Unfortunately, I don't think I can recommend The Witch based on my playthrough. Pros: Looks and runs quite well on Steamdeck, with some adjustment to resolution, graphics quality and sensitivity (though some fonts remain hard to read); atmospheric, interesting locations; a couple of effective jumpscares; story was just about intriguing enough for me to feel invested in getting to the end. Cons: Incredibly difficult to see anything by the torch's tiny beam, particularly when navigating tight spaces; lack of meaningful events at each checkpoint (it really just felt like I was carrying items from point A to point B, without much happening in between); dialogue loops that overwrite each other and give misleading guidance; no real puzzles or challenges (just finding items etc); awkward item targetting, which can end up selecting items behind you instead of the thing you're looking at; confusing plot events and conclusion. My overriding feeling is that the game felt uneventful and underwhelming: I spent most of it waiting to see more of the titular Witch, but then it ended, and I'm really not sure what her part in the whole story was meant to be. I'm not sure if the game is intended to have multiple endings (if it is, I don't know what would trigger them), but the ending I experienced felt like a disappointing anti-climax. It definitely shows some promise - the atmosphere and settings are quite good, despite a lot of invisible walls etc - and I'd be interested to see more from this developer in the future. I think approaching The Witch with tempered expectations - and taking advantage of a sale - might be the best way to experience it.

I really enjoyed this game! It gives you a sense of freedom walking around the village, which actually looks like an entire village, rather than just a collection of random houses. It looks like the devs put a lot of effort into it, taking care of every art detail. You can even find disturbing things in the houses, which just adds to the story and to the immersion, along with the sound effects and the music, which are well incorporated. The jumpscares are pretty decent, not too many but well placed, just to catch you off guard when you're least prepared. I also have some negative remarks: it's weird how you can't access some of the porches and where there's a door wide open it says it's locked. Also there could be more puzzles to make it more challenging, but maybe that's just a personal preference. Aside from this, I didn't find any bugs and the game runs smoothie. I think it has a lot of potential to evolve into a larger game, both in terms of the story and the world it’s set in. I highly recommend it!
