Old School Rally - is everything I wanted it to be.
A perfect mix of "Colin McRae Rally 2.0" and "Sega Rally Revo" that I used to play for hours on PS1 and PSP respectively. This game is defenitely on more arcadey side so hardcore racing sim fans might not like it. But I really love it and recommend you to give it a try. I was driving through Finland on a Rally Group S car. When my co-driver said "Jump", I pushed the pedal to the floor and braced myself. For a moment I thought I can touch the sky. For a moment I was truly happy.

Honestly a very fun game, it's got a banging soundtrack, well designed tracks*, cool visuals, and a large (and growing) collection of legally distinct classic cars that all handle uniquely. *apart from china which makes me want to tear my hair out

Suuuuper nostalgic rally racing. Graphics are reminiscent of PS1 era racing games (obviously) and the track design & backgrounds feel so familiar while remaining fresh. Very arcade-like feel to the handling with enough variation between the 30+ cars, 20+ tracks, and different weather/time conditions to make for a ton of replayability. I typically find it difficult to get immersed in an indie racer, but even at less than two hours played I can already tell this is a game I'll be playing through until everything's unlocked and I've beaten every race. Soundtrack kicks ass, too. The only thing that could be improved upon--ever so slightly--are the callouts. Occasionally you'll get an "Easy Left" after you've built speed by nailing the previous corners, and it turns out that left isn't so easy after all. That said, anticipating when an "Easy Left" won't actually be so easy becomes intuitive after an hour or so of play because the physics and handling are so consistent. This isn't a complaint so much as it is an observation, it really doesn't detract from the overall experience, just adds a layer of complexity mainly when you first start playing. 10/10 game, it's worth every penny regardless of whether it's on sale.

Overall, I am really enjoying the game. Cars feel good to drive and aesthetics are great. I finished all the content and I still keep coming back every now and then to do some rallies just for the fun of it. However, game does feel a bit lonely. Having the ability to race against CPU helps, but they have no collision so it's just not the same. No currency for unlocks can be gained by doing it either which does not help. Getting few lap tracks with the ability to race against multiple CPU opponents would go a long way. I'm looking forward to more content during the EA period (and hopefully afterwards too).

Dude... everything about the gravity and physics of the car confuses me. every car handles like a boat (the celica does not have this issue, i am very fond of this car) but everything else is sick though so thats good k thats all, Peas

It’s a really cool concept and I love the retro graphics but the driving physics are a little too arcade like and it gets boring after a bit. There isn’t much of a progression system either so it’s not as rewarding as other race games. It would be cool if the devs implemented more modern features like upgrades and tuning or more tracks.

Full video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YHGr3I51mQ Old School Rally absolutely nails the retro PS1 rally aesthetic and delivers satisfying, challenging handling once you get used to it. The presentation is gorgeous, the vibes are great, soundtrack is beautiful and the core gameplay loop is rewarding. Perfect for fans of TOCA and Colin McRae. However, the game is currently held back by repetitive grind, limited progression systems, and missing features like car tuning, varied weather conditions and functional collision or rival mechanics. PVE offers little incentive, time trial offers nothing but your own determination to beat your ghost and sound variety between cars is lacking. Still, the dev clearly has a vision, and what's here is already a solid foundation. If you're into 90s racers and don’t mind early access missing features, this is one worth it

TLDR a bottom Hey, i brought this without reading a single review nor doing any research on YouTube so a completely blind introduction to this one i had this game on my wish list for a while, and finally brought it at 15% off - i also managed to nick my roomates wired XBOX 360 controller, to make t even more immersive to days of old... however - after being fascinated by the cool music nostalgic graphics and the car selection i started my first race, the physics are very arcade and acceleration was extreme but mainly the worst thing was the call outs.. no number system just.. Hard left Easy right Jump and that wouldn't be a problem f they were called out before the corner, found myself dong 100mph and t would say Hairpin right and before he even finished the call out, was off the cliff or in the ditch, very frustrating and even with all the accidents along any stage - i never lost or failed to beat the time needed, so the difficulty s for a 7 year old with basic interest n racing lines, chasing times and understanding of how smooth is fast another thing is after i explored the settings menu - theirs custom keybindings for keyboard, but not controller some how, my main car games have always been forza and i always set the buttons up to be the same as forza,. but had to deal with the bumpers being gears witch was not pleasing... lastly, was the replays being broken with no sound - and a side note, theirs no music in races, i know its not what you want.. but it should be a setting because t was a banger sound track TLDR - Goods: really nostalgic graphics 10/10 Banger sound track 8/10 Awesome legends for cars 7/10 (could be more of them) Bads: Driving Physics are too arcade focused and boring after 5 minutes Co Driver does not understand you need to prepare for the next call and is way too late with the physics the cars feel light and easy to drive however, after a jump theirs no scene of the word grip even after you land the cars all drive the same even with RWD or AWD im board to death after 30 minutes Has potential to rival some of the legends from 20+ years ago, but quite far off right now, im not asking for Dirt Rally with 2003 Graphics, but something more than.. This Thank you for reading, not recommended for now - just get an emulator

