The balance isn't perfect (especially with the 2 unlocked character classes lacking a bit of polish), but it's enough to make for an interesting puzzle rpg for a handful of playthroughs or more.
It's interesting how much the player's build is permanently altered DURING battles. So you're rewarded by prolonging fights, to a degree, but with some risk and at the cost of just a few turns. It also leads to fun moments and decisions about adding new symbols able to make or break a run.
