Heckin fun shooting up aliens, live the childhood you never had in this arcade shooter where you wish the US made more nukes. It still needs some work to allow for the player to have a bit more build dynamism and probably optimizations to the performance but it is a really fun snappy thing of a game.

Simple, effective and fun. Well worth what it costs. It would be a great game in an arcade!

This is a clinic in video game design. - Take an existing retro game idea and make it better. I grew up with Atari and this really should have been the true sequel to Missile Command. - Streamline the controls. The original Missile Command had one trackball and three buttons. This uses a mouse and one button. Simple to control, yet difficult to master. - Select retro style graphics for a retro game. The choice to use vector style graphics for this game was a great choice. Atari selecting vector graphics for it’s Centipede Recharged game seemed like a poor choice for a wonderfully colorful original pixel game. It lost the feeling of the original game right out the gate. The graphics for this game keeps the simple feel and gives the correct retro vibe. Now yes, the original Missile Command was a pixel game, but the vector enhances the game playability and overall vibe on a number of cool levels. - Make it addictive. The upgrade system, the mini bosses, the defense system, it builds tension and still gives you the tools to keep going. Give Pixeljam credit for a great game. Keep up the good work and I look forward to what else this team comes up with.

Its rare that i stand at an impasse with a game purely because of its mechanics, in spite of the fact that said mechanics aren't "bad" per say, but instead just directly against my personal preference. I picked up the game, ultimately knowing I'd probably not like it. It looks and sounds gorgeous, the moment to moment gameplay is excellent. But, I just cannot for the life of me, be made to give a shit about score attack. For a rough overview of what one is getting into by buying, Utopia must fall is a psychedelic Adrenalin fueled nightmare version of the classic missile command, juiced up on all of the rougelike drugs imaginable. (Other than deck building, thank fuck.) And exists firmly in the space of a generally short 15-20 minute run experience wherein you will either die immediately, die slowly, or rarely strike your godrun, purely down to luck. To which your main influence on the game is striking increasingly ridiculous scores through a carefully arranged labyrinth of bonus rules to overcome the fact your upgrades are always getting more expensive faster than you will be receiving more score by killing enemies. The Shooting is excellent, and while many of the upgrades were a bit bland, updates seem to quickly be resolving that issue. If your apart of a minority who can really enjoy a score attack experience, then despite the color of this review. You should get Utopia Must Fall. For 7$, its really just 'missile command but a rougelike' and it does just that. If the prospect of score attack doesn't immediately interest you though, as it didn't for me. Don't. Because it is all the game has for you. If you cannot get into 'kill 20 enemies without missing a shot' or 'kill a cloaked enemy on a Tuesday at midnight while cloaked' Then you will not be getting further than a few minutes into each run without excellent aim and a willingness to grind it out. There is no metaprogression, and all of the games content is per-run. So there is zero reason to grind it out as described unless your enjoying it. My one plea, in the case of being seen in the crowd. I really want to love this game. But please for the life of me, Give me a game mode other than score. I don't care if the balance sucks. I just want to see the big things explode without ramming my head against a wall for a few hours.

Retro vector goodness in executed with impeccable Datassette style and sophistication. Missile Command -flavored delightful mixture of deceptively simple "keep your build ahead of the curve" shoot 'em up gameplay. Highly recommended!

Game is good so far but there's one major issue I have Theres pretty much no progression other than memorizing what each enemy does. Doesn't matter if ur 1 hour in or 1000 hours, u still have the same setup. Usually with roguelikes theres some sort of permanent upgrade system for future runs or maybe an unlockable skill, but not here. Each time u play, ur main mindset is more like, "Lets see if i get luckier this time" Although, id still recommend it. The full game isnt released yet, the visuals are amazing, its addicting, and theres a pretty good foundation. I just hope permanent upgrades or some sort of metaprogression becomes a thing later on.

Great game to boot up when you’ve got nothing to do or if you’re committed to indie titles, it’s simple gameplay that you can pour hours into

It's a good game to kill 15 minutes here and there, but the difficulty curve is not well balanced. I can get to 300k points most times I play, but after about 40 game "days" your weapons are totally inadequate for the amount of incoming aliens. The weapon upgrades are boring and seem to be arbitrarily limited for no clear reason. The "Berserk" and "Hermit" game modes are interesting but only serve to make the game even more difficult without making it more fun. Looks lovely and the sound design is good and not distracting. I think the devs have given up trying to balance the gameplay though. 3/5 stars for me. A resounding "Meh!"

