**Steam Deck review** For those purchasing this - there is a pinned topic in Discussion on how to make the game controlable on the SD. I have put a couple of hours into this game and have got to say that I am very impressed about the graphics which are 2.5D with a very alive background. There is a lot of depth in this cartoony looking metroidvania which makes it feel alive for the player itself. The controls in the game does need to get used to a bit. You can only really input something new once the animation of your current action is finished which brings a strategic part to this game. You need to think before you do something. Fortunately, dying isn’t an issue as you have plenty of save points that function also as check points. What you notice also is that there can be quite some going back and forth through the world, which makes this to me a very exciting and time worthy metroidvania. There is 1 issues for me. The minimap is horrible, this needs to be fixed because you cannot properly zoom in and out or mark the map.

The game seems nice but it looks unfinished. The controls don't feel fluid or responsive. The volume is insanely high (I had to put minimum in game and 2% volume in windows). The map needs some UI elements : zoom / pan / markers. There is an underwater level with low gravity near the beginning of the game, and it was not a good experience with the clunky movements, so I decided to stop playing. For now it's going to be a no for me, but I'll try this game later after some patches because it seems interesting nonetheless.

---see where this game landed on my Metroidvania tier list beneath this review!--- Very neat little metroidvania if you don't mind some very repetitive backtracking due to the lack of markers on the map (Save rooms and Fast Travel rooms are marked though). Another issue with the map is that it is segmented into different areas, and doesn't show you where and how these connect together. I rarely used the fast travel points because whenever I obtained a new ability I needed to re-check every single room, so using the fast travel to skip in and out of areas would have just made that process more confusing. It would have been nice if ability-gates were marked on the map in this games' case. I probably had to sweep through most rooms of the game almost 10 times because of this. When you first start the game it is in portuguese. You need to select "Opceon" on the title screen and then switch that to english. Other than that, I didn't really encounter any jank or lack of polish. 1 bug that wasn't a major hindrence. Combat is very simple. It might look a little beat 'em up in the trailer and it has a little bit of that, but mostly handles like any 8-bit platformer, except your swings keep enemies stun-locked. You'll acquire new items which boost your stats and level up by killing enemies for EXP, though the choices when you level up felt insignificant. You'll probably just do as I did and pump the STR stat with maybe a few points into Item Drops. I was worried I wouldn't like playing something this zoomed in as my experience with games like Deedlit & Dust: An Elysian Tale were quite miserable and it was in part due to that. I was pleasantly surprised with The Throne though. Perhaps part of it was the neat visual style, but I also felt areas were interesting enough to keep me captivated. Music isn't too bad, it helps add flavour to different areas. If I'm being more critical; the underwater theme, while fitting and a nice change of tune is repetitive. There's one tune that plays through too large of an area and gets repetitive as a result of this as well. I think how open you are to repetitive backtracking is going to be the biggest deciding factor on whether this metroidvania is for you. It feels a tiny bit like Bloodstained: RotN, if it were bite-sized and more retro, without all the cool spells. I certainly enjoyed my time with it. In fact I went as far as to 100% it, which I might be the first to do (0.1% achievement). ===================== My Metroidvania Tier List (PC) (excluding Metroid & Castlevania titles) ===================== -Not an objective list, purely how much I enjoyed the games- S+ Aeterna Noctis | S Tier (Truly Special) Astalon: Tears of the Earth | Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom | Hollow Knight | S- Blasphemous 2 | Cathedral | A+ Afterimage | The Last Faith | A Tier (Amazing) Elderand | Ori and the Will of the Wisps | Doomblade^ | BioGun | A- Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights | Depths of Sanity | F.I.S.T. | Pampas & Selene | B+ Blast Brigade | Haak | Turbo Kid | Nine Sols | Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus | B Tier (Really Enjoyed) Animal Well | Alwa’s Legacy | Steamworld Dig 2 | Islets | Blasphemous | After Death | Pronty^ | Mortal Manor* | Escape From Tethys | Outbuddies DX* | Monster Sanctuary | Elliot Quest | Rebel Transmute | Moonlight Pulse | Environmental Station Alpha | Biomorph | B- Haiku, the Robot | The Mobius Machine | Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown | Ultros | C+ (Fun) Lone Fungus | Ghost Song | Death’s Gambit: Afterlife | Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night | Kunai | Kingdom Shell | Axiom Verge | Treasure Adventure Game | Infernax | Flipwitch | Momodora 4 | Momodora 5 | HunterX | HunterX: code name T | Curse of the Sea Rats | Gestalt | Skelethrone: The CoE* | Unworthy | C Tier (More or Less Enjoyed) The Throne | Plague of Yamorn* | Column on the Sea | 9 Years of Shadows | Jrago* | Laika: Aged through Blood | MF-01 Aerostrike^ | Xanthiom Zero | Carrion^ | Chasm | Wuppo | The Mummy Demastered | Catmaze | Castle In The Clouds | Omega Strike | Aggelos | Midnight Castle Succubus | Overbowed | Rabi-Ribi | TEVI | Far Star | Sheepo | Elephantasy | Mars 2120 | C- (Meh) Ato | Axiom Verge 2 | EldritchVania | Beholgar* | Astronite | Cookie Cutter | Rusted Moss^ | Grime | Moonscars | The Messenger | Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth | Iconoclasts | MindSeize | Ebenezer and the Invisible World | Luna’s Light* | Tales of Kenzera: Zau | Gato Roboto | Itorah* | Dystobel* | LoL: Convergence | D Tier (Liked some things but ultimately did not enjoy) Castle In The Darkness | Alwa’s Awakening | Nitrojet* | RIN: The Last Child* | Pharaoh Rebirth | Yoku’s Island Express | Vigil: Longest Night | Guacamelee! 2 | Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse | Phoenotopia: Awakening | Insect Adventure* | Clunky Hero* | Goo Keeper* | Headlander | Strider | Minoria* | Souldiers | Bone Appetit | The Witch & the 66 Mushrooms | Transiruby | Destroy Space Aliens | La-Mulana | Rex Rocket | Guacamelee! | 8Doors | Timespinner | Super Panda Adventures | Omega Mouse Zero* | Ataraxie* | You are Peter Shorts | Unepic | The Ramsey | Batbarian | Imp of the Sun | E-Tier (Really disliked) Worldless | Garm Ruins^ | Venture to the Vile | Aestik* | Windmills* | Sheba: A New Dawn* | Ex Vitro | Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap | The Weird Dream | Noreya: The Gold Project* | Ginsha | Iron Diamond* | Dandara | Vernal Edge | Blaster Master Zero | Medusa* | Lost Ruins | Sundered | Salt & Sanctuary | Valdis Story | Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet | Touhou Luna Nights | Chronicles of Teddy | B.I.O.T.A. | Shadow Complex | Aquaria | Nyaruru Fishy Fight | Ghost 1.0 | WarriOrb | Feudal Alloy | Apotheon | Gungirl 2 | Bad Pad* | Chakana* | Lootbox Lyfe | Slavania* | Angel’s Gear* | Fearmonium | Magicians & Looters* | Tres-Bashers* | Arcane Assembly^ | Aeternum Vale* | Troupe* | Skautfold: Usurper | Silver Axe - The Honest Elf* | Song of the Deep | Unbound: Worlds Apart | Frontier Hunter: Erza’s* | Redshot* | 3000th Duel | Songbird Symphony | Dust: An Elysian Tale | =================== ^ = Mouse & Keyboard are STRONGLY advised. * = Very raw indie or contains some jank or lack of polish. ---------------------------------
