Summary
Definitely one of the most interesting games I played and I've played many. I longed for that good "retro" feel of games that I had with old NFS titles - that means captivating singleplayer mode and no added bullshit like microtranscations and always online requirement. After completing all the Early Access content I am very pleased.
The idea is very well executed, even though it's not a huge map I felt that there was a lot to do. Still rough around the edges and that's understandable as it's Early Access and I will address this now.
Things to fix/change
- game economy -> the upgrades are far too expensive. The 1st tier is normal but later on the upgrades cost 2/3rd the price of a car, and I'm talking ONE part. It gets to the point where the highest powertrain upgrade is nearly as expensive as the Skyline, that's just stupid and you have to sell cars to upgrade everything to the max or grind for hours.
- music -> I don't know if the devs are planning to add some more music, but it would defo be a good idea. There are far to few tracks and they get repetitive pretty fast.
- broken English -> It is clear that not a native nor even a proficient English speaker was translating the EN version. There are quite a few grammar mistakes and just plain wrong use of words. These include:
- "option" => "options"
- "setting" => "settings"
Some weird phrasing as "GO TO GARAGE" instead of "GOING TO THE GARAGE" or "GO TO THE GARAGE" (depends on intent) and many more... So devs: hire a good translator cause while all the English can be understood without any issues, it leaves a sour taste and seems unprofessional because of all the mistakes.
- gameplay balance -> Some things need to be balanced, for example it makes no sense to me why the tires get worn out only when racing but not when free roaming (regardless of speed), the tire mechanic is.. idk how to put it, kind of unneccesary; plus 50k to replace at the parking area is far too expensive, considering you may be getting 60K on average by beating someone.
That's all (I think), I may add more things to this as I plan to keep on playing and I will await the full release cause the game is very good overall!!

This feels like a faithful remake of the PS2 versions of the game. I still own them and play them. I prefer TXR: Zero.
I beat the game in 24 hours of game play. There are still more races to complete and a bunch of cars I could buy. The game completed with a popup saying the Early Access part of the game had completed. Hopefully they will add more cars and more content. The only thing I immediately missed was the horn. The older games had it and I would honk and flash my lights while racing. It feels like there's something missing xD.
If you want that early 2000 feel, play Ludacris Move while racing.

The perfect gateway off of Midnight Racing: Tokyo. For an early-access game it felt amazing! The only thing I can comment on is the AI needing some improvements but its stupid fun otherwise.
Makes me want to play the older games to see what they're like...

There's just something special in cruising on Japanese highways going 200+ kph while listening to wangan midnight soundtrack that tickles just the right spot in my brain. It's peak

I played the game when it came out, had fun with it and came back recently to see what's changed in the last 6 months (which isn't much TBH).
TLDR: The game is okay. 95% of races aren't challenging and are over in 20 seconds, but that 5% of tough neck-and-neck battles makes it very addictive. Customisation is clunky but good for those into making crazy decals. Worth picking up at full price, I got over 20 hours out of this beating the main 'story'.
Here are a few suggestions I have to make the game better:
- Adjustable traffic density and speed
Most of the map consists of long straights with infrequent NPC cars that are easy to avoid. Denser traffic will make those sections more dynamic.
- Adjustable level scaling
Sometimes I just want to race back-to-back with a maxed out car, but most opponents are too low level to make that interesting. Being able to scale them up would be nice, or possibly a kind of boss rush mode/new game plus?
- Improve the sense of speed
To me it feels like you are travelling 40% slower than the speedometer reads. I think it's a combination of not enough objects passing by, traffic speed being too high relative to yours and your speed being too low. Make it feel like I'm driving twice the legal limit!
- Vehicle damage
I'm not looking for the simulator kind of specific part damage, just a health bar that's separate from the SP bar that drains as you collide with cars and the terrain throughout the night. Dropping to 0 would force you back to the garage. Add it as an option alongside oil and water temps. This would incentivise better driving.
- More modes
It's been nearly 20 years since the original games, I think we have the technology to add different kinds of races. Crew battles where everyone is racing at the same time, a Gun Game mode (like the one in COD) where every battle you win gets you a better car, a rouge-like mode where you can pick up upgrades at interchanges as you beat increasingly tougher opponents. Maybe even cops and robbers? These are just a few ideas.
- Multiplayer
Doesn't need to be ranked matchmaking or anything, just the ability for players to create a lobby to chill in and race each other. This will boost the longevity of the game.

Played non-stop and finished it 8 hours after buying. Brought back memories of playing NFS Underground 1 — great experience overall.
I just wish the UX/UI was more refined, with better navigation, skippable cutscenes, and clearer boss race requirements on the map. With those fixes, it would easily be one of the best street racing games.

One of the most faithful and triumphant game revivals this generation
...despite one crucial, fatal flaw. I don't know how many of you actually played the OG Tokyo Xtreme Racer, but this commits an act of inconceivable, unforgivable aura loss by relegating the action of returning to your garage to a pause menu press. We used to have to take the off ramp and actually exit the highway to end the session. That was pure mechanical swagger. That's a game design chef's kiss. Let me take the off ramp. Let me exit in style.

They somehow have captured the spirit of the previous games flawlessly, after all this time. It seems like the handling model and gameplay loop is all flushed out and just getting little tweaks. The story is complete and absolutely zany and pseudo-philosophical; it's got tons of camp and charm with really fun and almost nonsensical-at-times characters.
Some of the elements related to hunting down specific rivals can feel tedious. It would be a lot of help if we could turn around more easily. There are plenty of spots to perform illegal u-turns and letting us change direction more easily would feel more respectful of the player's time. Otherwise, if you want to change direction, you may have to go half-way around the map to find a parking garage with dual entrance/exits or 3/4 of the map and do a figure 8 on an interchange.
The customization is decent. Performance stuff is just different levels to unlock, gated behind perks and certain opponents. Livery has a bunch of options and a lot of versatility. There are some missing features, such as being able to create designs and save/copy-paste them and restricting vinyl shapes to specific car panels. Being able to import custom logos to use as vinyl would be cool, too.
The last thing that is missing is a replay feature. I loved watching the replays of more intense races on the Dreamcast. IIRC, they could be saved, too. I miss that. I just had a race against a boss where both of us were trading paint and caught some serious airtime coming over a hill and into a corner, right on each other's heels. I would have loved a cinematic replay of that...
Other than that, it's fantastic. It's like comfort food. We need more arcade racers like this.

Refunded forza motorsport for not supporting linux and got this instead.
Best decision of my gamer life in years.
I'm new to the series, so everything in this is fresh for me.
The game is very simple, and my first impressions weren't the best. But as soon as i got into the game, it became addicting.
This game has an awesome career mode with REAL progression, so you're always like "just one more run. gotta get that upgrade. Ok now i have to test it, see how much better my car is now. Whoa great, now i think i can beat that guy that i couldn't before! let's try that... And now... ok i have to go but i'm so close to the next upgrade, one last, final race..."
plus the way you're just wandering around looking for opponents is great. it's a meaningful freeroam game. it's awesome.
only bad part was towards the end of a chapter where there is barely anyone new for you to beat. i bought a new car and my new car couldn't beat anything so i had to grind a little against repeated opponents to finally beat a rival and get out of the rut. i could've used my old car but... yeah, the point is that you can almost softlock yourself in some ways.
and i wish i could refund outdated upgrades. there's no reason to have them since upgrades of the same part are not additive, but "substitutive" (you replace tier 1 with tier 2).
