I completed Kukuevo today. I initially did not purchase the game due to numerous comments in the the Community Hub and the Review that stated the English language translation did not work. I will note that Developer acknowledgement of the problem was excessively delayed and people seemed upset by that fact and that is why I waited to purchase it. It was fixed as of late November 2023.
I was originally attracted to Kukuevo due to the artwork shown on Steam and the fact that the story seemed different and interesting. The artwork is stylistically different and I would call it retro with a twist. It goes well with the story but I would have liked to have seen more variations in the characters because it seemed limited in scope and did not always fit the situation in clothing or expressions. The story was different than I expected from the blurb but it was still interesting. It could have used more fleshing out though, especially on some of the background in the village. I liked some of the twists that came out depending on your choices. However, they could have been developed more, too. The English translation was adequate overall but some people might be confused by the different idioms and phrases used. The words may be correct but perhaps it would be better to replace them with terms that a native English speaker would be familiar with in day to day usage. I have mixed feelings about actually doing it though and I could follow it okay.
I liked Kukuevo and think it is worth the time to experience it. It is a solid first effort that is good but could be better. The Developers need to be more involved with the community, too. There was a lot of solid interest and even enthusiasm exhibited among members of the Community Hub. I hope this review is of use to people. It is actually my first review and I really want people to get something out of it that helps them honestly assess the game.
