Hello fans of "The Backrooms", this is Dreamcore. Dreamcore is a different experience from most backrooms games. While a good handful of backrooms games rely on quantity of levels, this game relies on quality to an impressive degree. This game dives into Ambiance and a sense of despair over overt horror tactics. (Although, in my opinion, we could do with one or two well-placed entities to amp up suspense. Specifically, towards the end of the first area of "Eternal Suburbia" or even in some areas of "The Playrooms") This game uses large and overwhelming spaces to make you feel not only trapped; but hopelessly, hopelessly...... lost. I know this may be an issue of skill, but TPRs took me about 9 hours to complete. That being said, this game is phenomenal. A true test of one's spatial awareness and patience. After hours of going in and out of the same room you SWEAR you have seen over and over again; you are relieved when you hear the soft whirring of a generator; or better yet, that familiar call of an elevator bell chiming the end of your adventure. I would recommend this game to those with time on their hands and a thirst for quality atmosphere.

Hands down the BEST level design I have seen in a liminal space game. The new update with Playrooms has honestly blown my mind. Would 100% recommend this game if exploring full sized liminal spaces is your thing, you can spend literal hours in there.

Very faithful to the feelings that liminal spaces are intended to evoke-- no cheap jump scares, no entities, just pure atmosphere and nostalgia.

The poolrooms level is top tier... but the two levels called Eternal Suburbia and Playrooms are labyrinthian dog crap tier "where the hell do i go" kind of games. If it's on sale pick it up for the poolrooms level. But the latter two levels are awful and should be avoided. There's much better backrooms-style games out there.

The overall graphics are pretty basic and lack luster but it makes sense for the intention. Mechanics are basic, nothing too complex other than a walking sim + the interact "e" button. Map size is insane, if you looking for practically infinite backrooms or somewhat procedurally generated then this is for you. You'll spend hours exploring everything on the first floor of DreamPools and then another few hours in the basement. Add a few more hours for every other level, sublevel, and biome that exist within this game. VR is pretty compatible, it runs smoothly, keybinds work, graphic fidelity is okay at short distances however you will notice small artifacts at longer distances. Performance is very good, easy to run so no issues should arise, other than the relatively uncommon spike caused by UE loading asset/umap that can occur with exploration.

Best experienced if you know nothing about it, but even then the charm of the game won't last much further than the first level.
A lot of my enjoyment came from my lack of knowledge. Once you complete the first level, you've essentially seen everything the game has to offer. You are alone in a dream and while the novelty of that combined with the players lack of knowledge makes it a gripping experience for a while, it loses it's footing once you understand that's all there is to it. There's a lack of stimuli that will instil a sense of fear and unease into the player, you become too relaxed and careless by the time you get to the 2nd level. The atmosphere is thick and the visuals are great but it lacks something that will heighten your senses, something to keep you alert in order to keep you immersed like you are in the beginning. I loved the Dreampools level, I just wish I had a reason to keep playing. Eternal Suburbia was a much weaker experience.
This is probably my first time posting an in depth review of a game. Although I've enjoyed this game greatly as a huge fan of liminal spaces and psychological horror and even puzzle and escape games (even though its not tagged as those last two because its not a heavy influence in the game play, you still have to figure out what your're doing. I broke up my review into a few sections, one for each level I played at point of this review, and a final spot to recap thoughts on the game as a whole. First reviewing Dreampools level I'm a big fan of how the game has no direction other than telling you loading tips along the lines of following your curiosity and paying attention to detail which I interpreted as a red herring after completing the level because looking back at Dreampools level it felt like following my curiosities was genuinely just wandering aimlessly, BUT, that feeling is what added to it feeling like a genuine liminal space game in addition to the lack of instruction (which is a good thing and what I really liked), large map giving plenty of places to explore and get lost in, the quality of the camera with film grain giving the already vast map an additional eerie feeling, and all the audio (especially of the footsteps echoing through empty corridors). Second, my thoughts after playing through Eternal Suburbia This is where the loading tip of paying attention to detail started to make more sense, for this level there was more of a feeling of where to go, and how to go about it, without putting much thought towards it. Also this level seemed to be broken up into a few sections that once entering a new section you cant accidentally wander backwards. which definitely fit for the themes presented in the Eternal Suburbia level. Third, my thoughts after playing the playtest of the Playrooms level The Playrooms seemed to have even more immediate direction on whats happening compared to the other levels which my personal opinion is that I didn't like how it took very little thought and time to know exactly what I had to do. Although overall A lot of people would probably find this likable about that level. I did enjoy how you could wander back and forth between sections within this level and the freedom of wandering back and forth as much as you like. Lastly, my thoughts on the game as a whole Even though the game seemed to get easier with each level that has come out so far, I do like the game exactly how it is and wouldn't wish the levels were any different than they are. Dreamcore perfectly captures liminal spaces and that feeling of wandering around with an eerie ambiance and a feeling of being lost and almost hopeless a bit wondering if you're going anywhere in beautiful and well made environments. I do enjoy how it captures the immersed feeling of being in and wandering around in the spaces presented in a way that's true to liminal spaces. I can't emphasize enough that, unlike other games, Dreamcore (especially Dreampools level) is a unique and perfect example of a game that captures psychological horror in a true liminal space without having to incorporate monsters, jump scares, etc. like most other games that take place in liminal space environments. My hope for future levels of the game is for them to bring back that the feeling of hopelessness or being lost and wandering around without any direction at all. BUT again I do like the current levels exactly as they are and wouldn't have wished them to be any different and I'd consider this game to be in one of my top 10 games ever played.

I don't know why but being alone, lost, going in circles and feeling frustrated was somehow a compelling thing in this game. I hated it at times but I loved it for what it was doing. The game play is all about how to get orientated and solve the geometric maze puzzles, but the strangeness, cold beauty and emptiness of the levels compel you think about the situation you're in and how it would feel.
