This game has some good things about it, but it has enough issues that I can't recommend it in its current state.
The issues as I see them:
- when you launch the game, it asks for some permissions that other similar games do not ask for. It's probably nothing sketch but it had some sketch vibes so I disabled those permissions.
- The dialogue at the beginning of the game has a very odd hidden timer that doesn't allow you to skip until after a certain (seemingly random) number of seconds. The protagonist does not have a voice actor and I read quickly. So sometimes I was trying to hit the skip button but there was a several second period of time where I could not skip to the next line.
- The sound design has a lot of reused sound effects. For example, the police cars that are in the first outdoor scene all play the same broken siren sound effect. This is distracting and the repetitive nature of it is somewhat annoying. Also, some sound effects (like a barking dog, creatures growling etc) are attached to points in space or on objects. In my opinion, sometimes these draw you away from what you're supposed to be focusing on. I suggest that the barking dog at the beginning stops barking if you walk towards the sound so it's clear you aren't supposed to look for the dog.
- enemies tend to spawn in pairs: one ahead of you and one behind. It's very tricky to not get hit by at least one enemy when you're ambushed unless you are reloading from a checkpoint and already know what the ambush formation will be.
- when you die and load a checkpoint, it's not really clear what progress is saved and what is not. I died after finding a key and like three artifacts and I wasn't sure if I needed to go look for those artifacts again or if I kept them in my inventory somehow. There needs to be some feedback that lets the player know how far back they've been loaded to. Either that or make the checkpoint visually obvious.
- when you get hurt in this game, there is no directional indicator that I noticed for where you got hit from. Sometimes I would die because I could hear an enemy, but I couldn't see what was hitting me and didn't know where to turn. Generally speaking, the feedback for getting hit is pretty weak all together. There is also no other indication that you've been hurt other than the health bar.
-the overall feel of the game is a lot like the old horror mods for halflife. It is very amateurish and shows some disregard for user experience. I think the dev should take the lessons from this project and try a smaller, more focused experience at a higher quality. With focus on player experience. A few player tests could have brought most of the major issues with this game to light.
