Why do you love me?
For Valentine's Day, I wanted to put something on my YouTube channel and IG page (subsequently here and FB).
At first I wanted something Valentine-y, maybe even slightly cringey. I ended up purchasing some puzzle games that fit the bill but, I wasn’t convinced. Mid edit of one of the videos, I just wasn't feeling it. So... idea scrapped.
Next, I toyed with the idea of a video showcasing 3 short to bite-sized (30mins or ess) games about love. All 3 showing different ways of "love". The second game I picked, I hadn't played before and knew very little of. I recorded the one I knew first, then the one I didn't second. After playing/recording it, I loved it. Then I realized, I couldn't find a good spot for it. I thought "If I put it first or second, its message might get lost by the third video. If I put it last, it may be underappreciated, given that it's bitesize and the other two are slightly more emotion heavy. I really didn't want this one to get lost. So, I decided to give it its own spot and here we are.
the fairy tale kind but real, imperfect love. In this short experience, you'll go through 5 short "moments" or stories in these character's love journey. Blue and Pink I'll call them. The way the stories are told is through their individual perspectives, not through a narrator's pov but instead, the thoughts, feelings, doubts, frustrations etc. of Blue and Pink.
I bought this title almost a year ago, mostly because it was inexpensive, and it was on one of my curator acquaintance's Wishlist. So, I bought it for them and for myself. I thought to myself "If they added it to their Wishlist, it might be worth the try". Then I didn't touch it until Thursday, day before Valentine's. All because I did a search for titles with "love" as a tag.
I loved it. It felt relatable. It felt real, not made up, hallmark movie script. Some scenes were so detailed and specific that it's hard to think they weren't taken from real life "moment". They felt like someone's memory of a moment. A developer? Friend? Family? Maybe all of the above, but it felt real. None of that Disney love. It's that personal connection with a story that makes all the difference.
I'm not going to go into detail because it's only around 12 minutes long, I would be spoiling the whole thing but expect to see an array of emotions. If you've ever been in love, liked someone, been in a relationship etc. you'll find something that feels relatable. To me, the best part is that even when things are get "dark" and… "real", it reminds us that there are always multiple perspectives in love. So, while we're here thinking it's the end of the world, the other could be seeing how, in the end of the world the other is rising above and fighting 'till the end. The important part is that it gets communicated. You may have a very supportive partner cheering you on and hadn't realized it.
There is no such thing as perfect love, but love can have its little "perfect" moments.
I hope you all check it our check the video. It's very lovely and will make you feel a little hopeful, warm and fuzzy. February 14 isn't always very kind to everyone, but you can have hidden gems like this one tucked away to remind you, what you may see as darkness others may just see it as "the light just moved slightly to the left".
Tiny side note- I saw some comments saying the game "copied" another
This one, I didn't want to ruin anything if you plan to play any of them. LoveChoice
I checked it out and I think it sounds like a different game. For one the other one plays like a dating sim, not a visual novel. Maybe the art style is similar but in no way "copied", it's chibi cute! That style is sort of a staple "cutesy-lovey" style.
The most beautiful thing about art in any platform, is the inspiration we get from other amazing artists and their projects. So, if you happen to stumble across some of that negativity, I will say: make your own decision. Check out both (or all 3 since Florence was an inspiration too!). You'll be supporting 3 indie developers and their beautiful works of love about love.
