A game that's truly one to suck you in if you like this genre of RTS/resource management.
The dev did a great job allowing you to "choose your spice" in terms of your difficulty level, very useful for testing out certain combinations or defensive designs. For an indie game, the music also has no right to be this awesome, pleasant and upbeat during the down-time between waves and yet hectic and rocking during the assault waves (in particular the final wave). If this helps at all, first day I played it I put eight hours on before I knew what had happened.
Dev is continuely working on the game, as well as listening to bugs/suggestions from players. Definitely game development the way it's meant to be.
Pros:
+ Relatively easy to learn
+ "Choose-your-own" difficulty helps soften the learning curve and keeps things from getting stale
+ "Endless mode" is the best thing I've seen come to this genre of RTS, for when you really want the game to throw everything it has at you
+ Sprite work is lovely and endearing
+ Music is sublime
+ Exploration of the map actually feels rewarding
+ Very very difficult to "soft lock" yourself out of victory
+ Even if you fail, it usually teaches you some kind of lesson
+ Despite the scale you usually see the battle, the big guns feel big and even the little ones aren't out-classed|
+ There's a very real feeling of accomplishment on beating the harder difficulties
Cons:
- There's some minor bugs with spawning, but as the game is actively being developed this is less of an issue
- Terrain generation can lead to some weird issues, but very minor ones that ultimately have no real bearing (more of a nit-pick)
- Waiting for resources can be a bit tedious, but par the course for this genre
It's incredibly difficult to come up with cons, but that's the best I got.
Overall, a fun game and well worth the money and support.

This was one of those purchases i made "well it sounds nice but i'll see what i think of it within my 2h refund time" but it ended up playing it non-stop for 2 days straight.
I really like RTS games. I really like citybuilders. When 'They are Billions' (TAB) was released years ago, it was a dream to play. There's been horde-style RTS games before (especially Warcraft and Starcraft mods) but none really captured quite the essence as well as TAB did. Seeing as how that game got fairly popular, it was no surprise it was going to get some spin-offs.
I've played a handful of those that tried to imitate it, Cataclismo, Diplomacy is Not an Option, Creeper World, Age of Darkness, Infection Free Zone and Kingdoms and Castles. From Glory to Goo (FGTG), however, is easily my favorite now, even with its simple graphics and even though it is not fully feature complete yet. And that's some high praise, since that's some stiff competition right there.
The premise is simple: Survive. Build a city. Explore across the map. Eliminate the enemies. Reclaim land to expand your city. Defend it from counterattacks. Nothing new there, but FGTG executes it solidly. FGTG is far more fast-pace than the others mentioned previously, with continuous probing attacks and the threat of a 'domino effect' looming over your head at all times. Habs (houses) get destroyed? They spawn more enemies now. Connector got cut off? Now half of your defenses are out of power. Some solar panels got destroyed? Your turrets wont have enough energy to fire at full efficiency. Thumper (a building you need to reclaim safe buildable space) got knocked out? Now the entire area is going to emerge enemies from the ground for every unit that walks over that area. It's frantic, difficult and at times a bit unfair. But it keeps the stakes high and unlike an issue i've encountered with previous TAB-likes, doesn't encourage you to slow down. True, that might not make this game everyone's cup of tea, but it sure as hell clicks for me.
With that level of difficulty though, you are also provided with some very powerful tools to even the odds. These come from three parts: Specialist units you can recruit, your captain (a 'hero' unit) and your spaceship.
When starting the game you can select a spaceship to use and a captain. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the captains have very different playstyles, even though i was expecting only minute differences at first. They get specific units that can wildly alter how you play, bonuses that emphasize a particular strength of your arsenal and upgrades that can turn your captain into a dangerously powerful unit, or provide significant bonuses to all your units at large.
But arguably the coolest part of this is the spaceship. Essentially, you are not just building a city, you are also building a spaceship. All but two ships you can unlock are half-blown apart and filled with hostile boarding parties. You need to spend resources on the ground to upgrade the ship and clear out the enemy boarding parties so that the ship can help your forces on the ground later. Certain parts of the ship can be outfitted with space-borne weapons that can provide fire support on the ground, and those REALLY make a difference. I saw another review mention it felt like the call-ins from Helldivers, and i gotta say it feels like an apt comparison.
To top it off, the soundtrack has no business being this good. I love it. It's also worth mentioning i've encountered zero bugs so far, but i did encounter some small quality of life improvements it could need. I might want to make a list of those and send it as a suggestion sometime.
So far it seems the devs have really put some more love into the game as well. There's a new faction added that you can not only play as but also fight against and a map editor with workshop support. I'm really eager to see where the game will end up in the future!
It's not often i run into a game where i'd say the biggest negative is that i wish it had more of what it already has. If any of the developers is reading this, please, add mod support. It's going to be amazing.

