Played with 3 friends. Shot 4 random deer and got my 3 friends. They now think I have some secret way to tell it's them. 10/10 I have no idea what I'm doing.

Oh Deer is a clever and unconventional take on the asymmetrical multiplayer genre, blending the lighthearted charm of party games with a creeping sense of paranoia and occasional horror. Developed by Cozy Cabin Studios, the game invites one player to assume the role of a Hunter while up to four others take control of Deer—though not just any Deer. These player-controlled Deer must blend into herds of AI-controlled counterparts, hide in plain sight, and use environmental distractions to avoid detection. Meanwhile, the Hunter is tasked with weeding them out before their own sanity unravels. It’s a deceptively simple concept that opens the door to endless rounds of chaos, laughter, and sudden reversals.
The gameplay loop hinges on observation, deception, and mind games. As the Hunter, you patrol forested landscapes armed with tools like cameras, crossbows, and bear traps, trying to pick out which of the many Deer in your line of sight are being controlled by human players. Every time you shoot an innocent AI Deer, your sanity takes a hit. That sanity mechanic isn’t just a gimmick—it’s central to the game's pacing and tension. The more mistakes the Hunter makes, the more distorted their perception becomes, with creepy hallucinations and subtle environmental shifts signaling their mental decline. If their sanity hits zero, the roles are reversed in a terrifying twist: the Deer become monstrous wendigo-like creatures, and the Hunter must scramble to reach safety before they’re devoured.
Playing as a Deer is a mix of subtlety and mischief. The objective is to blend in with AI Deer while foraging for mushrooms to stave off hunger. Eating these mushrooms, however, creates an audio cue—an opportunity for the Hunter to detect your position. This creates a clever balance of risk and reward. Moving too much draws suspicion. Staying still for too long makes survival difficult. Add in the fact that Deer can use special abilities—like the absurdly funny fart dash—to evade capture or confuse the Hunter, and every match becomes a game of psychological cat-and-mouse. These moments, where players bait the Hunter into wasting sanity or pull off a narrow escape, often lead to laughter and high-fives all around.
What gives Oh Deer its unique identity is the tone it strikes between comedy and horror. The game doesn’t take itself too seriously, with playful animations, exaggerated physics, and intentionally goofy mechanics, but it also knows how to deliver a scare when needed. As the Hunter’s mental state deteriorates, the screen begins to glitch, creepy audio cues creep in, and the transformation of Deer into glowing-eyed predators is sudden and genuinely unsettling. This shift in atmosphere midway through a match adds a dramatic tension spike that ensures no game feels predictable. It’s not just a funny party game—it’s a surprisingly effective mood switcher, capable of going from comedy to horror and back again in seconds.
Visually, the game employs a stylized, cartoon-like aesthetic that complements its blend of humor and unease. The forest environments are dense and well-designed, offering both visibility and concealment depending on the map. Subtle lighting shifts help signal the change in tone when midnight falls and the Deer reveal their true nature. The character models, while simple, are expressive and exaggerated in ways that enhance gameplay—especially when trying to spot which Deer are acting “a little too human.” The sound design deserves praise too, particularly for how it feeds the tension with ambient noise, well-timed audio cues, and a soundtrack that shifts alongside the sanity meter.
Multiplayer is where Oh Deer shines brightest. While there is no single-player mode, the game’s core experience is built for short, punchy rounds with friends, either locally or online. Each match typically lasts under ten minutes, making it perfect for party game rotations or casual play sessions. That said, the game’s simplicity can be a double-edged sword. With only a handful of maps and a limited pool of abilities or modifiers, some players may find the novelty wearing thin after a few hours. However, for most groups, the social dynamics and unpredictable antics provide more than enough replay value—especially with varied skill levels or play styles in the mix.
In its current form, Oh Deer is a strong proof of concept with a surprisingly effective execution. It capitalizes on the growing popularity of social deduction and asymmetrical games, but instead of mimicking existing formulas, it adds its own personality. It’s a game built around interaction—silent stares, sudden movements, panicked dashes—and that interaction fuels both its tension and hilarity. The psychological edge given to both sides, from the Hunter’s sanity to the Deer’s hunger, ensures players are constantly under pressure, even when the screen seems calm.
Oh Deer may not have the depth of larger multiplayer titles or the content variety of longer-lived franchises, but it offers something few games do: a consistent, memorable, and accessible experience that’s just as fun to watch as it is to play. With continued updates or expansions, it could grow into a cult favorite. As it stands, it’s an excellent addition to any friend group’s game night—a perfect storm of chaos, cleverness, and occasional horror, all wrapped up in deer disguises and deadly misunderstandings.

I loved this game! I recommend buying it only if you are going to play it with friends in a call or something because that is the most fun you will have in the game. It is great from the horror elements at the end of a match, to the funny shenanigans that you get throughout it. It is fun even with just two other friends but really fun with a bigger group of people. You can also customize your match to make a certain map every time or change the amount of deer that spawn on the map. Solid game.
