I haven't played it for that long but I don't see where the hatred of this game comes from. It feels like a passion project. Everything put in the game feels like it's there just because the developer wanted it to be there and I appreciate that sort of thing in a game.
Also people keep saying the dev is racist which I don't understand. I know him personally. He's a normal guy
