I played this one intensively and beat it on two heroes on Hardcore lvl 10 (very difficult...). For me the review is generally positive but not excellent, around 6.5-7.5. Why? What is good? - Immersion and art - Style - The four heroes - Traditional RPG feel even if it's a card-builder - Strategic choices on every run, involving compromise, especially on high difficulty - Great for players who like challenge - Game is very well balanced/calibrated like Slay the Spire, having gone through many hardcore lvls, really felt it What needs improvement - Combat speed is too slow, even with the 1.5 increase.. compared to monster train it's.. a snooze. Your runs can become 3+ hours because of this, on high difficulties. It needs a 3x speed - Ways to play each hero are limited or too shallow: yes each hero is different from one another, but having played the game deeply, felt like you either go full offense or full defense with retaliation/dot type of damage. So.. lacks quite a bit of depth in this respect - Can feel too hard for casuals.. has a "hard work" mentality to it.. eastern european feel.. being eastern european myself, I could appreciate it.. but.... - Chances to make a good build on a run, especially on high difficulty are hit or miss.. you might finally get the card you needed on the 10th battle, but you didn't know you'd get it, so the previous half of the run you didn't know you had to get the compatible cards. Unfortunately there are no random perks, artifacts, or cards when starting a run to help situate your build. - Could use a "Chapter 2" expansion ;) Anyway, game has great potential and on sale, will scratch that card game itch, but there are also great alternatives like Knock on the Coffin Lid, Vault of the Void, which have more build depth and complexity, but not everyone wants complexity.

The art style and quality are fantastic. The writing is abysmal and the story as generic as it can get. But the main reason I don't recommend is that for a roguelike deckbuilder it has surprisingly little variability and replayability. The four different heroes/classes are definitely unique from each other, but within each one there isn't really anything to it. No interesting cards, no crazy combos, no deep synergies. After I've played two of the heroes for a bit I realized there is no way I would be playing them again.

"Top-Tier Animations, High-Stakes Runs." As someone who has played hundreds of roguelike deck-builders over the years, I don’t say this lightly—Deathless: The Hero Quest is the closest game to Slay the Spire that matches its quality. From its challenging encounters to its deep replayability, this is a game that knows exactly what kind of itch it’s trying to scratch, and it does so with confidence. Yes, my one minor criticism is that it isn’t wholly original. You’ll see familiar mechanics, familiar structure, and familiar pacing. But perhaps it doesn’t need to break the mold—because what it does offer is a rock-solid, finely tuned roguelike deck-building experience that delivers on all the fundamentals. Each character feels drastically different to play, with unique mechanics that force you to rethink your strategy every run. The difficulty curve keeps you on your toes, and there are moments where you’ll genuinely be sweating through the final turns, hoping your deck synergy holds together. The art direction is nothing short of outstanding—rich colors, stylish designs, and animations that are genuinely top-tier for the genre. The music is fine, if unremarkable, and mostly serves as background to the real star: the gameplay. In the end, this isn’t a game that’s trying to reinvent the genre—it’s one that celebrates it. If you’re looking for something completely new, this might not be it. But if you’re craving a polished, challenging, balanced and satisfying deck-builder that carries the spirit of the greats, Deathless: The Hero Quest is more than up to the task.
