At the time of this review, A Merchant's Promise has become one of my favorites and here's why:
1. Aesthetic - The feeling you get, walking near Ivernox, summer night with stars raining in the sky above with a cart full of goods by the colorful shimmering rivers on your way to become filthy rich.. or sitting in your cottage with an ale, warm stew on the fire and the glow from flame knowing you're the King's Merchant, gives you a cozy feeling that's hard to beat!
2. Gameplay - Being physics based, it's bound to have imperfections, and frustrations. But here, the few that are present rarely become an issue that prevents progress or hinder time spent. For being early access, the love put in the movement, and function of the crates and items really show. Fair warning, this game can be pretty slow and repetitive going back and forth constantly, and really urge the dev to implement increased run speed (Even at the risk of cargo mishaps) or usable tonics/homemade meals for a buff. But either way, being able to choose your goods, where and when to sell without time windows or a need to calculate is nice.
3. Future Plans - Following the dev on most platforms, the things planned are going to make this experience so much better, and immersive. Cart upgrades, map changes and so much more are in store, and I can't wait to see! I am most excited for the teased wind physics, and i'd love to trade more items and buy things! There's also campsites in between the towns that will really be a game changer for those who dislike nighttime! Overall, A Merchant's Promise is an engaging, relaxing economy game with pleasing visuals, intuitive controls and lot's of potential!

Spent my life savings on a wagon of fish. Wagon broke half way through the next town. Now I live under the stalls in the harbor. 10/10 would go homeless again.

Big fan of selling snake oil at a 200% markup. Not a big fan of the hooligans highway robbers who call themselves "the king's ta collectors".

Let me know if a patch has rectified these issues.
1. Owned house doors can softlock you because you can't manipulate them, but you can use objects to close them with yourself inside of them.
2. Please let me pull my cart up the ramp to the village market placed over the river.
3. The lantern and light sources don't illuminate enough to a point that even with them, navigating at night is still insanely difficult, I'd like a 2nd and 3rd area of illumination near all light sources of decreased strength depending on light generation layer.
4. I wanna sleep under my cart to pass half the night at a massive but workable penalty. I'm thinking of a "bad sleep" debuff that eventually disappears, but it'll reduce movement speed or increase stamina drain for maybe... an hour of in-game time (as in the 24-hour cycle type of time).
Cool game, needs a lot of work but it'll be great once it's there.

I really want to like this game as this screams something I should be into but it just feels lacking in some key areas
Positives:
-Art while not done will result in a pretty wonderful looking game although the npcs are a little demonic looking I expect that all to be fleshed out with time.
-Mechanics are pretty solid though an option to lock myself to the orientation of the cart may be a nice touch its very intuitive once you get past the currency system
-The game seems like it's being consistently updated which gives me a lot of hope for the future of this game
Negatives:
-The environment at the moment feels very empty for a game that is essentially a walking simulator. Though I was unable to get very far in 2 hours I feel like starting the player in possibly one of the most unattractive areas is a turn off. I could see it being interesting to enter this area after some game play but it definitely hides the nicer areas behind most players 2 hour trial which feels like a missed opportunity to hook new players in.
-The AI as I mentioned earlier are very... well AI. They don't make the world feel lived in at all and are very jarring to look at and interact with. I feel like aesthetic is extremely important in a game like this and even if they had a bit more life to them it would make towns feel a little more unique. They also tend to do very strange things that take you out of the experience like running up and down sheer cliffs and getting stuck standing somewhere random or getting stuck on the cart
-Lack of auto save. I'm pretty sure though correct me if I'm wrong, that there is no auto save feature and and the game seems to be a little temperamental especially on the beta branch and has reset my progress twice to the start due to crashes. Again I'm not 100% sure that it isn't in the game but if it isn't it seriously needs to be considered as even something as basic as saving whenever you enter a new town would help a lot
I plan to keep this game and not refund it as I truly believe that with some polish this game will become something truly unique and relaxing to experience. Would I recommend it in it's current state however? No even though it's priced quite low it still just needs more. In a few months I see this review becoming positive but we will wait and see

If you like trading and are willing to wait for more content to be added, then this may be the game for you.
Overall I enjoy the game. I like building up my wealth slowly to afford more goods to trade and exploring to see if there is anything of value I can find.
The only, not flaws but considerations, I will leave for the developer is as of right now, the game is a little too simple. The survival elements of hunger and thirst are not an issue at all: you can live off of foraged mushrooms and never need to buy food and you can keep drinking clean water when you come across it and never need to buy a drink. It would be great for the economy to be more fleshed out with maybe random events that affect it in positive and negative ways, to include more goods to trade and just overall expand on the world with meaningful npcs, locations and quests.
However, most of the considerations I said above are features that the developer is working on so again, it’s a good game, not a lot of content right now, a little too easy but I think it has great potential.