This is a dope ass game to be totally honest. I heard about it because of the DMCA trouble the game got into. I was happy to see it come back so quickly, and they put it on sale for 15% off so I figured I'd throw my dollars into the ring and see what I got. I knew I was going to get something that is heavily inspired by the V-Rally and WRC series from the PS1, but what I didn't expect was how fun it'd actually be. The handling model is incredibly fun and allows the player the freedom to drive the cars in the game how they see fit. Vehicles feel all distinct from one another just enough where they're all viable options but come with their own quirks which is how a racing game should be. The sense of speed is great. The rush you get after hitting a turn so perfectly that you don't lose any momentum is super satisfying. I just really, really like this game and I hope to see it grow much bigger. So far, there's a limited number of tracks so the content does repeat itself quite a bit, but it more than makes up for it with the vehicle selection which features icons and styles from the 90s and early 2000s that people my age all grew up with. Hopefully we'll see more tracks added to the game, but what's on offer is really worth it for the current price. My only recommendation to the dev is to perhaps add ranks to the course timers during the career mode. The required time is so lenient if you're good at racing games. Finishing tracks with 40 seconds to spare is a nice ego boost, but outside of the leaderboard in the Time Trial mode there isn't much incentive to improve your time. I'd love to see something like Trackmania's medal system where they have a bronze, silver, gold, and "author" time.

Old School Rally is developed by Frozen Lake Games and released in 2024 in early access. Remember the last century? Those were the good old days! What a joy to see that talented developers, nostalgic for that golden era, had the brilliant idea to create a rally game worthy of the classics of yesteryear, like Colin McRae, V-Rally, Sega Rally, or International Rally Championship. The retro vibe is beautifully captured, truly making you feel like you’re back in the ‘90s. The delightfully retro, pixelated, and polygonal graphics are a feast for the eyes, and for me, they’re an absolute treat. Add to that a killer soundtrack blending rock, drum & bass, and synthwave that makes the game even cooler. But let’s get to the heart of it: the racing, obviously. Fans of winding roads and adrenaline-pumping thrills, rejoice! The driving feel is super fun, ultra-arcade, and easy to pick up. No overcomplicating things: just pure, simple pleasure. Each comes in a version very close to their iconic liveries, but with fictional sponsors and names. Some cars are unlocked as you progress through the Rally mode, while others must be purchased with winnings from your victories. You can even customize each car’s livery to your heart’s content thanks to the Steam Workshop! Trust me, you’ll see the world from behind the wheel of these souped-up beasts. Nothing beats a high-speed global tour to get the full experience. You’ll race through Australia, Sweden, Arizona, the UK, China, Finland, Japan, Kenya, Germany, and Greece at breakneck speed! With so many locations come wildly different environments, weather, and tracks. You’ll tackle dirt paths, gravel trails, snowy roads, and smooth asphalt under clear skies, fog, rain, day, or night… Old School Rally offers several game modes to keep you busy for hours. Let’s start with Rally Mode, which is essentially the game’s career mode. You’ll take on various competitions, each featuring a selection of stages to complete within a time limit, often rewarding you with cash and a bonus car. Every two races, you can clean and repair your car if it’s taken a beating. Be warned: damage isn’t just cosmetic: it affects your car’s performance and handling! The Daily Challenge, as the name suggests, is a unique race you can tackle each day on a set track, but with the car of your choice. Complete it, and you’ll pocket $1,000 to save up for future purchases while awaiting the next day’s challenge. Time Trial Mode lets you try to beat your own times on specific stages or compete against other players’ times if you’re feeling competitive. Finally, Versus Mode pits you against an AI opponent or another player locally on the track of your choice. A nice little touch: there’s a Collection menu where every car you own is displayed as a miniature model on a shelf. You can customize the room to your liking, from the shelf’s color to the wallpaper and surrounding decor. I can honestly say it’s been ages since I had this much fun with a rally game. If you’re hesitating about buying it… don’t! Just go for it! This is a game I’d recommend to everyone, from newcomers to the genre to seasoned drivers.
