I'm currently going through a phase where I prefer shorter games. I feel I'm not quite ready to commit weeks to a single title, so I'm determined to finish games that don’t overuse my time. It's just that Girlfriend from Hell took it a bit too far…
Wondering how I found this game? So am I. I even searched through my sources, but unfortunately, the mystery remains. Because although the concept is promising—clearly inspired by Neighbours from Hell from 2003—the execution is a tragedy that would make even Sophocles envious.
I could mention the two technical issues I faced: having to change my screen resolution (5120 x 1440) for the visuals to display correctly, and the fact that during my first four or five attempts, the cursor kept drifting downward—but I won’t dwell on it. Mainly because, along with the troubleshooting time, I spent a total of 64 minutes on Girlfriend from Hell.
My first issue with the game is its story. Miya was obsessively in love with her boyfriend, Haruto, and when she got tired of waiting for him to propose after five years, she proposed herself. Haruto, however, rejected her in favor of his video games (I can relate). That’s when Miya decides to make his life hell, and the game begins.
Although Girlfriend from Hell doesn’t stand up to serious criticism, I can’t help but comment on its so-called story. Just how healthy is this relationship I witnessed? Is nobody bothered by the fact that Haruto spends the game practically stalking a neighbor? And finally, if the roles were reversed, how humorous would Miya's abuse feel? I doubt the game’s creator considered any of this…
My other problem is the gameplay. The game consists of eight missions, all in the same setting, with the same objective: Miya grabs specific items from shelves to set traps and sabotage devices to irritate her not-so-much boyfriend. She has three minutes to set up the necessary traps; otherwise, it’s back to square one. Haruto always follows the same routines, so even if you don’t succeed on the first try, you will on the second.
The gameplay is repetitive, as some traps appear in more than one mission, and it doesn’t contribute to any plot development. In fact, there’s no plot at all: after completing the eighth mission, there’s no epilogue, so you can assume you’ve finished the game (which you’ll likely do in one sitting).
For all the reasons mentioned above, Girlfriend from Hell isn’t worth even the £1.94 I paid for it. Oh well, it’s been years since I played such a bad game.

This is a cute, fun little game. It is worth the price. I found the art very comical and fun. The animations are hilarious with the voicing, and overall, I had a good time playing it. It is not a long game, but the mechanics and puzzle gameplay to it could easily allow for longer and more challenging puzzles. The music fits the game, and some puzzles make you think a little about what you need to do since you have a time limit for each level.
