This is one of those times where a game you buy cheap on an impulse ends up surprising you. I went in fully expecting a quick, kinky furry visual novel with a gorgeous protogen girl and, to be fair, that's exactly what I go. What I didn't expect was an emotionally compelling story about the struggles of life after tragedy. Visual novels live and die by their stories, and that's one aspect in which My Protogen Engineer shines. The way the story was handled, paced and concluded was incredibly satisfying through and through, and manages to make me genuinely care about these two characters and their fates. It's a story with real questions about what you owe the people in your life when you're faced insurmountable struggles, and what you're willing to risk to live the kind of life you want. I won't lie, the ending got me much more emotional than I was anticipating. Even the adult scenes are neatly interwoven into the game's narrative and don't feel out of place fanservice, which is a difficult trick to pull off. Aside from a few typos, there's nothing to complain about here. Its story length clocks in at about two hours, and never feels like it's overstaying its welcome. The character art for Xena is superb; she has a fascinating character design that's fun to look at, so it's great to see her various outfits and moods throughout the game, and the CG scenes are also handled marvelously. That said, there are frequent mentions of other characters in the story that don't appear on screen, which hinders some of the immersion a bit. But I think a bigger sticking point is the background art; too often, they don't meet each other's styles, and it makes me assume that they're AI-generated. If I could give one recommendation to the developers: it would be great if you included an option to disable the adult content at will. Having the patch in your library makes it difficult if you want to stream the game on Twitch later on, and as of writing, there's no way to toggle the adult content on or off. But aside from that: if you want a solid, emotional story about life with a gorgeous protogen girl, then I gladly recommend this one.

The story was very well written, and the art style is as usual, beautiful. But please tell me the cliffhanger wasn't for nothing. I NEED some sort of closure. I hope we find some solace in My Furry Protogen 3. Even if it was like a split-second glimpse or something. ANYTHING! PLEASE! DON'T LEAVE ME HERE MICHAEL! MIIIICHAAEEELLL!!
