This is the third "Cats Hidden" game I've played (after Paris and Italy), and it's the first I'm not recommending. All these games revolve around the same mechanic of seeking out and clicking on cats, so what makes this one not as good? Well, I've got a few gripes:
- The art overall is weaker. The foliage is too busy, filled with swirls and squiggles that barely read as leaves (and that almost never hide any cats). The cats themselves aren't as well-defined. The perspective is off. It just doesn't look as good.
- There is a reliance on copy-pasted visual elements such as houses, steps, plants, and more. The bamboo forest is symmetrical along a vertical axis. The dragon in the sky is the same as the dragon on the side of a building. Part of the fun of analyzing every inch of the environment is observing all the little details, and this is made less interesting when you see the same imagery repeated.
- I don't expect the artist to learn how to write hiragana and katakana, much less kanji, but the approximation of Japanese text on the buildings is almost offensively bad. It looks as though the artist saw Japanese text for the first time a week ago and is now trying to draw it from memory. The artist would have been better served copying actual Japanese text.
- There are large areas in the picture with no cats at all. They sky is full of clouds with swirly patterns in them, none of which contain a cat. There is a large castle with dozens of windows, bricks, textured walls, and lined roofing, without a single cat to be found anywhere.
- The picture's just too darned big. I criticized Cats Hidden in Italy for being bare bones, but the entire environment could fit on my screen when zoomed out. Fully zoomed in, you could see a quarter of the picture at a time. In Cats Hidden in Japan, you can only see a quarter of the picture when fully zoomed out! When zooming in (which you'll have to do), you can only see a small fraction of the whole picture. It gets exhausting when you only have 4 cats left to find but need to keep scouring every inch of a huge environment that contains a lot of wasted space and repeated visual elements.
Having said that, there are some positives here.
- I like that every cat has a Japanese name. It's a fun detail that gives the game a bit more personality.
- When you find all the cats, you unlock a colored version of the picture, which is really quite lovely.
- The music is decent, and can be changed by finding and clicking on radios.
- There are a couple of interesting things to click on just for fun, such as a vending machine.
Still, this is the weakest of the "Cats Hidden" games I've played so far, and I found it more frustrating than relaxing to play.

Japanese text on buildings is completely WRONG. Some of the text is more like Korean text, showing that illustrators are not familiar with Japanese staff. It is not enjoyable when I am confusing about the real meaning of the text. As an enjoyer of Cats Hidden series, I really hope developers can do better in the next episode.

If you enjoy the others, you'll like this one. All the little easter eggs are really cute and makes the experience more enjoyable.

art: 3-4 (amazing line art for setting. not so much for the hidden cats themselves which more remselbe shoggoths of lovecratian lore)
concept: 3/5 (see 'note' at end of review)
execution: 4/5
challenge: 4/5 (more difficult than most offerings from this dev and thats a good thing. don't forget to change colour schemes if you're stuck. it helps!)
hints: unlocked after 90% completion (yikes!)
types of hidden objects: n/a
No. of Puzzles: 1
secret/unlisted hidden objects: not really but there are secret objects that can be interacted with though they do not effect one's progress in the game.
music: 5/5 (one of the only ones of these to have the option to change to music (if you know where to look [e.g. hidden object])
note:
choose location, create line-drawing including relevant monuments and architectural style, hide cats (cat-like blobs) within line-drawing. rinse. wash. repeat. i suppose if it ain't broke, don't fix it?
In this particular case we have the slightly more difficult version of the "100 cats" hidden cat franchise [which seem to be the greatest competitor to], namely the "Cats Hidden..." hidden cat franchise.
it only has one puzzle but the challenge and options included for said puzzle, makes it comparable to other games with 2-3 (much easier) puzzles. as always, try to get it as part of a discounted bundle to get the most bang for your buck when purchasing hidden cat games.
