomised loot mechanic was interesting at first, but I found myself looting large areas for long times with no progress being found. If the game had a forced progression of areas, i.e you cant access one portion of the ship until you complete a puzzle this problem would be gone. If you are someone who is a completionist, this game might be for you, collecting endings achievements and lore pieces. This game might also appeal to people who like chase sequence horror. However the lack of lore, and polish of modern games leaves alot to be desired. gg

Out of all my horror games, This is my favorite. Randomly generated outside the key 3 areas, and 3 different monsters. You'll never know which monster has spawned until you're already in danger. the multiplayer sequel sucks, but this game was THE BEST!

Pretty fun, the random item spawns and three possible monster make each experience pretty unique. The worst part about the game is if you have played multiple games, searching for items can burn you out. This game in my opinion is best played with a few friends and taking turns, or making the friend who scares easily play and watch and laugh at them.
