Great introduction to genre! Not my typical jam but found it amusing with just the right level of relatable (and sometimes infuriating) characters!

The following is a spoiler-free review but it describes the general theme of the game. Disclaimer: I know the developers personally but the review is entirely my honest opinion. Getting Canceled is a story-based game where John, a kind of bland person, joins the marketing team of a beverage company. It's clear that his colleauges have strong- and differing opinions on a variety of matters. John therefore has to navigate the office landscape and is inevitably forced into taking sides, not only in company-related decisions, but also in a myriad of interesting office discussions as well as break room banter. The game has a fun and interesting concept, relevant in today's age in regard to "cancel culture" and a highly polarised political climate, where it is excpected of one to have a strong opinion in most matters, regardless on how well read one is on a given topic. Many of the events or comments by the characters in the story were hilarious and had me laughing out loud but the game also offers a more serious side as it promts John with e.g. moral/societal dilemmas that may deserve some reflection. Like in real life, it can be difficult to predict how the surrounding characters will react when you take a stand in such a discussion, even if you deliberately try to appease or annoy them. One one hand, the characters are, as could be expected from extremely opinionated personalities, easily offended and at times enervating to deal with. On the other hand, this is part of what makes the game interesting. While the game is for the most part linear, the choices John makes along the way will have an effect on the story, including its outcome. Upon finishing the game I was eager to replay it making other choices, and I was not dissapointed! The game has a clean drawn art style accompanied by music that varies from scene to scene. There is no voice acting in the game however. For myself, who is new to the genre of visual novels, it was a fun experience and a good introduction to the genre. Playtime (half-censored in case you consider it a spoiler):
Roughly 3,5 hours for one playthrough.
There is too much realism in the game. And by realism, I mean, when the main character experiences boredom, the game provides the player will ALL the boredom. When I play a game, if the MC is bored, it should take one dialog prompt to tell me the player that he is bored. Not this game, this game requires you to plow through 15-20 prompts of boring text to really drive it home. MC is also too nice. Maurice is so annoying. Again, I don't play games to get annoyed. Fewer prompts to convey how annoying he is would make the game playable as opposed to feeling like I need to endure the game. All the office folk are terrible stereotypes. And the MC can be a bit stupid at times. Note: I'm on day 6 of the game. (And even that includes some stupidity. Started work on Monday, Day 6 isn't Saturday. MC still went to work. And this is after the boss said we should get together on the weekend???)
