The character building in this game is pretty deep! There are 12 classes, and you can multi-class too (later in the game). But each class also has a big list of skills you can unlock to customize the classes further. For example, you might make a warrior that is a tank or DPS... or even one that uses status effects!
Equipment plays a big role too since each piece of gear has passive bonuses for things like how often an enemy targets the character (aggro) or how often the character counter-attacks.
I also think all the areas and dungeons are pretty well designed. They can be a bit maze-like and feature lots of treasure to find. There is a nice sense of exploration here!
The difficulty is satisfying without being too taxing. Tough bosses require some strategy, but you can also shut them down with debuffs and status effects sometimes, which feels good.

I love JRPGs and picked this up along with a few other titles in the last sale.
The classes and progression are great, the class bonuses and attributes really make you think about how to best set up your party. I all ready have 3 party saves going as I was exploring different options. Keen to play this more but a great tribute to 16-bit classics while doing it's own thing.

I love this game. It's kind of NES Final Fantasy meets Dark Souls.
It's NES Final Fantasy in the way that you select your characters at the beginning, and then just take off on an adventure. It's Soulslike in the way that adventure is delivered, albeit this game is a little more linear, but there are still plenty of different directions to go in certain areas. The story is delivered in bite-sized pieces of dialogue as you encounter various NPCs along the way.
The combat system is where this game really shines, in my opinion. You'll have to just play it, get a feel for it, and give it some time. I wasn't a fan of a lot of the equipment at first, but once you get a feel for how things work and you start figuring out builds for different characters, it's really a blast.

Fantastic game. A real indie gem.
Aesthetically, it's a masterpiece. I absolutely adore the pixel art and the soundtrack is excellent.
Gameplay is good fun with a fair amount of depth. It gives you a fair challenge as you make it further.
I heartfully recommend this game to all those RPG enjoyers who love putting together a squad and minmaxing their skills and equipment. If you like dungeon crawlers or JRPG-esque games (like Crystal Project) you'll love this one.
The lore and story is buried in the depths for you to discover. Like others say, there's a bit of Dark Souls here in how little the game holds your hand.
If you do not enjoy feeling lost or enjoy a more linear RPG, maybe look elsewhere. But if you enjoy a challenge and like to take notes, this one is for you.
Just one thing I didn't enjoy: sometimes there's too many random encounters, which can be annoying if you're lost and trying to find your route to the next dungeon. I'd like a "repel" item (hopefully I didn't miss one?).
100% will buy the next RPG from this developer. This game has quite a bit to discover and is a "proper" game already, but I'd love to see this kind of work expanded further!
Played on Steam Deck, which was an excellent platform for this game. (That's also why my play hours look wrong, if you're wondering; Steam Deck doesn't record them correctly.)

Fantastic game, can corroborate a lot of other reviews highlighting the character progression, presentation, and overall tightness of the game's balancing and mechanics (a feat not to be taken lightly, considering the hallmarks of this genre still have their balancing problems.) The maps are big and interesting enough that you never quite need to map anything out, but have to keep a running mental map most of the time.
What I haven't seen other reviewers mention is its focus on environmental storytelling, which didn't click for me until well into the playthrough. It's a very gradual progression, and without spoiling anything, the pieces coming together alongside recurring NPCs mounting desperation tie the game together as more meaningful than it seems on the surface. While it wears its NES style and FF1 dungeon design on its sleeve, the biggest inspirations I felt were from Octopath Traveler, Etrian Odyssey, and FromSoft games, and perhaps rivals or even exceeds parts of these influences.
The combination of saving everywhere, an infinite-use item to return to town anytime, and a somewhat hidden item that halves the encounter rate found at about the 25% mark all help balance out some of the rougher and arguably more dated elements of the game that may scare modern players off, and (in my opinion) don't negatively affect the balance of the game.
Give it a try, Scarmonde always needs more new adventurers.

Wow. This game is extremely engaging. The gameplay kept me interested throughout, as I plotted out my party's growth and thought about how to best make use of the new weapons and equipment I discovered. The story presented is ambiguous, but extremely intriguing and the deeper and deeper I got into the Depths, the more motivated I was to see it through to the end.
Then there's the postgame, which almost immediately started throwing obstacles that felt impossible. It's a serious challenge that had me constantly changing the way I approached it's fight. Very satisfying to complete.
To top it off, the Developer added the Random Dungeon, which is an alternate game mode that does exactly what you would expect.
Such a fantastic game.

TL;DR: Scarmonde is a good dungeon crawler with some flaws that will likely determine whether you enjoy it or not.
The concept is solid - choose your party from 12 classes, delve into a giant, multi-part dungeon, and round out your builds with subclasses later in the game. The writing is OK for a game like this, although most impressive to me is that it seems like every NPC has a unique portrait, which I did not expect. Similarly, there are multiple 'overworld' areas that function as additional portions of the dungeon to trawl through, just in a different form and with more optional areas.
To be clear, I had a lot of fun building my team and taking on the various challenges of Scarmonde.
That said, you really need to take your time at the beginning to carefully craft your team make up. No joke, I would meticulously look through each class' skill list and even start considering subclass synergies for down the road. I say this because subclasses only become available probably 60-75% of the way through the game, so your initial party makeup will need to carry you to that point, at which time you can start augmenting your initial selections.
This is also important to do because not all party compositions are equally useful/viable. Now, I'm sure someone has done a nutty run with a wholly non-optimized party, and almost every class can absolutely be useful (Warrior felt like the lone exception). But if you pick a bad combination of classes at the beginning, you may have a very bad time. Challenge-running stuff like that could be fun/interesting, but for a first run it can just be a bad time.
Still, if you like dungeon crawlers that make you think about your builds, this is a pretty easy recommend, especially if a sale rolls around!

Fantastic RPG. Surprisingly deep gameplay systems, very open-ended party customization, minimal plot that tells a story without getting too much in the way. Bueno.
