TL;DR Version: Visual Novel (VN) Creators should get this game, it will inspire you on a technical level. Quiet, nineties-era American comic inspired art and colour, palette-cleansing 2-5 hour highly interactive VN that has some refreshing twists on the genre. Minimal music, minimal sound effects. Decently made, but puzzles will be frustrating for some as the logic is not always apparent and the hints are bad at times; also the mechanics are not entirely polished. Translation doesn't flow quite as well as it could but still works. Recommended, but honestly neutral about it; the good and bad are balanced for me.
I'm torn between saying "pay full price because it's an indie game and they need every cent of support" and "wait for it to be on sale". I don't regret paying the full price.
Why you should pay full price: It's an indie studio, this is their second game, they're taking risks to change the VN format for the better, and they're learning how to improve with each game. Your House should be the inspiration for other creators to push the technical boundaries of Ren'py or learn to use Godot instead of staying with the boring, stale forty-plus-years-old format.
Why you shouldn't: It's very short, the puzzles can be frustrating, mechanics are a little awkward, the story isn't that great or as well thought out and some may find the sledgehammer feminist stance a little off-putting. Or you're broke which is valid.
The much longer, "I wish Steam would implement some kind of neutral recommendation button" version:
Let's start with what I think was (subjectively) "bad":
*some of the puzzles were so illogical to me; it could be my neuro-divergent brain or I'm just not cut out for some puzzle games, but the circle/triangle book solution I ended up brute-forcing. And the final puzzle, how in the {bleep} was I to get that solution? Some, I had to exit the "picture" and go back in for them to work, like the table lamp in chapter 4, or the four cats if I got the order wrong; it isn't a huge deal, but there should be a reset within the scene if there was a mistake made.
*I didn't mind so much all of the backtracking in the maze as it's common in Hidden Object Puzzle Games, but I had to go grab a physical notebook and pen to keep track of everything to remember. It would have been nice to have an in-game notebook to use instead, or be able to put our own scrap of paper in the one given.
*This may/will be polarizing for some: at this time, the characterisation of Debbie really fell flat for me. I think the plot line referring to the Riot grrrl third-wave feminist movement feels so dated because feminism itself has changed so much in North America where I live. It could also be the fact that I was still in elementary school when that cultural shift came about. The messaging of this game may land much better depending on where you live, or if you know of/participated in the Riot grrrl movement. Yes, as a female, I need to educate myself on modern feminism.
*"An overly rebellious bi-sexual eighteen year old girl, abused and overly controlled by her dad gets into a relationship with a cheating man; she gets her revenge by pouring beer on the two, then escapes her school, steals the affair partner's motorcycle and inherits a house/mansion from a mysterious unknown person". So many Young Adult Novel clichés and tropes are put in the setup that have been done to death, which leads me to not being sympathetic towards her (mileage will vary on this comment). This would have gone over much better to some degree in the nineties media, that's for sure; now it's more cringe than hard-hitting, or juvenile than sophisticated.
Note: I do want to point out that it appears this game was translated from Spanish; some details, or cultural differences may have gotten lost in the translation and/or localisation. The above point may be something standard in a telenovela which I know absolutely nothing about except they're full to the brim with melodrama. I am willing to be wrong on this one.
OK. Now on to the much better, more positive things!
*SO. MANY. AMAZING. REFERENCES! The musicians mentioned, the songs I had to sing a bit of, the town buildings on the map, the Viewfinder(tm), the detective lawn decorations, the possible (yet some quite anachronistic) pet names to choose from... I laughed when I read them, and others I'll have to look up. I also screen shot the recipe. Don't judge me.
*Thank you for not doing the market-over-saturated, over-used and completely appropriated Japanese-style of art and backgrounds in this VN! You don't know how refreshing it was to not see cutesy, barely-legal, hyper-sexualized, impractically clothed girls and boys everywhere.
*More on the art: It's just Debbie, alone, in her minimalist late eighties/early nineties comic book styling. The design is so clean, has sharp lines, is uncrowded in decor, has a dark, limited colour palette and doesn't look like a unicorn barfed bright neon sparkles and frills all over. It was so pleasant to look at.
*Anyone remember those old eighties and nineties books where you were given a page choice of where to go and what ending you would get? It may only be a Gen X and Millennial thing. Anyway, those "hyperlinks" gave me those vibes. It brought back some good memories of reading those stories in my local library as a kid.
*While this is primarily a VN, it is one of the most interactive I have ever played. Kudos to the team for making it, and for adding those twists on it. Instead of tap tap tap forever, or tap tap choice tap tap choice, I finally felt like I was a part of the story instead of being a bored passive reader trying to get the "best ending" or all of the achievements.
All in all, I'm neutral positive on my recommendation. There are a number of flaws, but the studio is actively taking in constructive criticism to make their next game(s) better. They're also defying the standard VN format, and giving it a more old-school RPG feel.
Play it for the novelty. Play it for mechanics inspiration. Play it for the different art style. Play it for the defiance against the genre's ridged rules. Play it so we can maybe have more artistic and technical variety in the VN game space.
