The Mildew Children is a visual novel about a witch in small Russian medieval village that strictly adheres to their Pagan beliefs and traditions. A particular ceremony needs to be performed and the events leading up to it are tumultuous.
From beginning to end I was sucked into this fascinating world. The characters were well developed and the voice acting (completely in Russian) was emotive and well-performed. The art was simple yet beautiful throughout. And the music, sparse but highly effective. The overall vibe is what kept me so hooked. There was always this slight oddness that kept my curiosity piqued.
Unique story with a satisfying conclusion!
I liked the small minigames which helped build tension and walking around the village added good atmosphere. Dialog choices keep conversations engaging. Though if your memory isn't that great and you are aiming for the good ending, maybe keep a guide handy.
Unfortunately it's not a perfect experience even if impressive for such a small team. There are grammar mistakes. They are kind of pretty noticeable in an experience where main draw is reading. And while I think the odd vocabulary/idiom choices (probably translated a bit too literally) worked out for the overall vibe and tone of the game, it was a bit confusing to understand the meaning a few times. I think a bit of the culture got lost in the translation. But don't let that stop you from playing.
So yeah, big recommend for vn fans. It's always welcome to explore different cultures in this genre!

What a trip.
Playing it I had many thoughts on what I love about it, but also on what I would like to see made differently. I have strong feelings about the game’s pacing, the overuse (IMO) of various emotions and tension-adding systems, or the rather static, continuous vibe spanning over the final third of the game.
And, like many folks, I’m not a fan of the fact that the game’s rules regarding the story branching are very vague. I’d appreciate it if I was told outright that there are side quests in the game, and that it’s worth pursuing them. (I tried finding them on the whim in Chapter 1, found none, and in result assumed that there’s no such feature.)
But at the same time, the fact I actually had such strong feelings and the need to seek and analyze the themes, emotions, story structure, and game systems is a great compliment. I was enchanted by the dialogues, the voice acting, the visuals, the atmosphere, or the very unusual lore-heavy metaphors the characters use as they describe mundane events from their own cultural framework.
Also, while the game features almost exclusively children, it never gets Weird, in The Regular visual-novely style, if you catch my drift. A huge relief.
Damn, such an ambitious game. And I think every person would agree that it’s a flawed one - but we wouldn’t agree why exactly. Because it’s a work of art, and it’s challenging.
I didn’t love my time playing it, but I’ll love my memories of it.

This is a quite decent game that combines folklore and horror!
I highly enjoyed the visuals, music and captivating atmosphere, also the setting and world-building are very well done. The story is overall pretty intriguing too, though sometimes it felt a bit underwhelming due to some lack of mystery and build-up (the plot is rather straightforward). I was still very interested in learning about the lore and generally enjoyed the game's whole vibe, it has a pretty unique feel to it. The minigames and timed events often tend to be challenging but in my opinion they greatly contribute to the atmosphere and made me feel like I also experience the character's anxiety lol.
However admittedly, I think that the game could profit from including even more horror elements, I definitely enjoyed the horror a lot and would've loved to have more of it (the last chapters do a great job at it though!).
In conclusion, I believe that some aspects of the story could get improved in order to become more impactful, considering the excellent potential offered by the concept, but I'm still quite content with the current state of the game!

If you like Paganism, the Occult, and immersive, well-thought out world-building and you enjoy a good read, this game is a no-brainer. The art and atmosphere is beautiful and the writing is stellar. The setting alone explores a very interesting premise, and shows the lengths to which a village may follow superstition into tragedy. Every character is written with a unique voice, there are some instances of lovely humour and just so so much detail put into the lore and belief system present in the village. Til the very end there remains doubt whether the supernatural powers you become familiar with during the playthrough are real or mere superstition.
There are mini-games accompanying dialogue that present a nice level of challenge whilst conveying the pain and struggle of the characters. The map-based puzzles are also enjoyable, and nothing takes all that long to accomplish so that you'll generally have an easy time progressing through the visual novel.
My few gripes with the game are that:
- The English translation is a little awkward, but perfectly readable. Might throw you off at first, but the essence of the writing shines through and is well worth reading to the end.
- The game doesn't really communicate what decisions you ought to take in any given situation to achieve a good outcome, which would be fine, only the lore is rather obscure when you get started and the characters have a lot of knowledge you don't, so it feels like you are aimlessly traipsying around in the dark a lot. Whether you get a good ending or not relies on you making cumulative good choices throughout your playthrough, so when answers feel very obscure and arbitrary it's very easy to lock yourself out of a bad ending. That being said, the ending is not that significant to the story.
- overall the ending didn't leave me too satisfied. It felt like there were a lot of narrative threads that could have been tied up a little better, or themes that could have come to more fruition, because there are so many beautiful things going on in the story.
This project was developed by a very small team and deserves support. It's an incredible ambitious and beautifully written project that explores paganism in a way I've never seen before.
