Mouthwashing presents itself as a psychological horror experience, but in reality, it lacks any clear direction. Rather than building tension or exploring deeper themes, it throws together a series of disturbing and disjointed moments without purpose or cohesion. There’s no real psychological depth—just imagery that seems designed to unsettle without any meaningful context. The narrative fails to engage, as most of its so-called twists are obvious from the start. By the time the ending arrives, there’s nothing left to uncover; everything has already been telegraphed well in advance. Instead of a carefully constructed story, it feels like a sequence of loosely connected events that never come together in a satisfying way. This lack of cohesion extends to the gameplay. The game constantly introduces new mechanics—whether in the form of puzzles, brief interactions, or sudden chase sequences—only to discard them almost immediately. No mechanic is explored or developed beyond a single instance or two, making the experience feel like a collection of unrelated ideas rather than a thoughtfully designed game. The late-game chase sequences are a perfect example: while one could argue they add variety, they feel completely out of place in a game that had no action elements up until that point. There’s no buildup, no integration into the game’s prior mechanics—just sudden, brief segments that lack any real challenge or purpose. Even the soundtrack, while competent, misses an opportunity to elevate the game. The main theme could have had more presence and variation, but like the rest of the experience, it feels underdeveloped. Ultimately, Mouthwashing struggles to be anything at all. It isn’t psychological horror, it isn’t abstract, and it doesn’t commit to any particular idea. What remains is a collection of random elements strung together without purpose, leaving little to take away from the experience.

I like the visual styles, but nothing else really stood out to me. I didn't find any of the characters particularly compelling or interesting either, and most were somewhat annoying. I also encountered a few bugs that made me have to restart some levels (like menus not opening), which were pretty irritating in such a short game. I tried to read a few reviews and let the game sit with me to see if any of my thoughts changed, but it's been a while and I still feel the same. It was worth a try at least, but it's not a game for me. If you're still interested I'd recommend waiting a bit until it's half off or something on a sale.

After seeing all the positive reviews prior to buying the game, I now find myself in the minority of people after having completed the game. It wasn’t a terrible experience by any means, but I don’t find it very memorable either. First off, I don’t think this should be marketed as being any sort of horror game; more like a linear storytelling adventure game. I consider myself a wimp when it comes to horror games, and at no point did I ever find myself scared or on the edge of my seat during the 4 hours it took me to complete the game (would have been quicker if I wasn’t looking for hidden items). I would say it’s somewhere between weird and mildly unsettling at most. The graphic style doesn’t really do it any favours in this regard either, since they’re a little too basic for anything to be intense visually. A lot of the time I just found myself running back and forth down the same corridors to grab an item or talk to someone before going back to where I started. Once I got back to where I needed to be the game would do its “fake” freeze/crash before jumping to another moment in time. It got to be repetitive after a while. The story itself was just average, and after a couple of hours of playing I was getting bored with it. Because the game is rated “Overwhelmingly Positive” on steam I thought for sure there must be a big twist coming at the end that’s just going to blow me away, so I kept at it. Eventually I got to the point where the credits started rolling and I just sat there thinking “Really? That’s it? This is what everyone is raving about?!”. Ngl, as a dad with young kids I don’t get much time to game and I felt like I wasted my time on this one unfortunately. I personally would rate this game no higher than a 4/10. I picked it up on the latest sale and even then, I wouldn’t recommend it. Watching a “let’s play” video on YouTube is probably the way to go; you won’t be missing out on anything.

It's widely known and acknowledged that this game is really, really good. Also that it's really, really messed up. It's Psychological horror at its finest. So instead of repeating all that, let me focus on something I feel isn't mentioned enough: The pacing of this game is phenomenal. I started it blind, only knowing what everybody knows (see above), and while I really liked it, my first impression was "this isn't so bad, what are all those folks on about?". I did see what folks were on about at the end, but the way this game gradually, imperceptably at first, ramps up its fuckedupness (It's a word. Like Mouthfeel. Sac Water. Downstairs Longnose.) is masterful. There's no "turning point". It just gets worse, minute after minute. Until you sit there, watching the credits roll, a mind full of questions and disgust. Yep, Mouthwashing really is as good as everyone says.

Alright, no major spoilers, but Mouthwashing is a psychological horror game that delivers a chilling, non-linear story about a cargo ship crew stranded in space—and how that isolation completely shatters their minds. The art style is fantastic, the use of music and sound is super effective, and overall, it’s an easy recommendation if you’re into short yet deeply unsettling horror experiences. This is now my favorite saddest and horror game. It’s so depressing in ways that can’t even be described. 8/10.

Well, this is a great way to tell a really messed up story. Great visuals and sound design too. Well done. Also had some chuckles from a few achievements I wasn't expecting.

❖ I appreciate the game's horror element reaching my expectation. ❖ I feel myself being part of the pony express (thanks to the immersion). ❖ Everyone in the crew possesses unique characteristic traits (both good and bad). ❖ The soundtracks fit so well within the hopeless atmosphere. ❖ Would recommend anyone to give this game a try. ❖ Just be ready to not be sad or depressed for a day or two after beating this game.

It took me a while to make this analysis, because it seems to be much easier to criticize bad games than to talk about them. This game is a work of art, like those movies you want to erase from your memory so you can watch them over and over again. You can see the care that went into every detail. Everything fits together very well and in harmony, there are no missing pieces and no meaningless bits. Spoilers: I read it on Reddit and it seems that many don't believe or don't want to believe that Jimmy abused Anya. I think the game could have made this clearer, after all we live in a time where this is more problematic and exposed. I also think that it's part of each player's personality, and it pains me to think that someone would suffer such abuse and not freak out, not react 24/7 against their abuser, and still treat them normally. That's not the attitude I would take, and I think a lot of people think like me. This raises more doubts. Now that we know Jimmy is an abuser, there's a natural denial. The truth is that we don't want that to happen to Anya. This reaction is intensified by the fact that while we're debating and theorizing about it, the game is already over, Anya is already dead, and Jimmy didn't face justice, in fact it was a tragic end for everyone. There's nothing we can do, the story's already written, and the truth is: we don't want to live in a world where someone cruel can do something bad to a good person and get away with it. So we deny it. But that's the world we live in: bad people get away with their crimes all the time, there are many victims without justice, and many stories without heroes. The fact that we subconsciously don't want to believe in these atrocities is proof that we want to be good and kind and just. Hope for humanity.
