Sure, the first one is better and has a lot more to it, but this is an excellent game and if you loved the first one, you will at least very much like this one. But if you are one of those "This doesn't meet my expectations exactly so it's trash" or "Series x doesn't match the books word for word so I hate it", then you won't like this. I for one am loving playing a game that feels very much like another game I love, the first one. WELL worth the money.

If you enjoy tower defense you'll likely have a great time with this game. I thoroughly enjoyed 100% this game, neat little story and I really enjoyed the maps/tower selection.

would recommend / good fun but not as hard core as the DQ1 ( so far in less than 7 hrs of play). really enjoy this art which is p sweet, vibrant, and has an more illustrative cool style // appreciate that the battles are more up close with details on the creatures here (even though DQ1's bit-stiyle-art was also cool) // this story thus far is less compelling than DQ1, but i do appreciate the fresh shift in genre // customizing the party in this one is not really optional and is a bit of a bummer, but the types of party member abilities are more broad and interesting and def fun to explore. I agree with other folks that the strategy is limited, but ultimately tis still good fun and vote it as sentimental play for folks who enjoyed the first one and an easy intro for new comers.

Short version: Defender's Quest 2: Mists of Ruin is a very fun, atmospheric tower defence game with a great story, quite in the vein of its predecessor. In a direct comparison with it, it is admittedly lesser in various regards - but since DQ1 was so brilliant, even a lesser version of it is still great, and I would highly recommend it.

Long version: Here, I will just describe Defender's Quest 2 on its own merits, as I would for those who do not yet know the series. If you are familiar with Defender's Quest 1, I actually have quite a lot to say about that - so much so, in fact, that it completely blew past the character limit for a review like this. So I instead posted it (alongside this review) in a discussion thread, linked here. For those who don't know Defender's Quest yet - it is a tower defence game, where you place and upgrade stationary defenders along one or several paths, via which waves of enemies attempt to reach a goal, which you are trying to protect. Some enemy types are faster, some are tougher, some attempt to damage your defenders as they pass by, some carry armor which greatly reduces damage dealt to them and should, ideally, be removed for full damage potential, and in some missions there are bosses with further unique mechanics. Your defenders likewise come in many variations and with different abilities - some are short-ranged, some long, some deal damage in an area, some inflict damage-over-time effects, and most have some way or another of inflicting various status effects on your enemies. You gain resources to place or upgrade further defenders from kills; upgrades both improve the defenders' raw stats and unlock new abilities for them. Another way to spend resources is to use battlefield abilities that directly damage enemies, inflict some status effects on them or heal or protect your defenders - since, unlike the other options, this does not permanently empower your defenders, and since most such abilities come with long-ish cooldowns, this comes down to a tactical choice when this expenditure is the most useful or, indeed, needed. After the battles, you gain scrap and experience. Scrap can be used to purchase weapon and armor upgrades for your defenders, experience gives them levels, both boosting their stats and granting you skill points, which you can assign to modify their abilities and specialize them individually - for example, do you want this one to do more straight-up damage, or should it rather have a better chance of inflicting status effects that allow your other defenders to inflict more damage unto it. Your ship (the equivalent to the librarian from Defender's Quest 1) also gains experience; as it gains levels, the amount of resources you start each mission with increases, which is obviously huge. Missions come in two difficulties, with the harder one granting much more benefits. Also, for each difficulty you beat a mission on, you gain a star; stars are used to unlock or upgrade battlefield abilities. What truly sets Defender's Quest apart from other games of its genre is that it is comes with a great story that unfolds as you beat the missions. It has a large cast of interesting characters, and their virtues, flaws, worries and desires shape the story, with many character arcs happening in parallel. It also does quite a good job of mixing very serious, sometimes gut-punching moments and narratives with humour. I would describe the overall mood as rather melancholic (in a good way); those are people dealing with quite harrowing and hopeless situations, not always making the right choices, with the horror of the situation ever looming, trying to make the best out of it. The mood is highly enhanced with very fitting and beautiful music. As for the graphics, during the missions, we have yet again very nice looking pixel-art with beautiful surroundings; the effects may sometimes get a little much if a lot of stuff is going on at the same time in a small area, and on a few missions I might have wished for the enemy lanes to stand out a little clearer against the rest of the tiles, but overall, quite good and serviceable. Between the missions, we are shown pixel-art scenes of the characters talking. Now, where in its predecessor I would have unquestioningly called the art in those scenes beautiful, in Defender's Quest 2 it is a bit more of an acquired taste, but I've come around to think that it is actually quite appropriate for the story being told - the strange, surreal, sometimes outright impressionistic-looking colour palette, the characters that, in some expressions, go a little off-model - without going into spoilers, all this fits quite well with the dreamlike, surreal surroundings that the protagonists venture deeper and deeper into. As mentioned, if you wish to hear my thoughts regardings the comparison to Defender's Quest 1, follow the link above.