This game has a ton of content for being in early-access (and by a lone developer!). This game deserves to be in the same conversation as They Are Billions or Age of Darkness as a city-builder survival RTS. I suspect this game will surpass both one day.

Considering its early access, I will give it an OK.
The early game is nice and the challenge interesting, but as you enter late game I find it underwhelming. I did not feel challenged. Hope they work on the sense of progression and difficulty.

This game is something special. I've played a few "They are billions-likes" — most notably Diplomacy is not an Option, and Age of Darkness: Final Stand. Each of these are good games in their own right, but have their clunky elements and frustrations. Glory to Goo is still in early access, but in my opinion surpasses these games significantly. It has familiar elements such as managing/balancing various types of resources, and the need for efficient base planning, but cuts out the frustrating parts and gives a tight and engaging experience. I've completed two survival maps so far and I'm very impressed. There hasn't been any "fiddly" annoyances.
The learning curve isn't too steep. It gets hard, but it gives you chance to become familiar. Initially you feel OP with all of the tools at your disposal such as ship bombardment and Captain abilities, but when you start encountering the bigger waves you'll be fighting for your life.
In short, this game is awesome. There's plenty to do despite being in early access. The price is very good. The graphics look naff in the trailer, which put me off initially, but when you're actually playing you'll be immersed and the graphics will feel just fine. Sound design is another highlight. Great music. When you pan the camera or zoom in there are whirring noises as if you're viewing everything through your ship's cameras. The sci-fi setting is also really compelling. If you like these RTS survival type games, this is an essential purchase.

Another case of graphics meaning nothing. The idea is good, the execution is solid and more importantly it's fun!

Having gamed enough over the years, despite the odd gap due to a lack of opportunities here & there, I've come to be wary of Early Access games, since there's a 50/50 chance of the buyer getting screwed over.
We've all heard the stories; a title's abandoned, or the developer's done a run-and-gun of sorts & absconded with whatever profits they've made from our purses. Certainly, a way to reinforce cynicism among gamers in this day and age.
From Glory to Goo (FGtG) does not seem to fit that bill. Not only is the dev Stratagem Blue (who I believe is a one-person outfit) quite interactive with the player base, taking into account the suggestions & bug reports seriously, the title they've developed is simply too fun for words.
Resembling other games like They Are Billions, Diplomacy is Not an Option, and Age of Darkness, among others, FGtG's simpler pixel graphics belie the challenges one faces when dealing with the alien Goo or even rogue AI.
Quite literally, you adapt or die. Each map type has its challenges, be it a lack of space to expand, sufficient ground for water, or sandstorms affecting one's power supply. Some of the game's mechanics are unique, like refitting a spaceship to provide for your base on the planet, and the ability to play as both human and AI.
As it stands, FGtG is a relatively easy game to learn, and the title shows much promise. I'm curious to see what the campaign holds, as well as the other captains currently in the works (as of this review's writing).
The game has no drawbacks per se and is blessedly bug-free, but some of the hotkeys should be made more apparent for users, as the options menu doesn't seem to include everything.
On a side note, FGtG's music is top-notch. I gather that the OST is from Stellardrone and Scott Buckley, who've released it as royalty-free music. I should thank the dev for introducing me to a new source of auditory joy.
In conclusion, get this game, even in Early Access. No regrets on my part, and likely none for you as well.