I picked this game up because NOVA DRIFT released a steam announcement down the line and was like "Oh yeah there's this game that I like called UTOPIA MUST FALL you should check it out or something idk" (not the exact words), and yeah. I was hooked. Immediately. I feel like this game was made for me. It's a kind of game I *like* and I can't explain why. Anyway, it's not a long game, nor do you make progress between runs. it is a Roguelike. Most runs don't last long, and I'm enjoying it as a timewaster. Sometimes it's nice to just have a game I boot up and play for a bit when I don't know what to do. It's a pretty neat looking game. Surprisingly, everything feels rather clear. I kinda know what everything is going to do at a glance, once I've seen an enemy before. There's like, three "Playstyles"? Three major upgrade routes, two of those are secret. You'll figure it out, I'm sure (check the challenge guide if you want it spelt out), I don't think there's an upgrade that feels useless either? It's all pretty good, there's just things you need NOW and things you can have LATER. Keep in mind, there's no winning as far as I must know. My longest run so far is about day 36, sitting at around 861,641 score. I ran down to my final 9 tactical missiles, and then that bastard Purple Nullifier Rift That I Hate appeared and single handedly handicapped me so hard it killed the run. I nod, knowing it was a good run. This part of the 'review' is the nerd shit I like to do. It's not a needed read, since all you really need to know is "Short, fun, it wasn't designed for you to win. Utopia Must Fall. Nice sound design, nice music that's fitting. Nice aesthetics. Do you like a good time waster and wanna kill some time now and then? You can do a lot worse. That being said, there's a few things that could do with some tweaking. Some enemy squadrons immediately kill runs based on build or RNG, those little spinny projectiles that cna't be destroyed with coilgun rounds? Hate those things, though I understand their purpose, without nuclear missiles you're locked with some randomness whether or not you can deal with them. Most of my runs die because of those things. Still a good game though." But! if you do like nerd shit, and enjoy people thinking waaaay too deep about games, I hope you enjoy! My FAVOURITE thing about this game? It's the tone. I was expecting some arcady music, something high octane or something. What I got was... Actually a very quiet soundtrack, and a game that, in my opinion, does a fantastic job at conveying scale and desperation with so little. It starts, showing you a landmark you'll recognise, and the name of a city. Then it zooms out, you see vehicles flying around in the sky, floating past said landmark, then you see the structures in the background. Structures that dwarf the landmarks we know so well. ANd then structures that dwarf *those* structures. And then you see the cannon. The cannon looks, small, compared to the city. I wonder how big it must be compared to your average person. Or, hell, the landmark in the city. It makes a constant, distant echo as it fires. You land a few coil-rounds in a hostile ship passing by, a faint explosion. Currently, the gun is only firing about 600 RPM. The first waves aren't too bad, just a few asteroid chunks here and there. Some formation fighters. A centipede or two. You survive the first day, "APOCALYPSE AVERTED!" the game informs you. You get your first upgrade, buying EMERGENCY STOCKPILE - three nuclear warheads from an international arms market. The screen zooms out a little. More invaders show up. The days keep passing. You get multiple upgrades from performing well. Your coilgun fires an extra 300, 600, more rounds. Maybe your shield fires off extremely dangerous electric arcs at nearby enemies or hostile projectiles. Perhaps your city is producing one nuke every 2 days. Or one every day, maybe two. Maybe you have a watch tower or two sitting outside the city, providing covering fire to keep the city safe. The first week passes. The screen has zoomed out a lot by now. You go to buy a stockpile, you can't. The option is greyed out. "Unavailable. The International Arms Markets have been destroyed." That's when my favourite track plays, "Re-Evaluate Your Priorities." How many cities are still standing, I wonder? Is this the only one thats left? I mentioned the distant, echoing sounds of the coil-cannon. Your second week, by now it's probably firing 1,200 RPM from multiple barrels. maybe it's firing over 2000, modified to fire Cobalt projectiles. Did you ever wonder how loud it must be, down there? To hear that thing firing, for minutes on end? Days? Weeks? Months? You've lost a few runs by now, you're better. You're in your third week. The music shifts again. "APOCALYPSE ADVERTED" Displays a different message. Was it meant to be like this? It's going to be okay. By now, the enemy waves are relentless. Tough. You'll barely be scraping by - even with your management of nuclear warheads. if you have them at all. You accepted a long time ago that Quantity is far better to Quality, your nuclear warheads were downsized some time ago - a trade off you had to accept. You're making two per day, and it doesn't feel like enough. Four weeks in, or more. I was making four per day, downsized to the (relatively) small explosion size of most enemy projectiles. At this point, it's a glorified "Desperate Attempt to Parry enemy projectiles to set off a chain reaction." Four upgraded watch towers sit around my city, lighting up the skies above with laser fire and nuclear explosions from destroyed enemy munitions. An explosion grazes the top of the city. I lose a few million from the already dwindled population, I sit at about 16,000,000 from the original 70,000,000. Just a few days ago, a rift absorbed enough nuclear energy to spawn a bunch of space-anenome that ate tens of millions of citizens within seconds. It took me about 10 missiles back to back to clear that group in a panic. But the day is cleared. I see the upgrade screen, nothing left. Just citizens proposals. I write them off, as always. I laugh, seeing the last upgrade presented to me. I just want to tell you good luck, we're all counting on you. The music changed again. The game and I have an understanding. It was a long, arduous struggle. But Utopia Must Fall.
