DCS: Fw 190 D-9 Dora DLC

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 is widely regarded as Germany's best fighter aircraft of World War II. Its appearance in the skies over France in August 1941 was a rude shock to the Allies, as it was clearly superior to any other plane.

Yes I highly recommend this model, and in my opinion it is definitely the best piston engine plane model in the DCSW(better than p51d) and maybe the most complicated model of Fw190d9. This plane does not merely represent late German fighters, but also extreme German engineering. If you are a fan of German aircraft, the model can be really exciting for ya and might cost you days exploring. But I do have one advice: do not try to dogfight with it, the dogfighting part of the plane can be the most unreal part of the game. Always p51, leaking oil, having holes in his wings, doing loops and turning with you like there happened nothing. Nevertheless, if you only want to experience this gorgous machine, you will find it enjoyable.

Its a dream to fly. I find it very easy to handle. MW 50 is a plus. Awesome in VR. Great for shooting down spitfires

An excellent purchase to your DCS. This DLC is very realist. Overall aerodinamics is excellent. Some features (like some failures) was accurately reproduced. If you like WWII aircrafts, you must have this DLC. It's a great deal to make dogfights with P-51D.

Great module for dcs. It's a challenge to take off and land straight (or at all!) Compared to the p51 due to no rudder trim. Despite that issue this is a good intro aircraft to ww2 fighters as it only has a throttle to deal with no pitch control (this is automatically adjusted automatically just like the real dora). Good training missions and a detailed manual help lower the learning curve.

TL;DR : Years later, and still with lots of bugs. WW2 is not a strong suite for DCS, and it shows in this module. WARNING : There is a serious bug with this aircraft. It causes the engine to cut out if economy power is used. This is not a problem if you fly at combat power the whole time, but if you are trying to conserve fuel or fly "by procedure", it is a serious issue. There are related bugs in the electrical system too, which causes problems with long flights. There are also problems with the weapons systems. Updated review (Feb'2022) : I made my original review on 04-Sep-2018. At the time, the FW 190 D-9 had a number of issues, but I felt that I could overlook them, given the lack of anything else in DCS. Since then, the module has gone backwards, with existing systems no longer work (since Apr'2021). DCS is supposedly a "study simulator", meaning that you could use it to follow, and thus learn, the real procedures of the aircraft in question. That is not the case with the FW 190 D-9. For instance, the electrics do not work correctly. The radio-nav system does not work at all. And the weapons still have bugs. That said, DCS overall is still okay, so don't take this review as dismissing the game overall. It is just that DCS WW2 seems like an afterthought, and it is certainly not where DCS's strengths lie. And, if you are interested in a period, Luftwaffe aircraft, I still recommend the Bf 109 K-4 (note that if you want to fly WW2 missions you will need to but not only a WW2 aircraft module, but also the Normandy Map and the WW2 Assets Pack. In summary : The FW 190 D-9 is one of three currently-available WW2 Luftwaffe aircraft in DCS. Despite it having been out for over 7 years, there remain problems with the engine, electrics and ordnance. It is does fly, sure, but I no longer feel that I can recommend it.

The aircraft itself is fairly well done, but be aware that all the systems are automated, as per the real aircraft, so there isn't much to learn or do. It also doesn't come with anything much in the way of content, so you end up needing to buy the normandy map, WW2 assets and a campaign adding £70 onto an already expensive plane. To get the same sort of content as an IL2 BOx release you need to spend £200+

At first this aircraft was painful to fly for me, because turning is very difficult for a beginner. However, once you have mastered the FW-190 D, you will become a true killer in the sky. Boom and zoom is the most important tactics for this aircraft, but also making tighter turns is very well doable, if you know how to do it (pro-tip: use corner speed and use flaps at low speeds). People who dont like this aircraft simply do not know how to fly it. If you dont have the patience to learn it, then please stay away and fly easier aircraft, before you get upset.

I am impressed with DCS World and all the great aircraft that goes with it. I do have some concern about the DRM but so far I haven't had any problem and haven't heard of any problems from other user's. This flight sim is really fun. It can be made as complicated or as easy as you want it. It really works well with flight pedals, a good joystick, and a trackIR. Enjoy!!! Ya Gotta have this one!!

I read quite a lot of negative reviews about the WW2 warbirds on DCS. The experience you will get from investing in these aircraft, is going to be very subjective. For anyone on the fence, I would like to lay out a few of my own observations. Take them or leave them...after all, we’ve all heard the old adage: opinions are like butt holes, we all have them...right? 1. Don’t invest in a Warbird unless you have full axis controls. To be more specific, a separate stick and throttle and a set of rudder controls for your feet. 2. Don’t invest in a Warbird unless you have a VR headset and a pc powerful enough to push a decent frame rate. 3. Don’t invest in a Warbird unless you have an appreciation of aerodynamics, specifically, the challenges that come with a high performance propellor driven aircraft. 4. Invest in a Warbird if you are prepared to invest in steps 1-3, which can involve a considerable amount of money and time. If you manage to persevere through this trial of time/money, you will experience one of the most rewarding near-flight experiences imaginable. All of the models are lovingly recreated and immensely satisfying...and worth the money- if you can snag them on sale then they are a steal. I am fortunate enough to earn money flying for a living- these aircraft are my zen garden; the only opportunity I would ever get to experience an echo of what that amazing generation did for real, and most never lived to tell the tale.

The fact that taking off and landing require a lot of practise I can live with (even though the over-sensitive ground handling is by all accounts on the DCS Forum too exagerated). The learning curve is steep to be sure, but once you aquire the skill it is very satisying to accomplish. However, the terrible handling of the FW190 in combat is another matter entirely. Unbelievably, a climbing turn at a speed of 300 to 350kph results in a shuddering stall - and this can even happen during a mere 30/40 degree banking turn. Reversing the turn can lead to disastrous consequences as the plane flips into an inverted snap-roll and will almost certainly shudder into a stall which requires the pilot to compensate continously. This makes combat maneuvers, such as a Chandelle, high yo-yo or rolling-scissors virtually impossible unless performed in an extremely sedate manner (as if piloting a trainer instead of a fighter) which leaves you at the mercy of your opponent. Granted the 190 is an energy fighter, but it is also considered one of the most agile aircraft of WWII. I fail to understand why when veteran 190 pilot Erich Brunotte, after having tried this simulation, complained to the devs about the shuddering stalls (see video 'Revisiting Dora 9 Part 1' on Youtube) the devs still did not fix the problem. What more proof do you need than the word of a veteran WWII 190 pilot that the flight model is not accurate? Instead they did nothing to fix this glaring deficiency. In the video Brunotte clearly states that the shudering stall is a problem and he also mentions that the 190 could out-turn any other fighter of the era. Well, not on this flight-sim. The faulty handling makes aerial dogfighting an extremely frustrating experience, which is why I cannot reccomend this product. Only buy this very expensive aircraft if you are willing to put up with the frustration of severely restricted combat maneuvers. A shame, because the aircraft itself is beautifully rendered. Perhaps one day the devs will take notice of the WWII veteran and and get around to fixing the flight model.
