7.5/10 - Road tripping vibes in superb pixel art
Great little game, basically a road trip simulator where you manage resources like money, fuel, food, and durability while you traverse a procedural map, with a few quests predetermined but a few others popping up as you go. Good to pick up at short bursts to pass the time, or relax after a long workday, driving across the map while listening to its very 00s-indie like soundtrack. Pixel art is pleasant, interfaces are very immersive as you pick songs in your cd player, stop at different shops, and travel though different terrain. Playability is okay, given it's a simulator - but the puzzles to solve conflicts were a bit disappointing at first and got tiring fast. The challenge of resource management is the key factor of playability, but quickly fades as you improve your car and carry it through different gameplays. It still kept me hooked for more time than I expected, always a safe and easy game to return and unwind when you don't have time for longer sittings. Getting all the endings is what normally drives you to stick along. I would recommend for a follow-up a wider scope and a deep plot to continue engaged. This formula has a lot of potential.

This may not be a game for everyone but it sure as hell was for me. The soundtrack, pixel art, atmosphere just spoke to me. Getting all the endings was a delight as well. This game made me want to go on a road trip even though I can't drive just yet.

A very enjoyable road trip sandbox game!
The premise is simple at the start. You need to cross the country to get to the festival.
Now if you get there or not, or change your destination along the way is up to you, leading to various endings.
I don't think the game is the type you should be playing in one sitting or for achievements.
It's best played in short bursts whenever you have some spare time.
Thumbs up
You're still young. You have time

Very delightful game that captures hitting the open road in one's youth. A clunky car and a case of beer packed with hitchhikers? Maybe a mechanic's dream of a fast hot rod with some off-road tires and fueling up on farmer's market honey? These choices are yours.
At the end of all the miles and endings, I had a nice time.

I really wanted to like this game because irl, driving is one of my favourite activities. But the weird combat system just feels like a slow grinding death march. There's no reward for completing encounters, you just take damage and pray you can find a random event that gives you some money or resources so you can recover. Yes your able to flee combat at any time, but that uses fuel and allows your opponent to wail on you while you turn your back. Often costing more than if you simply fought.
There also isn't much strategy to combat either, its basically a match game. Attacks come in one of four flavours, you pick the skills that match the flavour of attack to block it. When there are no more attacks in play you win.
Its so basic it's tedious.
A feeling not helped by the complete lack of any flavour text, we could have a great time imagining our character frantically swatting at a bee while doing 100kph down a mountain road. But the game really doesn't give you anything to go on. Most of us can easily imagine a better game than what Keep Driving fundamentally is, which doesn't make it fun.
I use terms like "combat" and "opponent" but they aren't really fitting, the game is trying (and failing) to "game-ify" the types of encounters you might have while on a long road trip. Like wild life clogging the road or getting stuck behind a slow moving tractor. While those aren't very exciting scenarios they definitely fit the game's aesthetic.
And speaking of, the aesthetic is great, the pixel art is beautiful and the music nails a good vibe. Some of the characters and encounters I had were touching. But ultimately this feels like it should be half the scope and free on Newgrounds during the Flash Player era. Its very style and vibes over substance, it might evoke something in you. If like me you spend a lot of time driving and roadtrips are your escapism. But otherwise, what's here feels clunky and bare bones at best.

It's like Oregon Trail meets Slay the Spire but with a more random variable of certain hitchhikers give you certain things with a couple different paths for more replayability. The one thing though that I can't stand, is how poor the UI is. I do love the pixely indie-music vibes, but the map was so confusing, I was driving back and forth for so long until I realized the map was not centering on me correctly or that I could figure out what symbol actually represented myself. Just pay attention in the beginning to see that, but when I put the game down and came back to it, it was like wtf where am I, what was I doing?
Anyhow, very enjoyable. Definitely love the aspect of unlock new music as you go. I always wished games would do that more often.

8/10 Game is fun but it does get repetitive after awhile. I would recommend this game to people who like using strategy and inventory management. One thing I think the game could improve on is a deeper story for main character.

Despite all its flaws and shortcomings I couldn't help but keep driv... playing this game till its completion.
Keep Driving is a simple rpg with roguelite elements trying to replicate the experiences and the feelings of a road trip.
The game plays in a 2D dimension, choose the location you want to go and while on the actual road driving you'll face some random turn based events which have to be cleared using your skills or items. All these events are based on things that could really happen when driving, like encountering a flock of sheep blocking the road, helping a person whose car broke down or even being chased by cops (who hasn't before?).
There's a good variety of these events but, even though we have lots of skills and traits to choose from, ultimately the turn based system feels very redundant and has a high chance of making you bored with the game. Even small trips will have at least 3 of these events and, personally, I think 1 or 2 less events per road would balance the gameplay loop a bit for the better.
Once you arrive at your destination there will be various "shops" you can visit to keep going with your run, like buying stuff to eat or keep you awake, or just buying some gasoline for you car. You can also explore some curious minimap for items and work/getting quests done for money. Almost forgot to mention it but while on the road, instead of turn based events you could also encounter hitchhikers, which will join you on your road trip and will provide their own set of skills to use, as well as some quests and dialogues.
Since we're on a road trip of course we also have a stereo installed on our car and the soundtrack for this game has a very good indie-rock song compilation. You'll have to collect most of the CDs to listen to new songs and I strongly suggest you to do so because it's worth it.
Overall Keep Driving is a very charming game. Flawed, boring at times perhaps, yes, but still one to remember.

Now that I have stopped driving and gotten back home, I want to share my thoughts on Keep Driving
Hopping right into an inviting-looking pixel world, we start our journey on the wide roads ahead of us. Leaving our parents' home, we pack a few items for our trip to meet up with friends at a festival.
While at first glance it seems that the festival is our main goal, there are other paths we can take.
As we drive, we get to listen to very great songs on our radio and collect more CDs on our journey.
On the road, we encounter threats that we must overcome to keep driving closer to our next goal location. Equipped with skills that we also gain the more we drive, we can make it through the so-called "road events". Items are also at our disposal.
Skills have limited uses and need to recover while sleeping.
There is a variety of Skills and Traits to collect, some of which give us advantages, while others do the opposite.
Not unusual, there are people on the side of the road, wanting to hitchhike, and it is our choice if we want some company along our journey.
The hitchhikers come with great little stories, and we also get their help in road events.
While they are on board, they tell us a little about themselves, and we may be able to help them out.
There are a lot of different endings, some nice cars, upgrades, and hitchhikers to travel with.
All in all, a great experience that I enjoyed a lot and can recommend it!

You know, sometimes you've just had a long or hard day at work, and you want to play something that'll gently stimulate your mind while being fun in a low pressure way. Keep Driving is my goto on those kind of days. It's not difficult, it's not challenging... it's just fun. Natural. Intuitive. A real pleasure to play.
I suspect you have to be at least of a certain age to even understand this game. That's not a criticism. It's nostalgic, but maybe only if you've lived a bit of life in the age before handheld devices.
