From Rob Ager of Collative Learning, To the Death is a great little arena shooter? Isometric action shooter? Not sure how exactly you describe this but it's pretty fun! I hadn't played in over a month, basically since day one release, and on D1 it played okay on steam deck with some graphical weirdness but now its smooth as butter! Looks great, plays great, the arenas now have drone and mech neutral enemies that attack everyone...at least I think it attacks the bot ones. I don't have many friends for co-op but gonna buy a copy for a buddy so its not just me vs bots. for single player, its what I call a great "pick it up put it down" game. meaning if you want to just play a quick game while doing something, especially if you have a steam deck, its perfect because a match lasts just a few minutes. I've never joined a game so early in its process before I was downright flabbergasted how much better it already is after just a few patches. If you're into movies or are fans of the Red Letter Media youtube channel, highly recommend Collative Learning and Rob Ager's film analysis as its the best there is, except when it comes to music. He just doesn't get some music but thats okay lol

8.5 / 10 (early access) GOODS --- Quite a challenge on Single Player (I’ve beaten only three levels on Nightmare Mode, and they were quite tough). And when the game is at its best, it’s really fast paced and frenetic like with the best DOOM levels. --- Lots of good unusual weapons, the top down third person perspective allows these weapons to be used more strategically than a FPS game would. And having hoverboards that hook up with tank like objects is pretty cool. --- Area layout randomisation, which adds a lot to replay value and adds to the challenge. And there is a variety of level design, some areas emphasise on verticality, and some are grounded spatial maps. --- Marvellous electronica soundtrack, so much better than the vast majority of modern movie and game soundtracks. And it has some good sound effects. --- Two player co-op and PvP modes are good fun. MIXED FEELINGS --- At the mo, if you are only playing for single player experience, there’s not as much content as a multiplayer experience. At the time of this review, there are only 8 levels for single player. In PVP mode, there are 17 areas. But as this game is in further development, there would be more levels. FLAWS --- A few noticeable programming issues, as you’d expect for an early access version of an indie game. And AI enemies have little issues here and there in how they are programmed (such as pathfinding). But improvements in later updates should solve that. If you enjoy games like ALIEN SWARM or the 90’s game CANNON FODDER, this game will exceed your expectations. This is excellent as indie games go (the whole game is about 90% programmed by one guy). And I do believe the game will get better as the game is kept updated in the future.

This will be a brief writeup [Updated for V1.9] Been a longtime fan of the dev Rob Ager's work in other mediums, and now games Arcade style twin-stick shooter The game is in a great place with update 1.9 I have little to say, except that if it looks interesting to you from the trailers: PLAY IT Game is fun, and has only gotten better with each update Some particular highlights to me from the most recent updates - game is starting to have fantastic visual variety and complexity, now with the randomized enemy appearances. Additionally, some of the enemies are very well animated. This game is becoming quite cool to look at - rough around the edges in places - but it's starting to have a very unique visual style all its own, that I can't say I really see anywhere else - the Alt-Fire mode on the Pistol, with the slow moving bullet that tracks your aim, allowing you to shoot around corners, is a real highlight among the weapons. Almost could be a tool for some light puzzle solving - the combat arena The Black Hole is probably the most visually interesting map, with the extreme contrast of darkness and light sources - a part of me hopes every level will get a Dark version, because it just looks that interesting Simple, intuitive, fluid, fun to pick up and play. Early access, but already fairly polished and a good value.

After playing this game for a few hrs I had to write a review as this is very fun. GAMEPLAY This game has a unique top down gameplay where you jump up obstacles and fall instead of just running. There are two game modes, you can fight other players or against robots. Fighting other players is really funny at times and it's fast. The main idea of the game is that it is local co-op which makes it great to play with friends and family (I highly recommend playing in multiplayer if possible as it's only split screen and no online play!). Plus you can it play it by yourself, which isn't as fun, but the bot arenas are quite challenging. GRAPHICS I personally don't mind the graphics, but some won't be happy with it (I care more about the gameplay). Also I have found that having really good graphics in split screen games needs a better graphics card. so they have actually done pretty well. Sometimes I see two walls glitching through each other but normally I don't even notice as I get too distracted by the battles. SOUND / MUSIC The sounds in this are great, but they're really loud! And I absolutely love the music style and hope whoever made it gets some kind of award. I'd recommend keeping your volume low as it all gets very loud, and I'm glad there are options to turn off crowd cheering or music. CONTROLS I think the controls are nice and simple unlike many other games, which makes it perfect for young kids but not so simple an adult would get bored in two seconds. I also like that it uses a controller as this would be hard to play on keyboard and mouse. WEAPONS The game has lots of choices of weapons and being able to hold two at once is handy. My personal favourites are the flamethrower, green laser rifle and the rockets, but I love them all and haven't discovered any problems with them. ENEMIES There are many types of bots to fight and they all do a great job of annoying you, especially the hovering drone! I i do love the designs and different abilities of the bots, but the game desperately needs some boss fights. ARENAS Out of the ones I've played I love the futuristic skateboards and the flashlight arenas, as they are unique, fun and very tactical. There's loads of variety in the arenas and they all look and play different. Another thing is that the levels change their design in each match, which adds more difficulty and makes them worth playing again. One downside is that sometimes you will get stuck in a crevice (basically stopping you from even finishing your match). Aside from plain graphics, this is a great game that deserves a lot more attention. The multiplayer is really good and hilarious. It can have up to four players at once, but I've only tried it in two player.
