"Mom, look at this 3D baguette with a hat." "Maximillian, could you be a bit normal, for puck sakes ???" And so, Monsters of Mican was born.

Monsters of Mican is what you get when you take the gameplay and character building of Might and Magic 6-7, marinade it in Diablo-like loot gathering and then drown it in an ocean of endaringly silly humour with exceptionally mismatched graphics and music. The resulting game looks like a joke. And it is - pretty much every monster is based on a stupid pun: a flying sandwich with magical abilities is called a Sandwitch. A brigand with a porcine face is called a Pigand. Many a time you will roll your eyes at the stupidity of the puns. Of particular note are the sound effects. Most are spoken word. Meaning that when you swing a sword, the sound it makes is the developer shouting SWISH, throw a fireball he yells FROOOSH! It is absolutely and astoundingly silly. And I love it. Despite all of this, the game is shockingly good, even for a very old-school RPG player such as myself. The monsters may be silly, but there is a completely crazy number of different enemy types, each with different abilities ranging from attacks to buffs, heals and debuffs, with many encounters requiring much preparation and strategy to beat. Character building is also very enjoyable. Unlike the older MM titles, loot is mostly randomised and equipment can spawn with different properties, allowing you to bring a highly diverse crew into the dungeon. Leveling up is fast and enjoyable as well, making improving your party feel very rewarding. I highly recommend Monsters of Mican for fans of the old-school Might and Magic games, although you may need a somewhat silly sense of humour to get the most out of it.
