To keep this as honest as possible: I know one of the devs but bought SAMUZA with my own money to keep this review as impartial as possible.
What is SAMUZA? A charming (and sometimes infuriating) platformer. It’s controls are as basic as it gets: Move and Jump. There are no power-ups, no skill unlocks, just a jump you can control mid-air and lots of trial and error. There are some bugs, but nothing too game breaking, just some weird clipping when you have been knocked out of the stage and are resetting.
The campaign consists of you going through different worlds, each with multiples stages, to get the 9 keys that will reset the World. It’s a basic story, you are doing this for the challenge and gameplay and in my opinion for the asking price it’s quite decent.
I got 3 kets so far and some stages are simple enough where you get into a flow and dominate it, others have some hellish sequences you just keep failing over and over again until you finally beat it. Each stage has checkpoints so you don’t have to keep replaying from the start and MAN, does it feel good to nail it and actually beat the stage. Just a quick tip: most of the times, the big blue line in the middle of the road is a safe zone, use it to stop and plan what you are going to do. Had to use those to breathe and figure out how to beat the next bit.
Now for the “Create!” part: You have a stage creator where you pick a template “road” and edit it as much as your want. You can edit every single bit of the road if you want with the tricks and traps you have been unlocking by playing the main campaign. Just like Mario Maker, you need to beat your own stage at least once so you are able to share it online with others. It’s simple enough to create these stages using a controller. I think this is the main reason for you to create an account, this is the big social aspect of the game.
I know you can play with another player bur still haven’t tried it out as I’m mostly a SP kind of guy.
There are also some skins you can buy with in-game Money to customize your little robot and uh, they are very japanese style, let’s call it that xD
Music: This part is a mixed bag for me. Instead of a “true” soundtrack it has several different songs that it will play, each identified by it’s name and artist. Some I consider absolute bangers, others I dislike a lot. It’s really annoying to be stuck in one of those hellish bits losing over and over again with a track you dislike.
I think SAMUZA has plenty bang for your buck if you are in the market for a small challenging platformer.
