Only a couple hours in so far, so I can't speak for the whole mystery. But I had to write this review so I could express how impressed I am. They've really nailed the setting, the time period, and the characters, just perfectly. I love how it hasn't been censored for modern times at all. Two thumbs up from me.

Expelled! is a great addition to the Overboard! series, and in fact I largely connected with it better than Overboard! itself. On the one hand, I found the puzzles more accessible while nevertheless still clever and engaging. On the other hand, the characters being children makes them a lot easier to sympathise with, even if they are just as flawed as the characters in Overboard!. I also particularly love the decision to have Verity as an unreliable narrator framing the game, as it creates a stronger overarching plot between runs. I do feel that the solution to the final puzzle is too easy, and may as well not be a puzzle at all, and the following ending somewhat downplays the rest of the story, which is a bit disappointing, but otherwise I absolutely recommend this game.

I love Inkle, I do. I love a great story and unique game mechanics and interesting protagonists. I enjoyed 'Overboard'. And I love 'Expelled!''s premise. But this one was frustrating and easy to get lost in. My time was divided between trying to guess the precise decisions that would help me survive another hour without ending up at the headmistress office, to failing to understand what should be my next move. I did not enjoy the frustrating experience, and gave up after several hours of gameplay. This was not 'overboard', but 'overwhelmed'.

Every time I play an Inkle game I know I am gonna get two things: narrative and an absolutely intricate story where nothing is at it seems. Expelled! is similar to Overboard but I love it so much more because of the lie/truth doubt that even the player has at the start. You do not know what really happened until you reach a specific point in the story, and even there you will encounter many more secrets than what happened to poor Louise!
