The Forever Winter feels like the definition of a passion project and one i can highly recommend at this point. It is a third-person PvE extraction shooter that can also be played in co-op. The setting is a grimdark nightmare future where humanity is trapped in a never-ending, pointless war. It’s dark, gritty and is one of the most incredible looking games I’ve ever played. You play a scavenger who is stuck on the frontlines between three military superpowers. You are not on anyone's side and the armies could not care less about. Your job is to dart between their battles, scavenge for supplies, finish quests and hopefully make it back out alive. With recent updates they have made real steps in optimizing the game and fixing a lot of issues the community had. Gunplay feels solid now and the real time water system is gone. Very much looking forward to seeing where this game ends up.

I have followed this game since it launched in "Very Early Access". It had its flaws with the water system, among other things, but these developers have consistently put out updates and fixed things quickly. And that can't be ignored, so I finally purchased this game on sale, and I'm surprised I like it even more than I expected! The market for PVE extractions is almost non-existent, and the atmosphere of this game was the selling point for me. There are a few characters to play as, and if I were to explain what this game is about. I'd say you are a nobody in a war-torn world. Your job is to loot, extract and not engage with enemies that will obliterate you. Keep in mind, this game still has a long way to go and still has issues, but I had to support these Devs. 8/10

Half baked, still needs time in the oven, to be honest I can see the potential and the dream, it just needs alot of work before it can get there. I truly hope that Fun Dog can do it, however until then I do not recommend the game to anyone.

A good intro to extraction shooters - and a even better game. Remember, you are not him. Youre an idiot trying to get a dram of that liquid good stuff

TLDR: Cautious yes recommendation, only if you're willing to look past a lot of jank and maybe performance issues. ye its still very janky, after coming back to it after a long break from the start the game HAS improved, coop is slightly more stable, but overall still barely playable with how often shit just bugs out. IF you're willing to look past that, and that's a big IF for a lot of people, this game has unmatched atmosphere and immersion. Solo is fairly stable and the latest june update allowed me to go from 45-50 fps at 60% render scale to 80-90 fps at 80% render scale, so they are working on it. If you run an AMD card I'd highly recommend looking into optiscaler, I was able to swap out the DLSS for FSR 3 (FSR 4 is available if your card can run it), and now with FSR framegen + FSR 3 at 80% render scale I'm running a solid 120-140 fps in every map i've tried.

Every Review complaining about how early it feels is correct the game is still super early access with tons missing. HOWEVER! The company put the game out game early due to player pressure and well it feels very alpha. However the bones are fun the style is dripping and the devs listen to the players and pump out updates to improve the game. I'm giving it a recommend because i think people should give the game a crack and help a great new dev team do their art and make a unique game that is not AAA slop. Fundog has my vote my investment and my best wishes to create a fantastic scav game. If you want more devs to take risks and make unique games its also up to the player base to help support such endeavours. Happy scavenging!

Let me start right away with, this is definitely NOT a game for everyone. This game is punishing, clunky, and brutal. When I first played the demo I was so disheartened after following the development of this game for a while. However, I recently gave it a second shake and something clicked. This is exactly what I'm looking for in an extraction shooter: PvE only, gorgeous anesthetics, and something challenging. Sure, there will be times the game is blatantly unfair, like getting stuck on bad geometry or overly aggressive stun-locking. But most times I find myself dying because it was very clearly my mistake. If I take my time, plan out engagements, and be aware, missions go very smoothly. A lot of the early mechanics the fandom hated like water going out based on real time (its now a currency for entering different locations and more advantageous spawn points). These devs seem to be in touch with the community from what I've seen and I feel very comfortable supporting them financially. Making a skin pack for an early access game is making me hesitant but it it helps fund the development and the devs keep making good QOL improvements and expansions to the game like they have been then I have no complaints. Tldr: if you want a challenging extraction shooter with immaculate vibes, no garbage PvP, and can tolerate some early access jank. Give this a shot. It has a demo so why not? And if you dont jive with it come back after a little while with fresh eyes like I did and it may just click!

I wouldn't recommend this game unless you have a really beefy rig. The devs did not want to release the game this early, but did so at their community's request. It's quite janky, but it's to be expected. Came back after a few months of patches and it's just nuking my B580; 99% utilization with everything besides texture quality on low at 1080p. It's in rough shape, but shows promise, I look forward to the road to a full release. Review will be updated as progress is made.

The reviews are more entertaining than the game. Some who praise it to the skies, while all those who attack it are just whining. I guess I'm one of the crybabies. I bought the game when it was released in early access. The atmosphere is good. My first experiences were joining and dying, and trying things out until I figured out that you shouldn't fight every enemy and that you generally don't have enough ammo. What I do remember were the following things that bothered me at the start: - Connection problems. Sometimes you couldn't join friends either. Only A could join B, but B couldn't A. - Some missions could only be completed by the lobby host. - Many missions couldn't be completed because there was no content for them, or at least the spawn rate was so unrealistic that it became irrelevant. - Water had to be collected and expires every day. Completely unnecessary mechanic. - Useless items - Weapon upgrades, for example - Weapons that could be extracted damaged but not repaired - Crafting was limited to 2 or 3 possible ammunition types, I think only pistols - Enemies simply spawn next to you or you stand in a spawning group Basically, the game offered too little variety and too little incentive for me to continue playing. A friend asked me if I'd play another round. My conclusion now: New insight: - Connection problems. I can't comment on that. It felt smoother, though, but... - Textures that re-render. It's more the rule than the exception that you can see the bar or weapon but not the body of the player characters. - Some missions could only be completed by the lobby host: seems to be fixed - Many missions couldn't be completed because the content wasn't available, or at least the spawn rate was so unrealistic that it became irrelevant... still exists - Water mechanics have been changed and are now used as spawn point currency. It's OK, not great, but better than before. - Useless items - seems to be fixed - Weapons that could be extracted damaged but not repaired - can now be repaired - Crafting was limited to 2 or 3 possible ammunition types, I think only pistols - there are 2 recipes, and both craft the same pistol ammunition. So de facto useless - Enemies simply spawn next to you or you're standing in a spawning group - still exists There are new game-breaking bugs, however... - Team members can't be seen, so they can't be revived. We had a round where the team leader could see everyone, and everyone else could only see one or two other team members. - If two people loot the same item, the second one gets stuck. They now have to be killed and picked up to be released from the loot animation. However, friendly fire now results in a deduction in scavenger reputation, so you're punished for helping someone. Cool. In conclusion, I'm honestly disappointed. They advertised a closeness to players and that they cater to requests. At least with water, that's the impression I get. But since they were able to release a DLC that you have to buy, with skins that are also buggy and don't display, I don't think this is a good direction. After more than 6 months, there are more bugs than fewer, but they're opening up a new source of income...
