Honestly this feels like a downgrade from the original. Sure the graphics are cleaner and the map has water instead of cartography, but having to upgrade each fan after each improvement is researched is tedious and not a fun mechanic. Also, why change from humans to animals? it had a nice vibe before, now it just feels they are trying to attract the cozy crowd by the change.
You have a cannon that has a full gimbal set up and you make it so it can't shoot pointing down? the aiming system for the cannons is absolutely awful.
EDIT:
30 hours in now: I'm skipping the useless comedy dialogue. they made the game easier by erasing how they comfort works, and now putting workshops next to housing doesn't even make them upset. there isn't even a need for a moral system anymore they pretty much gutted it.
you can't just rearrange your ship whenever you have to go to skydocks now which is annoying.
Ran into bugs where you load back into your game and it says there are pirates incoming but nothing is there. and you can't even dock into a city because you are "under attack" this save is pretty much unplayable now. very disappointing,
This is staying negative, they had a good thing with the first game, but I think they ruined it by trying to steer too much into the cutesy bird stuff and its just a downgrade
EDIT#2 in response to the dev: The reason I say it will remain negative is because I understand the gameplay can and most likely will change, but the story and the direction you decided to take with making it an animal based world is most likely something you are not willing to change. and thats a shame because it looks like I am not the only one that enjoyed the way the first games story was told.
I will say this, if by the rare chance the story does get changed to be more like 1, then the review can change too.

Fun little game. Quite satisfying. Had a few crashes, but autosave mitigated most of the headache.

Nice little game! Very chill, for the price it's definitely worth it if you're into the resource management/colony building genre. Definitely recommend.

Speaking as someone who played Airborne Kingdom and now Airborne Empire - I freaking LOVE this game! The setting, the narrative, the characters, the music, the art - it's such a total mood. Calm music, a city floating above various lands helping folks out AND blasting pirates out of the air - what's not to like! It's like being a benevolent sky god with anger management issues.
The highlights:
- Your floating city has more personality than most people I know
- Combat that doesn't make you want to throw your mouse out the window
- Music so chill it could put a caffeinated squirrel to sleep
- Art style that's prettier than a sunset made of cotton candy
A note on the weapons; they feel like such a natural extension of the narrative and also what the Airborne Kingdom experience was like - all without getting in the way of needing micromanaging. The devs somehow managed to make combat feel as smooth as butter on a hot pancake, which is honestly impressive considering most city builders make warfare feel like trying to perform surgery with oven mitts.
The developers clearly poured their hearts (and probably several gallons of coffee) into this masterpiece. They took everything great about Airborne Kingdom and somehow made it even better without breaking what already worked. That's like successfully adding rocket boosters to a bicycle - it shouldn't work, but here we are, soaring through the clouds having the time of our lives.
Bottom Line:
If you enjoyed the first game, this is a no-brainer. If you didn't play the first game, go fix that immediately. These devs deserve all the support for creating something this genuinely delightful.
10/10 would recommend to anyone who enjoys floating cities, helping people, and occasionally reminding pirates why the sky belongs to you.

The game is missing a lot of the charm that Airborne Kingdom had. The gorgeous Arabic Steampunk theme from Kingdom is either gone or so watered-down I couldn't see it. The beautiful map made of ceramic tiles and paper is gone. The 1001 Nights-style fairytale narrative is gone. It seems like everything interesting except the core gimmick (it moves! it flies!) has been stripped out in favour of something much more generic. The cutesy bird characters will not save you, Airborne Empire.
