After a few hours of gameplay, I can confidently say that Sunderfolk is a true success in the world of cooperative tactical games. It offers a warm and innovative experience, especially thanks to its smartphone-based control system, which makes it easy to pick up and enhances player interaction. Its inviting and engaging universe, brought to life by charming visuals and quality voice acting, immediately draws players in. The gameplay, combining strategy, deck-building, and shared progression, is surprisingly rich! While the solo mode is more conventional, it allows the game’s real strength to shine: the joy of playing together, thinking as a team, and sharing a unique and memorable adventure!

Very fun game, I highly recommend playing this even as a couple, just a fun turn based strategy game. I don't really understand why the hate with the phone control, it works fine and it's actually very convenient to see your own stats and items, manage your character while other people do the same, no need to swap places to you the mouse if you want all to play on the same screen. I'm only 4 hours in but i'm having a lot of fun, glad I got the game! Naming things funny names makes the game even more fun :)

I'm not going to go into any details about story or game play. There is enough info out there on it. I'm just going to talk about where I see the most disconnect on if someone should be interested in this or not. Game is overall great although I wish more than 4 could play. Someone please make this mod. Who cares about balance just make it! Games like this are more about getting people together in the same room than a well balanced game IMHO. However they chose balance over fun. If you are a traditional board gamer(Gloom Haven, LotR Journey to Middle Earth, etc...) looking for a board game in the form of a video game, this is hands down the best thing I've played that tries to ride that line. This game is for you and you will have fun playing this as a board game with your group. Using your phones to control everything is a far better more authentic board game experience. I've played the campaign|(About 25 hours) with my wife(Likes but doesn't love role playing board games) and 2 kids(10 and 13) and we loved it. I have another campaign going with my wife and a another couple who we very casually play games like this with and we all loved it. This removes a lot of barriers to entry you get for games like this with traditional board games. Set up and take down time is 0, remembering rules when you haven't played in forever no longer exists, remembering what all the different players and enemies do is super easy now. Its great. Its a video game that plays like a traditional board game, but with some fun flair that only a video game can do. The price is very fair for a board game, I got it on sale for 40 and have definitely got my money out of it and will continue to play it more. I will absolutely be buying more content for this if they ever release DLC. If you are a video gamer looking for a video game experience that plays out like a video game this might not be for you. You must use your phone to play which is lame if you are treating this like a video game, especially if you are playing single player. You can play this single player, but single player board games have never been my thing because I would rather play a normal video game. If you ever have a game night and want something you can play with a bunch of casuals this is a great thing to get them playing together with minimal setup and very little to learn. Friends can jump and out between missions and you don't have to have the whole group to keep playing as 1 person can play 2 or more characters if needed. Games like this are really make or break depending on your group. I've seen a lot of people complain about the price. I tend to value things by dollars per hour when it comes to video games and I get almost all my games on sale unless I really want to support a developer I like. For games I'm super cheap and I want to be able to get 1 dollar per hour. Like I said I'm cheap. So far on this game it has been played by 4 people for 10 hours and 3 people for 25 hours. I got it on sale for 40, and collectively this game has given us 115 hours of entertainment. Everyone values things differently but for me that's how I evaluate the true value of something like this. If I was playing this solo I would not spend more than 25 on it. For me though again I would never play this game or any game like this solo. That's just me though. I'm sure like everything on Steam this will be discounted to 50% off. So if you want to spend less just wait.

I was looking for a game that can bring me, my wife and my daughter (8) together. On easy difficulty, it's just perfect! We are all having a blast. My daughter was quickly able to get the gameplay of her character (fire mage salamander thingy) Each character unique gameplay is nice and well balanced. Control through the phone/tablet is intuitive enough and the game feels really polished. The story is a bit on the simple side but it makes it ok for younger players. Perfect couch co-op / digital board game .

+ Jackbox controls (use a phone to play) + Only one person needs to own the game + Fun turn-based strategy where coordination matters + Easy-to-learn controls and mechanics + Replayability ~ The story is just alright - Some scenes make the character textures look blurry Solid 8/10, I look forward to seeing what else this developer will create!

When considering this game, I highly recommend thinking about the price from a board game prospective instead of from a video game prospective. You will get a lot of replay out of this game if you have friends!

I played Gloomhaven the board game for a long time (over 2 years). I wanted to find something similar (but easier for children) so I could play it with my eight year old son. A friend of mine recommended Sunderfolk and we've been playing it for a few days now (we being me, my wife, and my son). It is an amazingly well done game. It is clearly tailored towards a younger audience, but it has a very smart strategy/deck-building element like Gloomhaven built it. It honestly may be one of the best computer games I have played in my 30+ years of gaming. I really hope that more DLC comes out soon. This game is a blast for all of us.

Sunderfolk: The Accidental Hero of Game Night This little gem started as a backup plan, a filler for when our D&D group was running on empty story-wise. But somehow, that "temporary" fill-in became the main event every week until we fully completed it like responsible adventurers with too much caffeine and not enough sleep. Now, I'll admit I’d much rather be playing this with a controller in my hand, but surprisingly, it works just fine on a phone. Touch controls didn’t ruin the fun, though my thumbs occasionally considered unionizing. Gameplay? Genuinely engaging. Each character felt unique, like they all showed up with their own weird backstories and snack preferences. No two felt the same, which is rare in a game that isn't trying to be 500 hours long. The story was... there. Solid, well-told, but definitely aimed at a younger audience. Our group, comprised entirely of folks who remember floppy disks and dial-up internet, found it a bit too Saturday morning cartoon meets “moral-of-the-week.” Still, it was charming in its own right, just a little too clean-cut for our taste. That said, we want more. Like, right now. Secret Door and Dreamhaven, if you’re reading this, go darker, go deeper, give us trauma and weird philosophical choices. Or at the very least, give us more NPCs that insult us creatively. Bottom line: If you keep making these, I’ll keep buying them. And hey, anything that keeps me from having to DM is already GOTY in my book.
